Help battery drain?

I like the phone and wanted it for the bigger screen and camera, but don't want to have to always 'clear' cache and stop apps running, that is a pain in the butt.

You shouldn't have to do that unless it's a buggy app, and then the solution is to uninstall the app.

Edit: Looking above, most your battery is going to the screen. You indicated it was set pretty low, but I would change it to automatic. Automatic works really well, IMHO.

Also, if it's sitting on your desk I would look to see if there are things making the screen come on during the day.

tytlyf, by going to sleep do you mean the screen going black? It does after 30 seconds and does not come back on until I hit the home button, I have been on facebook, texting and usual stuff this morning and it is down to 67% from 100 at 7 am, it is now 10:53

that in itself doesn't sound bad to me, but it depends on your screen time.....from 7-10:53 could be a couple hours of screen time and that would be an expected amount of battery drain. So settings>more>battery>screen and say what the "Time on" is.

My screen on time today has been 1hr 35 min. With using 71% of battery from %100. I have 71% battery left as of right now. I am using auto brightness. I usually get 12 to 14 hrs. A day with around 20% battery left. I do use WiFi for about 10hrs. And Bluetooth for about an hour.

As others have suggested, check the on screen time and let us know what it says.

You gotta use that wakelock detector.
My phone was doing what you described and I noticed that the phone would never sleep. Not meaning having the screen automatically turn off after a set time, but the phone would be running processes and doing things full time when it was off in lock mode. I found it to be a google syncing thing but the first thing you should do is just run that App I mentioned after a couple hours of batter use so we can look at the results. From there, you should be able to fix it.

hopefully someone else chimes in as I'm certainly no expert, but that seems about right to me. You're on pace for ~4.5 hours of screen time which is basically what I generally get. I'm sure some others might get more, but I THINK that is normal. Gotta remember, you have a bigger screen and a faster CPU now than your old phone....can't expect Prius gas mileage when you are driving a Lambo.

Again, that is just my opinion based on my own phone, others will speak up soon I'm sure.

You folks want to see battery drain, try the HDMI out. Jeepers. HDMI out works great, but even when using USB to help keep the device charging, it is a net negative- and then some. I do not even think the stock battery would last for a two hour movie, unless usb is plugged in. Zoinks!

That is if playing back local. If streaming with Netflix, cut it to about 90 minutes. Estimate, but not thinking too far off.

I think battery usage is very independent due to individual usage patterns and location specific issues. I do not use anything like Juice Defender (used in the past on another 'droid).

I do use the power saving option,
don't do much of any streaming,
leave wifi on pretty much all the time,
GPS is off unless needed,
disable location services,
smart screen is off,
air view is on,
all motions and gestures are on with these exceptions:
-air move
-tilt
-pan
Sync is on, but only for email and google apps/calendar/contacts/gmail

I've had an occasional hiccup, but overall, I end the day (16-18 hours) with 40-50% battery remaining. I'm generally in a wifi environment, but the strength varies widely. My usage is probably light to moderate with phone calls, texting, checking weather and reading emails.

My family has three of the iP5 phones and my lone GS4. My GS4 trumps the iP5 by a wide margin in the battery dept (and all other depts IMHO). ;)

Edit: I should correct this post about battery life. My kids suck through battery life in no time. But they are heavy iP5 users. My wife's iP5 battery trails the GS4 battery, but not anything like the kids. Her usage is similar to mine, although probably a lighter user than me. So it still goes back to individual usage. ;)

5.Another thing with the S4's is the S Voice. It's their version of Siri. I can't remember if it is turned on or not but S Voice you can set a wake up command...So when your phone is at the lock screen you can say Hi Galaxy or any phrase you want and it goes into S Voice...well this keeps the mic running and uses more battery...it even says it in the app settings that it will..So go into S Voice->Menu button->Settings->Wake on Command...make sure that is turned off.

6. Shut off gps if you arent using it...Especially if you are indoors alot..gps tends to loose signal easy and if it can't find it it will keep searching.

So, I was curious about these...

I turned off the S-Voice thing and the GPS last night and saw a HUGE improvement in my battery life. I was down to about 38% after about 20 hours. I was streaming music from Google Music for quite a while, and also used several other apps throughout the day along with a couple of phone calls.

Then, I charged it to 100% right before leaving work. It's now been 1:20, and I'm still at 98% having used a few times (not much action) since then.

The GPS will likely only make a significant difference if you're using a program that requires it. I don't recall the program on my old Android, but it would suck a lot of power if you left the GPS on.

ok I have wakelock detector...now what do I do? it lists these running...
messaging 32s
facebook 12s
google search 1s
systme ui .7
samsung push .4s
clock 1s
calendar storage .5s
gmail .4s
elm agent .3s
google play music .1s
calendar .1s
Thanks. At the top of the list it should tell you the awake/sleep time. If you click on that green/red bar it will open a new window. Can you take a screenshot of what you are seeing on a couple of the screens? Those are some low stats and I'm guessing you may have only ran it after it was on your phone for a very short time. Thanks! Take a screenshot by Holding the home button and power button at same time.

great helpful post tytlyf (and you have to tell us where your name comes from...is it short for something or what? lol)

Anyway, looking at your screenie, your phone is down to 50% and your screen was on for less than 2 hours. Barbz comment earlier indicated she had a screen time of 2 hours and 3 minutes and was down to 57% remaining.....that to me looks like her phone is acting normal especially when I compare it to yours....you actually only had your screen on for 2 hours out of those 2 days. She is a power user while you seem to use your phone less.

I'll re-admit that I am certainly no expert and I am just trying to learn like a lot of people here, but just wanted to share my thoughts and if I'm wrong, by all means correct me.

My name is something I've had for years I just made up for one of my first email accounts. "Tight Life"
I don't use my phone that much but that's how I get the longer period of life. I understand your post and thank you.
If I were to guess what I would get on a full charge if using heavy screen time (no games, just web stuff/videos) I'd probably be able to get 5 -6 hours screen time w/ 24 hour life.
I think I've got this battery tweaked pretty good, but like I said, that's just me and my particular situation.
I also use Easy Battery Saver and use it's advanced setup. I have pretty much everything disabled in it's settings except the data/wifi monitoring and Night mode set to 11pm-830am (keeps mobile network disconnected during period)

To give you an idea of what my problem was, take a look at this screenshot. The phone would never sleep. Just draining the battery.
