Help General questions thread/discussion (New to Android/M7?)

I just bought an HTC one coming from iPhone 4. I'm really enjoying it so far but I'm having problems getting my emails from my various gmail accounts. I have set it up and sent a few test email, which I received. But a day later I have nothing on my phone but 7 new emails when I check gmail on the computer. HELP? Thanks.

Hello and welcome, howsmatt.

When you ran your test Gmails, did you run them from all of the accounts ("...my various gmail accounts...")?

You have to tap the Gmail account name for each one to sync, one at a time. You should see a list as soon as you tap that area. Then hit the little sync icon, unless you have each one set to auto sync, then they'll just pour in as soon as you touch each account name.

The One will be the first device I have owned that is available across multiple carriers and I am wondering if all ROMs work on all carriers, or is each ROM specific to the carrier?
I have up till this point just assumed that the only difference is the radio you install.

My understanding is that it should work on all carriers. For example, I got my HOXL from AT&T, but it was also sold on other carriers. The ROMs I have installed on my device work across all those carriers and are generic to the device. However, the easiest way to see if this is the case for the one is to go to get.cm and look up your device, and see if the ROM is different for different carriers.

EDIT: I went and looked, and it looks like there is a specific ROM for the AT&T, t-mo, sprint, and unlocked. So perhaps there are more things tht are different across the different models then usual, and you need to pick a ROM based on whether you have a carrier model or an unlocked model.

Thanks. So they can't all just get pushed and tell me as soon as they arrive? This is a feature I really need from a phone.

Also, even after selecting each one I don't get all the emails that are in my gmail account. But I get some???? I don't get it.

howsmatt,

so it seems you are getting the mail you are sending, but you don't see your old, or, "archived" email messages. is this what you sat saying?

is this is the case, you need to tell the app how far back to sync.

from the gmail app,

settings, then choose the account you want to edit,

scroll down, make sure "sync gmail" is ticked, and scroll to "manage labels".

go in there and make sure the folders or "labels" you want to sync are set to sync.

there is also a "days of mail to sync" option also.

if you want to get notified, there is a "notifications" box you check. this will allow you to set up how you want to be notified (vibrate, led lamp, etc.)

That is what I am afraid of. Who's going to buy the One on VZ? I imagine many many people either went with the S4 or switched carriers leaving the One on VZ with few devs. Hopefully there will be some generous support reaching out to us poor neglected VZ customers.

I'm still hoping someone chimes in and says otherwise on the cross-compatibility though :(

When I enter the "Accounts & Sync" screen, I see there is an error icon indicating some sort of sync error with Google accounts. Then when I go to the Google sub-menu, everything seems to be okay.

How do I find out what the error is and then to fix it? Thanks.

i been getting the same error.. i just clear the notification

this is not an issue with the htc one. this has to do with google servers syncing to your wireless device.

you need to go into your dashboard settings on a computer and see if you are seeing an error there.

if you use google sync on chrome for your bookmarks, etc, you may have to log out of that on your chrome browser, and re-login.

click in your google account there on your phone and see what services are getting the error.

The dev community is likely going to be very active, I'd be surprised if not.

The biggest difference is that roms include kernels, and one big job of the kernel is to tie software to hardware.

CDMA hardware is vastly different from GSM. Hip bone connects to the leg bone and pretty soon you need a carrier-specific rom.

The modern tendency is to see teams of teams. Example, Viper - the team is made up of leaders for each carrier / model team. My buddy in the UK ran ViperX last year while I ran Viper4G on my Sprint equivalent model. Different lead devs and individual dev teams but the roms were fundamentally the same.

Similar thing happens with CleanRom, PacMan, CM and others.

If the devs are interested, they go for it. If the community is, they often take up a collection to get the lead dev the phone and then a new team happens.

I could be wrong but I'd be surprised to see the top phone on the biggest US carrier not getting enough dev love to satisfy what you want.

Actually no, I was not clear-sorry . When I sent myself an email it worked, but others weren't coming in. You were right however, "sync gmail" was not clicked for that account, so maybe it will work now. Thanks so much...

I guess I have already learned about the difference between my old iphone and android. I must say if you have some time to play around Android phones are really amazing and the screen on this thing is just nuts. Really can't wait to enjoy all the customizing and such even more once I get the need for my 8 work related emails to sync properly.

To follow up... It seems to be sending emails to my gmail now and they get pushed. The problem for me is that I have emails on different web and non-web based accounts. They are all in "mail" but there they don't push. Is there a way to fix that?

Ugh, sorry for all this. Thanks again to the people who take their time to help with such matters, its very generous.

How do I go into the dashboard settings on my computer?

I logged out of Chrome on the mobile and still had the sync problem. I don't see any Google services reporting errors though. Odd...

Then I unchecked all services and kept only "App Data" checked. It still shows sync error.

Any pointer will be greatly appreciated.

HI,

smoke this over:

https://sites.google.com/a/pressatgoogle.com/googledashboard/

then you get the link and sign in. this has ALLLLLLLLLLLL of your google info! :D

you can even have google send you an alert when your name pops up on the internet.

i have read people who had sync issues who went here, cleared out there chrome sync password, re-set up things and the error was gone.

How do I go into the dashboard settings on my computer?

You have made a couple good points. I knew I was missing something with the kernels and the radio (hardware). Thanks Early!

All services seem to work fine and have no error messages. It is just showing my Google account has sync error. The error message is at the bottom of the screen saying "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly.".

I can unchek all services and just check "App Data". It still shows my Google account has sync error. Very strange...

without seeing your phone and knowing your accounts, its hard to know where the error stems from. i can tell you it should NOT be that way :). i don't have any errors.

if you are on wifi at the moment, try going to cellular/mobile data and see if the error persists.

my point about looking at your google dashboard is that sometimes logging out of chrome, clearing the sync between your accounts, sometimes fixes these errors.

if using the stock app, i think the album cover data is stored with the .mp3 in the ID3 tag.

if there is a full album or single file, try and let gracenote scan it and update it, or move the album/file back to the computer and edit the ID3 tag with a program that allows you to edit ID3 information.

you may try to clear cache and let gracenote re-download...

Can anyone tell me which folder the album art is stored on? I am having a problem with one particular cover so I want to try to delete it and see what happens. thanks in advance

I checked for syncing problems with past models. Your symptoms are different but try this -

Turn off auto sync, reboot, manually sync, turn on auto sync, reboot.

I followed the steps and could manually sync ok. But as soon as I turned on the auto sync, it showed the sync error message. After the 2nd reboot, the error is still there.

Try clicking into your google account and checking which specific things have sync issues?

Thanks. But as I stated previously, all Google services seem to sync okay. There is no error message for any specific Google service. There is just an error message showing Google sync error, and I cannot narrow down which service is having sync error. Hope it is clear.
