Help [possible proximity sensor issue] phone is silent when in pocket

I have recently got my hands on a HTC One. I love it so far but I have a problem. When the handset is in my pocket it does not ring when receiving an incoming call, it just vibrates. It rings fine when it's out in the open.

I believe this is a feature you can set up on some phones. But it is not something you can select or deselect in the sound profiles on my phone. I've tried it in pocket mode, with different ringtones, from different callers, with vibrate turned off. But nothing has cured this.

Any ideas before I head back to the shop?

Thanks :)

Did you try deselecting quiet ring on pickup under sound settings if you have that box checked? Do you have any call control apps installed? If so uninstall them. Have you tried recalibrating the G-sensor calibration and seeing if a factory reset helps? Did you try uninstalling any apps downloaded? Is vibration feedback for calls deselected?

All done, apart from removing apps and factory reset. Only apps I have so far are miniclip pool and Zedge. Would a factory reset lose data, settings, ect? Don't really want to go there at the moment.

A factory reset will put the phone back to the state that you received it in i.e. all you apps, settings etc will be deleted.

It won't touch anything on your virtual SD card like your photos etc.

A factory reset should be the last option really.

Have you tried holding your finger over the proximity sensor and getting someone to ring you?

Sounds like a problem with the proximity sensor.

Assume your volume is up high, do you have the option to increase call volume when it's in your pocket ticked?

Yeah the volume is up high. I've also tried it with the pocket option ticked and unticked. Makes no difference.

Ah it's a proximity sensor, I assumed it was a light sensor or something like that. Anyway, with my finger on top of that it recreates the effect of it being in my pocket, vibes but no ringing. But phone sitting on a desk face up it rings fine. For some reason the sensor is telling the phone not to ring when it is covered, like it is in a work/office type sound profile.

I guess I'm going back to the shop in the morning. Thanks for your help so far guys.

Does seem like a proximity sensor issue then.

If you're going to take it back anyway then you might aswell try a factory reset and see if that fixes the issue, although if you can get a swap there and then it might be worth getting a new phone.

I returned the handset to the shop today. Me and the guy had a fiddle about with settings but could not resolve the issue. We tested a separate HTC One handset and that one worked fine. We then did a full reset and data erase on my handset. This did not cure the problem, my handset would still only vibrate if the proximity sensor was covered.

So the guy in the shop could only conclude that the handset was faulty and replaced it with a new one. Great service from Carphone Wharehouse.

So that's the end of that, thanks again for your help and swift responses.

I'm enjoying my new HTC One and the fact that it rings when someone calls you !!
