An Alarming Trend...

Well, had Google and the rest kept with it, we might have seen a screen tech much like those in Iron Man. With it all being holo (irony) and physical manipulation ala Stark picking up a file and literally tossing it into the recycle bin. Augmented reality. But no, we are devolving back to stylii and CGA graphics. Glass is a kind of augmented reality unfortunately Google killed the best feature by removing any type of support for apps that utilized facial recognition in favor of their severely limited card crap. So all you get are basic HUDs like weather or SMS. Heck my Pontiac Built in 1992 could display speed that way. Backwards!

Well technically Google Glass is considered a large step towards augmented reality. Give it some time we'll get there. :)

Now maybe this will be of some interest to you?

That's android market. Only for devices running 2.3 or below. Android 4.x doesn't support the old market, and 4.x Jelly Bean loses the market updater apk so it seems to be no way to stop Google from forcing the crap new play store down my throat.

Sadly all Glass looks to be capable of is displaying Google Now cards. Google has already officially banned any facial recognition apps that would truly release its potential. As for tech evolution so long as everyone from Google to Microsoft is going back to kiddy interfaces and hiding or even removing features for power users (supposedly on the premise of protecting us from ourselves by preventing us from screwing up our devices) then there is truly no need for fancy screens or advanced ui. Apparently, humans just 'aren't ready for it yet'

Augmented reality most likely will never be on Handheld devices.

Most expect it to be widley used in everyday life in about 10 years. Some examples of how it is used now:

Top Ten Augmented Reality Devices

Note: there are 'augmented reality apps' but I mean something much bigger than that.

Not true. Microsoft and Google have alternate ways for power users, it's just not as easy to get into since most people do not know what they are doing, which keeps them from practically destroying their device.

Common scenario::
I'll be helping my grandma fix her computer

Grandma: Oh wait I clicked this before... *reaches over my shoulder and clicks corrupting a file*
Me: wtf?! No!
Grandma: Oh god what did you do now??

Trust me it's a good thing most of the time.

You must ease the uneducated into it first.

Ever seen someone tricked into entering the forkbomb command in their command line/terminal? Not pretty.

To be fair, my grandmother knows her way around Linux better than I do. My mom of course is the type that Windows 8 is geared for, but it scares me the way UIs are being dumbed down to CGA looking garbage with a Fisher-Price interface. I mean where do you progress from that? Scary. So far the entire trend among many OSs including Linux (specifically Ubuntu) is towards flat design and all of it looks like garbage. Dark reminders of DesqView and Windows 1.0 just like stylii are throwbacks to Windows CE and Apple Newtons. We were moving forward but now we're moving backwards. CGA UIs aren't even remotely 'modern' so it is insulting that they refer to it as 'modern'. Perhaps 'modern' in this case is meant to be interpreted the same as 'modern art' which also looks like crap.

Flat ui had a purpose but people have long since moved on. Not everyone who uses a smartphone or laptop is an idiot. So I shouldn't feel like I have to use an interface designed for idiots. I can only hope that it's a simple fad that would die off in a year or two, but then I had the same hope that deer hunting would be a simple fad but now here everyone does it. *sigh*

Let's assume for the moment the flat design sticks, like the latter fad above. Very soon, displays are made to take advantage of the design. Gone are high resolution, high PPI, billions-of-colors tech because flat-ui only needs 16 colors and low resolution. People obviously prefer the stylus so no point in improving capacitive screen tech, just bring back resistive screens and possibly a slider keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard.

Do you have any clue as to the kind of privacy issues that would arise from facial recognition technology being available to anyone who can read API documentation?

This is real life we are talking about. Not some movie or tv show.

dorks with too much money to spend have no need for facial recognition software.

EDIT: and dude, really? deer hunting has existed since people found deer. it aint going anywhere.

I do agree the new pastel card look is beat tho.

Like I said retro is in. It looks pretty retro so people want to have it. Lol

Yes it's lame as heck. But don't fret just sit back and lol at the tools. :D

Did any of those links work? Or are you just going to give up on it for now?

That is technically true. Facial recognition is considered the most flawed when it comes to security.

Bring on the retinal and other biometrics security readers for Smart devices. :D

But Google Now isn't a privacy concern for people? Heck the purpose of this thread even, losing removable storage capabilities in favor of all your personal data being stored in the cloud I mean Matrix isn't s concern either, I gather?

I don't know anything about Google Now since my phone doesn't have it. Facial recognition is considered a privacy concern because if taken in a darkened area it either
1. Doesn't work at all

2. Thinks it is you and will let some dip into your phone

Lol, to me, science fiction is just that.. fiction. Not a prophesy

Not prophesy but idea engaging.

There is a short story that my ex girlfriend loved, it was written in 1950s and was about a smart house in a loop after a nuclear blast. And another one about a virtual reality room (similar to holodeck) written in 1949.

I never used google now, and wont, but people who use it dont care I guess.

i never put anything on the cloud cuz why would I want to have to upload all my music just to redownload it when I want to listen to it. I dumped google music off my devices, use third party players and filled up several 16GB sdcards. I uncheck "verify my apps", delete fb app etc etc.

life isnt a sci-fi movie, and not everyone wants to be part of peoples sci-fi fantasy. I think google glass is the dumbest thing I ever heard of.

specifically regarding privacy concerns, I dont think people should be walking around with terminator style constant video cameras assesing everything and everyone. Especially with many states going to facial recog with DLs, the ease which someone could hack into that is rediculous. Dudes can hack into pacemakers, does anyone really think having every persons DMV history, and then by extension access to all the personal data just by passing them on the street isn't far behind?

there are wolves and there are sheep.

Of course. But people can already do this anyway.

Just not with glasses. There's not much of a difference. Like the majority of people would know how to hack it.

I've never seen the point in doing that at all. Upload all my MP3s to Google, travel to a different country and then find I can't download my MP3s due to licensing restrictions, even though it's my songs I've uploaded. Just put them on an SD card, much easier and always available. :thumb:

BTW, let the stylii thing go already. The Note is just one product among many...it's a niche item. They're not using the stylii because it's a necessity to use Android, they're using it because it's a personal preference. I had a palm pilot, and though I've only used the Note once in Best Buy, there is a vast difference between the two.

I agree with this, I would rather save my data bandwidth anyway:D

I love sci-fi books from the early part of the 20th century, One of the best (IMO) was Robert Heinlein.

Lasers, Rockets, Computerized cars, among other things thought up and later come into use.:D
