facebook app: am I missing something?

I'm not a huge Facebook user, but I do use the personal Message function occasionally. I cant find it on the Android app.
I'll get a notification on the slide-down bar "You have three Facebook messages", and when I click on it, it takes me to the Facebook site on the browser. But if I open the Facebook app, I cant find it.
As I said, Im not a huge user (I'm really not all that inerested in being aware of every brain fart that every friend or acquaintance has), but I would assume that the app would allow you to read and send messages.
Am I missing something?

You can't uninstall it without rooting the phone. This comes installed by default when you buy the Eris from Verizon.

Yes, the app sucks--don't use it.

Yes, if you enable Facebook sync through the Social Networks menu on your Eris, you'll get notifications but can't see your new Messages, it's just a blank page that loads.

If you go to Facebook.com, you will be default redirected to the Facebook Touch site, which was designed for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Works awesome on Android and is your best way to use Facebook, whether you're a frequent user or just occasional.

I prefer the mobile version to the touch version.
The live feed doesn't seem to work right with the touch version.
It doesn't show me a lot of recent activity. Maybe it's just a news feed as opposed to live feed? Dunno.

Facebook for Android is pre-installed? I'm pretty sure I've uninstalled it before. You must be thinking of Facebook for HTC.

I prefer the app to the touch site because of the live feed issue.

Also, I saw somewhere that a dev was saying they can't have the messages function because Facebook won't allow anyone to use the API.

Other than not being able to read messages (it really isn't a huge hassle to use the browser...) I think the Facebook app is great. It does what I need and works well.

I just realized how much I never use the Facebook app. It has nothing that the mobile version doesn't. Why can't I uninstall it? Things like this make me wish I had rooted...

You can uninstall the Facebook for Android app, but you cannot remove the Facebook HTC Sync - you could just turn the sync function off.

Sorry but the app is awful and broken.
The most annoying thing for me is tapping pictures in your news feed routes to m.Facebook.com, instead of the built in image viewer, which only us accessible if you view the friends profile directly.
Also, can't accept or deny friend requests.
Also can't publish pictures to others walls, only your own.

The iPhone Facebook app is worlds beyond, I hope someday our app catches up.

It doesn't push any notifications (wall posts, comments, etc..).

If you want an actual notification in your notification bar, then no it doesn't do that. But who really would want that? That would be a little overboard IMO.

I'm perfectly satisfied with just checking the Notifications part of the app to see any recent activity connected to me. Wall posts, status r photo comments, likes, etc. And I also get an email instantly if I have a private message that will link directly to the browser, and that works for me.

All in all, yes the app could be better. But like I said, I've heard that there are some sort of API restrictions that the devs have to work around.
