Moto Droid Maxx Pre-Release Thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
I spent about a half hour at my local Verizon Wireless franchise store today getting some information.

I went away for a while ant then went back and pre-ordered the Droid Maxx with a two-year extended protection plan. ($100 deductible)

When it finally ships it will be Fed-Ex and I will get notified as will the store. It will ship to the store.

When it is finally there I will go in and see how it "feels". If I like it we will finish the transaction. Otherwise I will walk away.

They sold me the first Bionic the day it was announced and I am their first Maxx pre-order.

I'll convert to 2GB from Unlimited at the same time and save about $30/month.

... Thom

Sell your unlimited on Ebay. Don't just let it go for free. It may pay for your new phone.

Just came across this, Wirefly is offering the Maxx for $199 on contract with pre-order. For those interested they are offering the Ultra for $149 and the Mini for $49.99.

Here is the Link:

I notice that this phone has NFC. Does anyone know if Google Wallet will be pre-installed on it? If not, can I side load it and get it to work without being rooted?

That almost seems too good to be true! Has anyone ever ordered from these guys before? Are they legit?

I actually ordered my first smartphone from them, the Samsung Fascinate (Galaxy s1) way back in 2010. If your buying subsidized, they ask for some real personal information so that they can verify your account with Verizon. Like part of all of your ss number, driver's license number, etc. But if you do it, it is legit. I got my phone 4 days after ordering, 2 days for verification, 2 days for shipping since it came from Maryland.

I figured as much, but will I be able to side load it from XDA or other sources?
I'm sure if the device is popular enough, they'll attempt to hack it in there. Verizon is rumored to be fully launching ISIS by the end of the year I believe, so you might have that option. Though it would personally pain me to support their program after all the crap Google Wallet users/supporters have had to endure.

I spoke with a CSR from Verizon. Here is our conversation regarding the pricing and promotions:

You are now chatting with 'Darrick'
Darrick: Hi and welcome to Verizon Wireless Sales Chat, my name is Darrick, May I have your name please?
You: Jeff
Jeff: Hi
Darrick: How are you doing today?
Jeff: I have a question about the pricing of the Droid Maxx
Darrick: Go ahead.
Jeff: I've recently come across an article here Droid Maxx Promo Code and Coupons August 2013
Jeff: it's saying that I can get $100 off of the Droid Maxx, is that true?
Jeff: I know that Wirefly is selling it at $100 off with pre-order, I didn't know if it was the same thing here.
Darrick: I have not heard or seen anything like this, the promotion was not released by verizon though.
Darrick: Keep in mind that they are a third party retail as well and have an additional contract with them.
Jeff: DROID MAXX by MOTOROLA for Verizon Wireless - Wirefly.com
Jeff: I know I just didn't know if Verizon was offering it as well
Darrick: verizon directly is not, no.
Jeff: okay thanks!
Darrick: You are welcome, be sure to read the fine print!

August 15th is my pre-order date, but from what I've been told by phone representatives, I can call in a week early they can move my date back. I'm torn over buying it at retail to preserve my grandfathered data or buying it at discounted pricing. The truth is I average less than 2GB per month so unlimited is not that necessary for me.

If I do buy with discounted pricing I will be selling my unlimited plan via assumption of liability through ebay. I had no idea that was possible until recently. My son had unlimited and about a year ago I updated his phone losing his unlimited data. I didn't know that Assumption of Liability was possible. People are paying between $200 and $350 for unlimited data now.

Verizon Unlimited Data Plan No Contract with Upgrade Now | eBay

if you have an upgrade on the 15th, and your son already lost unlimited and doens't have an upgrade available, what you do is transfer your upgrade to his line (called an alternate upgrade) and upgrade *his* line with a new subsadized phone using the upgrade you transferred to him. then, do a "device only switch" to switch his old phone back onto his line, and the new phone onto your line, keeping your unlimited data. There's lots of info on this, just google. If only 4g phones are involved in all this (his old phone, your old phone, and the new subsidized phone), then just do the upgrade of his line (through the laternate upgrade from your line), then switch the 4g sim cards around; no device switch necessary.

So what you're saying is, transfer my line and liability to my sons line, I take his line and apply my unlimited data to it, meanwhile I upgrade my device with subsidized pricing, the. Switch everything back keeping my unlimited data?

hmmm...i was assuming that your line and your son's line are on the same family plan. in that case no transfer of line/liability, rather a transfer of the upgrade (upgrading using someone else's upgrade is called "alternate upgrad" or "buddy upgrade" in technical vzw speak). But now i'm thinking maybe my assumption was off. I'll try to find some threads for you. There's one on xda, in the S4 section, one on android central, and one on reddit that come to mind offhand. Lots of resources to get this info through searching. End result: you get subsidy pricing + keep your unlimited.

My son and I are on the same family plan.

then this will work very easily for you. like i said, no need for assumption of liability etc. just use your upgrade on your son's line, activate the new phone on his line, and device only switch the phones back (or just swap 4g sim cards).

the key is, never use any upgrade on the unlimited line itself. you can use the upgrade that originates from the unlimited line on the limited line (as long as the limited line doesn't have it's own upgrade available at the time).

here's the thread:

and here's a pretty good post from that thread:

Thanks for this. My wife has an iPhone 5 on a 2 gig plan and my line is unlimited. Sounds like I should be able to keep it if I decide to jump on this. Thanks!

I am also very much looking forward to the Droid Maxx. I mean, it's the same CPU, same X8 cores processing system, same display (albeit a little bigger), same Android release, and same amount of bloat (I'm assuming) with a bigger battery and more internal storage (if the whole 32GB exclusive to AT&T is true) for only $50 more... why wouldn't I get the Droid Maxx?

I understand what Motorola is trying to do with the Moto X... a phone that is the same across all networks, like the iPhone. But if the Maxx is basically the same phone as the X with a larger display, larger battery, and double the internal storage for only $50 more, I'd be stupid not to buy it. I know that personalization is something important for some people and I'm certainly not knocking that. It's just not important to me (not sure why that matters to a lot of people as most people put their phones in some sort of case the moment they buy it and never take it out). Same goes with the wallpaper... customizing the wallpaper on a website before purchase is "big whoop" because I can load my own wallpaper in about 30 seconds after I turn it on.

Anyway, one will be mine as soon as I hear a root method is released. :)

Caution Regarding Upgrading With Wirefly

My plan was to transfer my upgrade to my son's 2GB plan and upgrade through Wirefly getting their $100 discount, then transferring that phone to my account and giving him my Gnex. However, I now don't think that's possible using Wirefly.

Take a look:

"I'm going to do the same thing. Trying to find out if I can do the Wirefly deal on top of this. Also, I have a 20-month upgrade, not a full 24-month upgrade. I tried to buy a phone from Costco Dec 2011 and Verizon denied me...said 20-month upgrades had to be done with Verizon only. Good Thread on this, but haven't seen anything about Wirefly on it...[Instruction]How to Keep Unlimited Data on Verizon

Update: Wirefly requires you to keep your new phone activated on the upgraded line for 181 days....

INSTANT SAVINGS DISCOUNTS
Wirefly promises you savings in the form of instant discounts with no rebates or gimmicks when you sign up for wireless carrier service on a 2 year agreement. We are able to offer these great discounts because we get paid by the wireless carrier for having helped them get (or retain) a good customer. Delivering on this promise means that you must agree to maintain your agreement for a minimum of 181 days after activation. If we are notified by the carrier that they are not going to pay us because your phone has been deactivated during this period, then this may lead to additional charges.

To provide you with significant savings vs. buying in a retail store, the price you paid for your device includes an Instant Savings Discount from Wirefly.

By accepting this Instant Savings Discount, you agree to repay $200 of this discount ($400 for smartphones, tablets, and netbooks) and authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of this amount if, you signed up for a 2 year agreement and during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, your wireless carrier notifies us that the services you purchased have been suspended, disconnected, or deactivated, or if you return your purchase outside of the return and exchange provisions of our Satisfaction Guarantee.

Other than simply deactivating a line we’ve activated, your wireless carrier could notify us that you deactivated if:

You fail to pay the carrier in accordance with their terms and conditions
You transfer equipment we activate on one line to another carrier line, even within the same account
You activate this equipment on a new line of service with your current carrier and use it to replace an existing line by deactivating the existing line."

I just called Wirefly and confirmed the above is true. If you activate your new Maxx on another line and transfer that phone to your line prior to 181 days, even if the line is on the same account, you are in breech of contract with them and they will bill you $400 once they are notified by Verizon Wireless.

Translation, don't do it. We will be paying $100 more to get it from Verizon.

All I've seen of the "Zap App" was the 10 seconds they gave to it in some of the VERY FEW reviews out there. I was kind of meh about it. BUT . . . I may be changing my tune. I came across this article:

Cloud File Sharing Just Got Easier with Droid Zap

It actually may be kind of cool. I hate to say it, but in order for it to be fully functional, they have to add iPhone compatibility. My wife and several of my friends are iPhone users and sharing content this way will only be useful if they can receive and send back.
