Help Battery not trickle charging? Can I leave it charging overnight?

Hi, on my last phone I was told that I can leave my phone charging overnight because when the battery got to 100, it would slowly trickle down to around 93 before charging back up. However, on my new S4 I have not noticed this pattern. It seems to stay at 100 and not trickle at all. Is this OK? If not, what can I do? I don't really understand why it wouldn't be trickling. The last thing I want to do is ruin the battery.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Trickle charging is charging a battery at a slow rate, not having the battery charge up and then use a small percentage of its power and then charge back up. There would be no reason whatsoever for a battery system to do that.

What you might find is that a battery might heat up while charging and not be able to take a full charge at that heat (but indicate 100%). I'm not sure why it wouldn't stay at 100% as it cooled down and took more of a charge. Perhaps some phone charge systems would have the charge stay cycled off for a set period of time?????

But yes, you can leave your phone charging overnight.

Well my old phone was an evo 3d which is a little over two years old. All I know is when I left it on the charger, it would slowly drop a few percent once it got to 100 then it would charge back up, and with the s4 I have not noticed this. Sounds like it isn't a problem though.

Well, you SHOULD be able to, but some of us have posted about the phone turning itself off and needing a battery pull to get going again if left on the charger overnight. Why, who knows? My replacement S4 has been running fine, but I do not leave it on the charger any longer than necessary, or at least not more than an hour or two longer than necessary.

So could a phone running hot cause the battery to actually not charge fully? Even though it indicates 100%, affecting overall battery life once you take it off the charger?

Do Otterboxes create extra heating with the phone?

The reason I'm asking is that I've recently started experiencing ridiculous battery drain. I first noticed it immediately after the 4.2.2 update, so I think there is an issue there. But, I also got my Otterbox in and started using it at around the same time.

So could the Otterbox create heating during the charge that would keep the battery from properly charging, thereby decreasing battery life?

I'm not sure if this is relevant but I've seen a change in my S4 recently.
I plug it in overnight and it charges to 100% then stops charging. In the morning I pick it up and it says 100% until I pull the plug and it drops to 87% or thereabouts. Plug it in again and it recharges the extra. I seem to have lost the trickle 'keep it topped up' mode. I changed the battery over, I have two, and same behaviour.

It's easy enough to work round, I switch the charger off then on, have breakfast and a shower and it's full and stays full but it's a bit annoying.

I'd say not. I have an Outterbox Commuter case that stays on my S4 while charging over night and the battery temp is around 85 degrees. (Its a little higher if I'm using my phone while charging.)

Are you using the stock charger? I noticed that non stock chargers don't work very well with the S4. (Slower charging, not charging at all depending on usage.)

Hi all, if I get you guys right, can I still extend the charging of my phone when it reaches 100%? say, another 20mins? or so? I am using Battery doctor now, upon 100%, I saw this trickle charging part, about 20 minutes more.. though it only my 2nd day of usage, I am not sure if this will help extend my battery life. . .

You should be fine. Once it hits 100%, its suppose to stop charging the battery. I've had my S4 since June and I have left it on the charger, when phone was powered on/off, over night with no problems. Just keep an eye out for heat either in the phone or the charger on both ends. Mines have never gotten hot. I use my phone as an alarm clock on the weekends and have it plugged up.

I never turn my phone off and I charge it every night all night.

I did exactly the same with my S2 and I never had any problems and I don't expect to with my S4. Even if doing so did cause a problem (and it won't), batteries are cheap and fortunately, we can replace them easily so it's just not worth worrying about.

Absolutely. It's not like the GS4 is an iPhone or HTC One. ;)

Love that removeable battery and SD card storage!

One of the features I love about my S4. I have two stock batteries that I alternate between each week. (One gets used for a whole week then i switch.) Nothing like being able to swap batteries when I need more power, on a busy heavy usage day. My personal opinion is that manufactures that have sealed phones, are guaranteeing you to upgrade when the battery is dying, even if you don't want to and there's nothing wrong with the phone, since you can't replace the battery only.

Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries

This is interesting. Especially point 1: mobile devices should be turned off to charge. Really?

Quote from the above link:

Simple Guidelines for Charging Lithium-based Batteries

  • A portable device should be turned off while charging. This allows the battery to reach the threshold voltage unhindered and reflects the correct saturation current responsible to terminate the charge. A parasitic load confuses the charger.
  • Charge at a moderate temperature. Do not charge below freezing.
  • Lithium-ion does not need to be fully charged; a partial charge is better.
  • Chargers use different methods for
