I was a huge Shapewriter fan, but have since gotten used to Swype. Every person I've shared it with are in love with Swype (as am I now). Great program.
Both are excellent, but I've now gotten used to Swype and it seems a bit more accurate and quick.
swype works a tad bit better, but the word selection box in shapewriter is far superior. shapewriter is an excellent free option. had i not signed up for the beta on swype, i'd be happily shapewriting today.

AFAIK, the official beta offer from Swype is closed. The leaked Swype app is not the same as the official beta version. I got in on the official beta invite and absolutely love Swype. There are a few things that need to be tweaked, such as defaulting to "too" instead of "to" and "thee" instead of "the". But the beta is very close to perfect IMO.
what is all the hype about? i'm not saying that in a condescending manner, i actually just uploaded it to my phone. but i was just wondering, what does this kb do that others don't?

I tried Shapewriter and SlideIt before I tried Swype. For me, Swype is easier, faster, and gives me the right words at least 75% of the time, without having to choose from the popup list.
Swype works really nice on 2.1. It can be picky when you are writing short words or certain words. I tend to trust it to much and it will send the wrong words. I have a heck of a time trying to get it to type "don't". It keeps coming up as "sony" or "donut".
I was lucky enough to be a beta tester for swype and love it. It's not the be all end all of keyboards though. I use it in conjunction with better keyboard. I would post the official link to the beta version but I can only download it a certain number of times or will get locked out. HOWEVER, check out this site, I saw it on here. I'm not sure if it's the same as the beta or not but it's worth a try and it's free to download. Btw, I have stock 1.5 on my Sprint Hero so you don't need 2.1 to use swype.
Swype is a great keyboard, I had tried using Shapewriter before and it just didn't do it for me. I'm always amazed at how accurate Swype is, except for a few tricky words its right almost always.
