Moto Droid Maxx Pre-Release Thread

I spent about a half hour at my local Verizon Wireless franchise store today getting some information.

I went away for a while ant then went back and pre-ordered the Droid Maxx with a two-year extended protection plan. ($100 deductible)

When it finally ships it will be Fed-Ex and I will get notified as will the store. It will ship to the store.

When it is finally there I will go in and see how it "feels". If I like it we will finish the transaction. Otherwise I will walk away.

They sold me the first Bionic the day it was announced and I am their first Maxx pre-order.

I'll convert to 2GB from Unlimited at the same time and save about $30/month.

Sell your unlimited on Ebay. Don't just let it go for free. It may pay for your new phone.

I used to be really excited for this phone, but a friend of mine has had reception issues even with exchanged phones ... which has scared me off of this phone. But I do love the front speakers and the low light camera. I'll still check it out at the store.

I notice that this phone has NFC. Does anyone know if Google Wallet will be pre-installed on it? If not, can I side load it and get it to work without being rooted?

I actually ordered my first smartphone from them, the Samsung Fascinate (Galaxy s1) way back in 2010. If your buying subsidized, they ask for some real personal information so that they can verify your account with Verizon. Like part of all of your ss number, driver's license number, etc. But if you do it, it is legit. I got my phone 4 days after ordering, 2 days for verification, 2 days for shipping since it came from Maryland.

I figured as much, but will I be able to side load it from XDA or other sources?

I'm sure if the device is popular enough, they'll attempt to hack it in there. Verizon is rumored to be fully launching ISIS by the end of the year I believe, so you might have that option. Though it would personally pain me to support their program after all the crap Google Wallet users/supporters have had to endure.

Yes they are legit. I ordered my son's DROID 2 there without issue and a buddy of mine ordered his Incredible and Gnex there with our issues.

I just went on VZW and pretended that I was a new customer buying the phone pre-order. I was going to test and see if I could get to a "enter coupon code" page, but it wants your name and address and stuff before I got there so I backed out.

August 15th is my pre-order date, but from what I've been told by phone representatives, I can call in a week early they can move my date back. I'm torn over buying it at retail to preserve my grandfathered data or buying it at discounted pricing. The truth is I average less than 2GB per month so unlimited is not that necessary for me.

If I do buy with discounted pricing I will be selling my unlimited plan via assumption of liability through ebay. I had no idea that was possible until recently. My son had unlimited and about a year ago I updated his phone losing his unlimited data. I didn't know that Assumption of Liability was possible. People are paying between $200 and $350 for unlimited data now.

if you have an upgrade on the 15th, and your son already lost unlimited and doens't have an upgrade available, what you do is transfer your upgrade to his line (called an alternate upgrade) and upgrade *his* line with a new subsadized phone using the upgrade you transferred to him. then, do a "device only switch" to switch his old phone back onto his line, and the new phone onto your line, keeping your unlimited data. There's lots of info on this, just google. If only 4g phones are involved in all this (his old phone, your old phone, and the new subsidized phone), then just do the upgrade of his line (through the laternate upgrade from your line), then switch the 4g sim cards around; no device switch necessary.

hmmm...i was assuming that your line and your son's line are on the same family plan. in that case no transfer of line/liability, rather a transfer of the upgrade (upgrading using someone else's upgrade is called "alternate upgrad" or "buddy upgrade" in technical vzw speak). But now i'm thinking maybe my assumption was off. I'll try to find some threads for you. There's one on xda, in the S4 section, one on android central, and one on reddit that come to mind offhand. Lots of resources to get this info through searching. End result: you get subsidy pricing + keep your unlimited.

Thanks for this. My wife has an iPhone 5 on a 2 gig plan and my line is unlimited. Sounds like I should be able to keep it if I decide to jump on this. Thanks!

I am also very much looking forward to the Droid Maxx. I mean, it's the same CPU, same X8 cores processing system, same display (albeit a little bigger), same Android release, and same amount of bloat (I'm assuming) with a bigger battery and more internal storage (if the whole 32GB exclusive to AT&T is true) for only $50 more... why wouldn't I get the Droid Maxx?

I understand what Motorola is trying to do with the Moto X... a phone that is the same across all networks, like the iPhone. But if the Maxx is basically the same phone as the X with a larger display, larger battery, and double the internal storage for only $50 more, I'd be stupid not to buy it. I know that personalization is something important for some people and I'm certainly not knocking that. It's just not important to me (not sure why that matters to a lot of people as most people put their phones in some sort of case the moment they buy it and never take it out). Same goes with the wallpaper... customizing the wallpaper on a website before purchase is "big whoop" because I can load my own wallpaper in about 30 seconds after I turn it on.

Anyway, one will be mine as soon as I hear a root method is released.

Caution Regarding Upgrading With Wirefly

My plan was to transfer my upgrade to my son's 2GB plan and upgrade through Wirefly getting their $100 discount, then transferring that phone to my account and giving him my Gnex. However, I now don't think that's possible using Wirefly.

Take a look:

I just called Wirefly and confirmed the above is true. If you activate your new Maxx on another line and transfer that phone to your line prior to 181 days, even if the line is on the same account, you are in breech of contract with them and they will bill you $400 once they are notified by Verizon Wireless.

Translation, don't do it. We will be paying $100 more to get it from Verizon.

All I've seen of the "Zap App" was the 10 seconds they gave to it in some of the VERY FEW reviews out there. I was kind of meh about it. BUT . . . I may be changing my tune. I came across this article:

It actually may be kind of cool. I hate to say it, but in order for it to be fully functional, they have to add iPhone compatibility. My wife and several of my friends are iPhone users and sharing content this way will only be useful if they can receive and send back.
