Help How do you use NFC?

I bought some NFC tags yesterday and I have been playing with them since then.

I really bought them out of curiosity and because they were cheap. So far the only use I have thought of is to enable my phone to recognise when it is in my cheap desk dock (I could have achieved something similar with a soldering iron, a bunch of resistors and a bit of time but this was easier).

This led me to wonder what other people might be using NFC for?

I'm in the US and haven't used it for payments, but I have an NFC tag on the underside of my bedside table that automatically sets the alarm the next morning when I put my phone on its charger for the night.

I have one under a lightswitch plate next to the door that I tap on my way in/out of the house that will turn off WiFi, and GPS on when I'm leaving and turn on WiFi, off GPS when I'm getting home.

never used it for anything useful that's for sure. doesn't look like we'll get nfc payment apps in the uk until H2 2014 so still pretty pointless tech.

I don't replace phones that often, so that would still be well within the lifetime of my phone. Personally I can't believe any one buys a phone today without NFC unless they are the type that gets a new phone every year.

Well I've got three programmed so far, if I had a set time to get up everyday I'd include alarm however......

I have one in the car to take Wi-Fi off and put volumes up etc
One on my table next to my seat in the living room, this takes volumes back to a sensible indoor level, Wi-Fi on
And one on my bedside table turns to silent, sets screen filter app on(usually coming to bed after the Mrs and she hates the bright light if I'm still checking on here before sleeping)

think I'm going to write one for my work and possibly one for at the door, maybe even for my hut!

certainly things you can do are set different ring tones, launch apps, configure specific settings, send texts/make calls pretty much anything you can do with the phone, can be set up to do with a tag :)

I just programmed my first tag today for the car.

It turns on the Car Dock function and turns off the screen timeout. The second tap turns off the Car Dock function, returns the screen timeout to 1 minute and turns on Wi-Fi (which is turned off by the Car Dock).

I used the NFC Task Launcher program, which if I recall correctly was recommended by SebaKL in another thread. The Samsung program doesn't seem to have an option to turn off the screen timeout.

Ok I haven't thought of this and I am glad you did because I think I will do something similar.

I also have one on my WiFi router guests can tap and it'll automatically sign them into my home network with the correct ID and password

That is really clever. And a good way to make your friends regret having bought a phone without NFC. :D

Actually, that would make a good Samsung commercial. Three friends come over, one has an iPhone . . ..

I'm on the 4GEE network and EE have recently released a payment app for NFC called 'cash on tap'. At the minute its only available for EE customers with an EE phone but I'm sure it'll roll out to more phones soon. Its really cool though, even though I get funny looks from the cashier when I pay for stuff with my phone
