How do I tell when the phone is off?

This might be a stupid question, but how do you tell the phone is off without turning it on?

I.e. if the phone is taking a long time to shut down, the screen times out before the phone is off. The only way to tell that it is still shutting down is to tap the power button to wake up the screen. But if you do that once it has shut down, it starts the phone back up again.

Anybody?

Yeah fair question! But why do you want to test to see that the phone has shut down?

Several reasons.

I'm curious to see how long it takes to shut down, as this seems to vary.

Sometimes it takes forever to shut down (like it is still going after 30 minutes). As the whole point of shutting it down would be to stop it draining any power, leaving it to take forever to shut down sort of defeats that, so if it is taking ages I can take the battery out instead, but if I check and it has already shut down, then it fires back up and I've got to wait for it to boot properly, then shut it down again (usually happens pretty quick having just booted it).

I can sort of see why they didn't account for this, as if the phone always shuts down within a minute or so then there is no need to be able to check whether it is still shutting down without turning it back on if it has.

The problem is that it doesn't shut down quickly.

I'm new to Android too but I have found that it all depends on how much you're doing with it, which makes sense of course. A normal shutdown only takes 10 seconds or so.

What does bug me more, now you've highlighted it, is once the phone is off it only takes a quick accidental press to switch it back on!
