Root Before rooting to 2.1

Ok, so I am pretty much sick of 1.5 and have decided that my best bet to get the most out of my eris is to root to 2.1 so I have the advantages of the new OS and gain root access. But before I dive in I have a few questions.

1 - Do I need to reformat my eris before doing the 2.1 root? Currently I have Faceebook and several other apps installed as well as about 30 photos. I don't know if the phone needs to be "factory" before proceeding with the upgrade or if it matters if you have apps and photos on the device already.

2 - If I can keep the apps and photos on my device and then root/upgrade will they carry over or will they be lost in translation? Also, will my contacts and their Facebook link remain in tact or will that be "lost"?

3 - Once I do the upgrade what should I do immediately after to get the most speed and functionality out of my newly rooted 2.1 device? (Program removal, app installs etc.)

That's all I can think of at the moment. I am looking to do this soon so any help would be greatly appreciated. Any other tips and advice are welcome too.

-Cheers

1) All your apps will be deleted If you want, you can make backups of your apps using the free app ASTRO, Your photos will not be touched because They are on you Sd Card and nothing happens to your sd card during the root process
2) you contacts should stay intact and linked to facebook if they are saved with google which im pretty sure it is since my phone does it automatically.
3) Don't stay on the Originaly Root Rom its Very Buggy, Look around at different roms see what people think about them and from there.
If you want my advice senseable 2.0 is a very stable rom and has a very nice theme over sense.

What do you do to change the rom you are running after you root? I have heard a lot of good things about sense-able 2.0 but I'm not sure how to run it after root.

I am beginning the process of upgrading to 2.1 root now but I still need some help. Do I start with "A. Pre-requisite" or do the "I - Root" step first? If someone could tell me where to begin and where to end that would be great.

You could either Root or do pre requisites doesn't matter which you do first because in order to get root you don't use the computer at all.
When you need the pre-requisites is when you want to flash the recovery,if you don't have the drivers(if you have windows) your phone wont be recognized by the system thus wont be able to flash the recovery.
If you want help while you are rooting your phone go to the IRC at irc.thefuzz4.net and joing #ErisRootHelp There is usually someone there to help.

In order to flash a new Rom you need to have flashed the recovery first once you have done that you reboot into recovery by pressing vol up and power button then choosing wipe factory/data, wipe dalvik, and then choosing flash from sd card, choose the rom you want from your sd card and let the phone do the rest.
The Rooting process seems hard at first but once you do it, you'll see how simple it really it is.

Thanks for the help. I am hung up on this step.

10. You can test to make sure everything is working by going to a command prompt, go to the \tools\ directory of the Android SDK, and type: "adb shell". If you see a "$" (or "#" if you're already rooted) sign you're good.

I can find my folder tools but I see no "directory" .

Any help?

Hehe..No your in the right place /tools is the folder you need to be in they did a little typo I guess but you are NOT looking for the folder called "directory" if you are in the tools folder you are in the right place. directory is just another word for Folder so they meant you are looking for the /tools folder. if the # doesn't come up right away try
Code:
adb shell
su
You don't have to do that step if you don't want to, thats just to make sure you have root.
if I were you I would move on to the next step. and get the recovery flashed so you can have a new rom tonight.
