Nexus One To Receive An OTA Soon

'Is and Update near?' Post #21 on Nexus one Forums suggest the people over at XDA have debunked the rumour. :(

linky looky

to further elaborate...post #20 from the XDA forum:
Update incoming? - Page 2 - xda-developers

I just called HTC and they said Nexus One support is actually through Google themselves now. The number is 1-888-716-3593 7a-10p eastern time (so they just closed 20 minutes ago).

I asked if he had any idea of an update coming to fix some of these issues and he said no idea, would have to call Google.

So if the guy from the frandroid article called HTC and they said that, it's 100% false.

Well...knowing Google, we'll get our update sooner or later, that's something we can count on ;)

Signing off,

okay who doubted me???

Android 2.2 is coming. What features do you want? – Android and Me

"Some of the rumored features for Android 2.2 include:

JIT compiler
Free additional RAM
OpenGL ES 2.0 enhancements
Flash 10.1 support
Fixed problem with “crazy screen” / Resolution of cross multitouch
Activation of Color Trackball
Enable FM radio
Some of these features are plausible and others we have no clue.

The JIT compiler has already been confirmed by Google and we expect to find out new details during Google I/O. Android engineers will be leading a discussion that informs devs how to test and tune their apps to work with the new compiler.

Additional free RAM should come thanks to the new Linux kernel being used in Froyo. Google is moving from 2.6.29 to the newer 2.6.32 which makes it possible to address the extra RAM. This has already been done in custom ROMs like CyanogenMod so expect this feature for sure.

I’m no expert on OpenGL, but it has long been rumored that Froyo (or a future build) will add new APIs to the Android NDK which will let Java devs have full access to the OpenGL ES 2.0 library.

Flash 10.1 is coming in the first half of the year. It is entirely possible it could be tied to a future Android firmware and be included with an OTA update.

We have already addressed the HTC touch sensor issues. It sounds like a future software update could be used to clean this up a little.

Multicolor trackball notifications are definitely coming. Android hackers like ChainsDD have already unlocked this feature for users of custom ROMs. Google advertised the multicolor trackball during its launch of the Nexus One, but the feature was cut from the final Android 2.1 build.

When it comes to the FM radio, I have no idea. Other HTC phones on a similar Snapdragon platform (Desire and Incredible) include the FM radio so it’s not out of the question that the N1 has it too.

I spoke with Google’s Eric Tseng during CES and he told me there were many secrets left in the Nexus One that we would discover later.

When is it Android 2.2 coming out?
Circle May 19th on your calendar. This is the opening day of Google I/O and I’m anticipating the release of Android 2.2 (and maybe the Flash 10.1 beta) will be tied to this event. Google has provided every developer attending the event a free Droid or Nexus One, so it is possible to see a simultaneous release on both devices.

I’m really curious how first generation devices are going to play with this release. We are expecting most phones to receive Android 2.1 this month, so it will be interesting to see how Froyo fits in. Some of the Android engineers have been talking about Froyo on the Google boards and it is unclear if the HTC Dream and Magic will be able to support it since they only have 192 MB of RAM.

What features do you want in the next version of Android?
What is the biggest issue that you think Google needs to address in the next release of Android? Are you satisfied with the rumored list of changes? Is there some glaring feature that you think Google is overlooking? Share your hopes and predictions in the comments and let us know what you think."

As great as that sounds I highly doubt it would be froyo. I believe that it'll be an "update-2." The release of froyo now or even in the next few months will only fragment android even more. With all the different android phones out now only 2-3 are currently running 2.1
It could be done if the update to 2.1 made it possible to streamline the process to 2.2.

What would it matter if it were only made available to nexus one or maybe droid owners only? Everyone knows the big advantage to having a nexus is you will get the updates first.

The "big deal" is that Google has openly said it would find a way to prevent fragmentation--doing that would completely go against what they're hoping to do.

Awesome! The N1's first major update! It will definitely be released before or during the I/O conference seeing as they are holding a session dedicated to jit. I'm guessing before since they gave all devs an n1 or driod in prep for the conferance. Those painful days of waiting for updates that never came on my old hero are no more!!

If this is true and soon then it solidifies my belief that I was correct to get an N1. It is already one of the best phones on the market and if it continues to get updates like this for what I would call my expected lifetime then I will be very happy.

I've rarely kept a phone for a year but this is a possibility with this sort of support.

I wonder where this leaves our friends with a Hero who are still calling out for 2.1? Will phones like the Desire or Incredible be left on 2.1 and be considered out of date almost as they are released? The N1 may not be perfect but comments like Eric Tseng. saying there are many more secrets to come out of the N1 are really exciting. We already know that there is an FM radio in there and looks like we will get multi colour trackball soon too...

The other phones that are running 2.1 will get their updates too in due time. If the rumours on the net are correct, then Froyo (and/or Gingerbread) will be the version that is suppose to fix the defragmentation problem.

There's a recent article this past week that discuss this in more detail on how Google will implement this but can't find it :(

If all those rumoured features are true then eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEeeeeeeeee iwantitIwantitiwantitiwantitNOW *bounces up and down like a hyperactive schoolgirl*

Seriously tho if we get flash by may 19th that would come as a total surprise to me. Altho I have already signed up for the beta for when it's released.

Yeah that's what I meant. I signed up to get the flash beta WHEN it's released. Whenever that may be..
No need to worry about your nexus updates tho.. they'll just roll in by themselves :)

haha, you were talking about the Adobe Flash :p I thought 'flash' was a slang for those that root their phones...like somehow there's an underground release of Froyo that you need to sign up to be a tester XD
This doesn't make sense now...but when I read your post it did!!!
