Sense UI...what is it exactly

Greetings all, I've done some searches here and on google but haven't been able to find what I want.

What is Sense UI? I have an Eris, still on 1.5, still not rooted, just an out of the box Droid Eris. Do I have this Sense UI?

I'm sure its common knowledge, but perhaps is so common that noone has ever actually explained it...hence not really all that common (and now I have a headache)

Sense ui is a gui/software package that is proprietary to htc corp that incorporates and basically "skins" and enhances the features of the standard android os.

Examples:

The standard android homescreen has 3 screens and just a notificaiton bar

the sense homescreen has 7 screens, a phone button, a shortcut to your app screen, and a add button.

The sense dialer or phone app is improved, etc...

If you turn Sense UI off it will look like the first Picture.

deleting because picture was too big, but to the point, the eris does not look like the nexus one with sense disabled.

Don't forget the other UI, MOTOBLUR. It's found on Motorola devices with Android, minus the Droid.

It's actually a little bit more than that. Sense is more than just the home replacement - it's a custom Android build as well, with customized replacement apps for the browser, contacts, dialer, keyboard, the photo gallery app, etc.
