#1.0. DjeMBeY is not a developer that I have come across before owning the S4 but if I had to compare him to anyone, it would be to salesale of NEAT ROM fame who will be well known to S2 and S3 owners.

His ROM's are all stock Samsung for the i9505 and come either Odexed or DeOdexed. They all have the stock firmware look which, personally, I prefer.

They also have the advantage that they come pre-rooted and so therefore, flashing the ROM also roots your phone. He also has a prodigious output and usually produces his ROM's within a day or two of their official release.

His ROM's fall into 2 main categories, Stock and Modified and can be found in his posts, #1 and #2, here...

#1.1. "Pre-Rooted STOCK FW - Odex - KNOX 0x1" (for installation see #2.0 in post #2 below)

- FULLY ROOTED
- Odexed
- No need for Insecure Kernels.
- Complete, Odin flashable Packages.
- Can be used on Non-Rooted devices.
- Binary Flash Counter will NOT increase
- System status will stay NORMAL/OFFICIAL.
- Only 1 file and you have a complete firmware including Root permission.
- Fully working KIES & OTA updates (FYI: root will be lost after software update)

#1.2. "Pre-Rooted Modified FW - DeOdex - KNOX 0x1" (for installation see #2.0 in post #2 below)

- Pre-Rooted
- Unbranded
- DeOdexed
- DeBloated
- Zipaligned
- Super-SLIM (1.1GB)
- Device Status - OFFICIAL
- Fully working OTA and KIES updates
- Patched NfcNci.apk - working NFC Payment / NFC Tags
- Patched SecEmail.apk + SecExchangeServices.apk - working HOTMAIL and all other Accounts
- No other modifications

#1.3. "GT-I9505 Modified & Stock ROMs - CWM/TWRP/PhilZ flashable ZIP:" (for installation see #2.10 in post #2 below)

- Pre-Rooted
- Unbranded
- Odexed/DeOdexed
- DeBloated
- Zipaligned
- SuperSlim (1.1 GB)
- Fully working KIES updates (with STOCK RECOVERY!!)
- Patched NfcNci.apk - working NFC Payment / NFC Tags
- Patched SecEmail.apk + SecExchangeServices.apk - working HOTMAIL and all other Accounts

#1.4. Both the Pre-Rooted STOCK FW - Odex - KNOX 0x1 and Pre-Rooted Modified FW - DeOdex - KNOX 0x1 need to be flashed via Odin.

#1.5. The GT-I9505 Modified & Stock ROMs - CWM/TWRP/PhilZ flashable ZIP: is for those who already have a custom recovery installed on their devices and are CWM/TWRP flashable .zip packages on the phone.
(N.B. You will still need to flash the modem for your ROM through Odin after downloading it from here.)

#1.6. Below is just a brief sample of some of the app's removed in the Modified ROM's. These may vary from ROM to ROM. Currently, the MH1 Modified ROM has 61 app's, (416MB), removed. Please check the Removed apps packages for individual ROM's.

AllSharePlay15.apk
Blurb.apk
ChatON_feature.apk
ChatONV_J.apk
CHS_J_Device_only.apk
Chrome.apk
Dropbox.apk
Earth.apk
Episodes.apk
Flipboard.apk
InteractiveTutorial.apk
Magazines.apk
Match3VS.apk
MusicLiveShare.apk
PickUpTutorial.apk
SamsungBooks.apk
SamsungLearning.apk
SamsungGames.apk
SamsungHub.apk
SHealth2.apk
StoryAlbumWidget.apk
TravelService.apk

YahoostockPhone2013.apk

A nice touch is that if you opt for a Modified ROMs and find that you need one or two of the, almost, 60+ removed stock app's, DjeMBeY has these available as an add-on's package so that you can create your own ROM. Personally, I did not need any of the removed apps. It also means that these Modified ROMs come in at around 1GB smaller than the bloated stock ROM's. Download time is also a lot quicker on DjeMBeY's site, around 5-10 min's, rather than the 90-120 min's on the free SamMobile site.

#1.7. For modems, (radios), for the ROMs in #1.3...

This is a step-by-step guide, with videos and screenshots, for absolute beginners to Android and the Galaxy S4. Please read this post carefully and thoroughly as they will take you through the flashing, rooting and recovery installation procedure and answer most of your queries.

This guide is for the Samsung Galaxy S4, GT-i9505 quad core phone only and no other variant!

If you are unsure of the model of your phone, go to... Settings > More > About device > Model number

(If you use this guide on any other model of phone do not come crying to me... you have been warned!)

(WARNING On firmwares that are Knox security enabled, the following instructions will result in the Knox security flag being increased. See, Knox Security & locked bootloader on new firmwares for more details.)

#2.0. Flashing & rooting using Odin and either the DjeMBeY, "Pre-Rooted STOCK FW - Odex - KNOX 0x1", or, "Pre-Rooted Modified FW - DeOdex - KNOX 0x1", ROM's

#2.1. What hardware do I need?

Galaxy S4, GT-i9505 quad core phone

USB lead that came with the phone.

A Windows PC running, XP, Vista or Windows 7 or 8

#2.2. What software do I need?

7-Zip (or similar... WinRAR or WinZip) to extract the .zip files on your PC. Download, here.

Odin3 v3.09. This is the PC programme that will install the rooted kernel to your phone. Unzip the file and run Odin3 v3.09. Download, here.

Samsung Kies. This is a PC Suite for the Samsung. Download and install to your PC as you will require the drivers that come bundled with it, to connect your phone to the PC and Odin3.

Download for Windows, here.

When you have downloaded and installed Kies, connect your phone via the USB lead to ensure that it is working. If you encounter any problems connecting your phone to Kies, see this trouble shooting guide, here.

#2.3.The pre-rooted DjeMBeY ROM

Both the Stock ROM, #1.1, or the Modified Stock ROM, #1.2, need to be flashed to your phone using Odin. They are suitable for either rooted or unrooted phones as they will root your phone automatically. Both of these ROM's are, "No wipe", and your data should be safe but, as with any flashing procedure, it is recommended that you backup all your data first.

Download your choice of DjeMBeY ROM, here.

Download the .zip file to your desktop and unzip it. To extract the file, just right click on it and select 7-Zip/WinRAR/Winzip and, "Extract here". This extracted .tar file is the one you will need. This is the .tar file that contains the DjeMBeY ROM that will root your phone. To avoid confusion you can now delete the original .zip file that it came with.

#2.4. ROM flashing procedure

You should by now have installed Samsung Kies and Odin3 on your PC and be able to connect via your USB lead. Also, you have the correct DjeMBeY ROM .tar file on your home screen.

Important: If you are rooting for the first time you should make a note of your phone's, "Version" in case you ever need to revert back to stock firmware. To do this, open the dial pad and type in the following:- *#1234#

This will give you 3 lines of information about your phones firmware and CSC code, etc: You should make a careful note of all this information and keep it somewhere safe in case you ever need to un-root by flashing your stock firmware and kernel.

#2.5. Step 1.

Ensure that your phone is fully charged.

On your phone, go to... Settings > More > About device > Build number and tap 7 times on it. This will enable the hidden,

Tips for using this Dummies Guide.

I have tried to keep this, "Dummies Guide", as simple and easy to understand as possible for absolute beginners, with no prior knowledge of Android and the Samsung Galaxy S4, whilst trying to cover the most commonly asked questions about rooting.

#3.1. Please take the time to read posts #1, and #2 carefully and thoroughly before posting a question as they should contain most of the answers you require.

#3.2. If a reply to a question states, "See, #1.7". It means that the answer to your query is already contained in post #1, item #7. Re-read that item again, carefully, and it should answer your question and saves the time and trouble of having to repeat things all over again.

#3.3. When posting a question you must include your phone, "Version", details as shown in #2.4 as well as the DjeMBeY ROM you are flashing.

#3.4. Please, please, please, help keep this thread on topic. It is designated for the actual flashing of DjeMBeY ROM's to your phone and not for general questions about custom kernels, other custom ROMs, Kies connection problems, apps, nandroid backups and restores, etc: There are other threads on the forum for that or you can start one of your own.

#3.5. Please do not PM me with questions. I will not reply. Ask them on the forum so that others may benefit from the questions and answers or post a question on the DjeMBeY ROM's forum, here.

#3.6. WARNING

Rooting your phone could, in theory, void your warranty in certain cases. Also, you will no longer be able to update your phone via Kies or OTA, (Over The Air), in some cases and will need to flash ROM's via Odin or CWM Recovery... which is probably why you rooted anyway!

Whilst I have taken every care in compiling this guide, I cannot be held responsible for any damage that may occur through its use, or mis-use, and the decision to use this guide lies with you, the owner.

This guide is written solely for, and on behalf of, Android Forums and may not be reproduced, in part or whole, without permission.

THANKS

My thanks go to the following for their help and contributions to this guide:-

DjeMBeY for his kernel and instructions. Feel free to make a donation to him.

Phil3759 for his recovery and instructions. Feel free to make a donation to him.

To our very own Hawker, for his Kies troubleshooting guide.

To Nokia7Vista, olis4 and FastGSMServer for their videos.

To all the Android Forum posters whose posts I have plundered in an attempt to organise a definitive guide.

hi ironass me old chum, nice info!!

it the latest the MF5 version or the MF8??

Hello and welcome to Android Forums, S4, ATR Sydney99! :hello:

Right... that's my being nice to you done with Syd! :aetsch:

Now... if you follow your usual format, you'll bring the KoD, (Kiss of Death), to anything you flash from now on. :vamp:

Up until I started writing post #1, MF5 was the latest. However, as I mentioned, this dev's output is prodigious and MF8 is now the latest and I am about to flash it myself. So wait before giving it the Syd KoD!

For your info, all the latest stock ROM's have extra enhancements over the original releases, re: Atma's post, here...

Samsung implements apps to SD feature in latest Galaxy S4 update

Looks like its going to Germany first.

Other fixes:

  • New Camera firmware with HDR video
  • Smearing issue has been fixed (Purple effect while scrolling)
  • Smart Pause Toggle
  • Move Apps to SD Card
  • Semi-transparent status bar
  • New Icons in Settings
  • Secure boot status in

UPDATE The Syd KoD has started already. :vamp:

Just flashed the SuperSlim, DeOdexed, MF8, ROM and I appear to be having a problem with my custom ringtones, notifications and alarms being recognised. Have reflashed the ROM using Odin but still the same problem. Strange, it didn't happen to me on all the other ROM's. Will give the dev a shout.

EDIT Have reverted back to the MF5 nandroid that I made prior to flashing MF8. Will re-download MF8 and re-try later.

UPDATED, UPDATE Panic over! It must have been a dodgy download for me. Re-downloaded the Stock, modified, MF8 ROM and flashed with Odin and then flashed the CF-Auto-Root and then PhilZ Recovery, (you have to flash CF-Auto_Root if you want the PhilZ custom recovery, otherwise, no need). Everything appears hunky dory now! :)

why do you have to flash chainfire file after this rom, before philz recovery

if this rom auto roots, cant you just flash philz on top??

Re-downloaded the Stock, modified, MF8 ROM and flashed with Odin and then flashed the CF-Auto-Root and then PhilZ Recovery, (you have to flash CF-Auto_Root if you want the PhilZ custom recovery, otherwise, no need).

Errm, Thanks but already been using these for a while now.

... and your point is:questionmark:

Flashing chainfire autoroot on pre-rooted rom can cause a mess, don't do it.

Have tested and flashed CF-Auto-Root to enable PhilZ recovery on 5 of DjeMBeY's pre-rooted ROM's to-date, with no problems thus far. I am aware of the dev's warning on this and am clarifying it with him before publishing any definitive Dummies Guide instructions for general use.

Hey mate ;)

I did't know about this forum, thanks for link.
You DON'T have to use CF-AR for my Pre-Rooted ROM as it's all there... SuperSU.apk can be missing after using CF-AF and you'll have to install it from PlayStore manually though ;)
Just flash ANY Custom Recovery afterwards and that's it! ;)
I won't be checking this FORUM so for any Support please visit my thread @XDA
Thanks and enjoY!

Hello and Welcome to Android Forums DjeMBeY! :wavey:

Thanks for taking the time to come and pay a visit. Thanks also for the prompt reply to my PM earlier today and for clarifying the PhilZ procedure.

As soon as I have a spare 5 min's I shall write a full Dummies Guide as discussed.

I must say, that the Modified, DeOdexed, ROM's that I have used so far have been excellent and your rate of turnaround after the official stock Samsung releases is blooming good.

Keep up the good work DjeMBeY

I agree it's good for those who haven't seen this yet but you were just a bit late for me and I did say thanks so chill out. :D

Totally chilled, thank you Shocky!

I was merely trying to clarify your statement and possibly elicit your opinion on DjeMBeY's ROM's. ;)

DjeMBeY has now added the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Special Edition ROM to his portfolio.

This is very quick work from him as the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition phone only went on sale, $649, less than 2 days ago.

The ROM comes in a CWM flashable .zip, so you will need to be rooted and have a Custom Recovery installed.

GT-I9505 GOOGLE Special Edition ROM - CWM/TWRP/PhilZ flashable ZIP:

- Pre-Rooted
- faux123 Kernel
- DeOdexed
- Zipaligned
- NO WIPE

(Although listed as NO WIPE, I would strongly suggest a nandroid, Titanium and efs file backup beforehand and to wipe cache and dalvik in recovery before installation)

Well o decided to give mf8 a go but the Wi-Fi didn't work(wouldn't come on too search) tried his Wi-Fi fix but I've had to revert back

I'm on MF8, Modified stock version, flashed through Odin, PC, and no problems with Wi-Fi here old son. I guess you may have used the CWM .zip version maybe.

Well I tried the Google edition....didn't work out for me! Kept getting errors when doing things like open dialer and messaging app. That and I like the pull down menu toggles Samsung offer where Google don't have the same. It was nice and slick, for all I used it.Lol

I flashed V2 Special Edition on a full wipe yesterday but like yourself and Atma, I found the stock Google Android to be a bit too featureless and basic and whilst I use DjeMBeY's Lite/Modified MF8 Rom with a lot of the bloatware removed, I prefer things like the camera features, toggles and icons from Samsung that are still there. However, for some, it is nice to have the option I suppose.
