Moto Droid Maxx Pre-Release Thread

I stopped by my local VZW corporate store on my way home from work today. They had the Maxx, Ultra (Red back) and Ultra (Black back) on display. First things first, the Ultra is UNCOMFORTABLE in hand. It's too thin. The Maxx feels and looks incredible.

I tested it opening webpages (phonedog and phandroid) vs. my Gnex. It loaded webpages 2-3 seconds faster than my Gnex.

I also took a photo with my Gnex and the Maxx for comparison's sake. It's a quick shot but it gives a little context. I also took photos of the apps pre-installed in the app drawer.

This is taken with my Genx:

This was taken with the Moto Maxx

Here are the apps included in the app drawer:

Thanks for the images and info. My Maxx is being delivered tomorrow and it is good to hear positive reviews. I thought the Ultra might be a little thin to be comfortable in the hand and I wanted the 32 Gb memory in the Maxx.:D

I think I'll be picking this phone up tomorrow, I just really wish that there were some more reviews of it available. I jumped into my Droid X blind though, and that was really a fantastic device. Looking forward to getting back on a Motorola device after using my Galaxy Nexus.

I honestly don't think I will regret this phone regardless of what comes out over the next 6 months, that is unless it becomes a lemon for some reason.

If it weren't for battery and signal strength (and broken port) my Gnex would be fine. I have the extended battery and I usually have at least ONE of the original batteries with me when I'm going to be away from a charger (usually two others).

I didn't so a side by side comparison of the S4 with this phone, but honestly, I don't need to. The S4 seems like it's going to be more of the same that I currently have (with a few more bells and whistles minus the pure Google experience).

The only way I can see this phone coming back in the 14 day trial period is if they lied about 48 hours battery life. If it's within 36 hours and it's as peppy as it seems to be, I'm going to be one happy camper.:)

I also asked about pricing because I know some had heard that it would cost $350 with a $50 mail in rebate. At my store (because I can't speak for everyone) I was told that it will be $299.99 and that there is a $349.99 bundle that they can sell me but the phone itself is $299.99.

CBF, you made my night. I was SERIOUSLY freaked out by this. $299 is pushing my financial limit right now.... that extra $50 would have been a hard thing to swallow.

I am psyched beyond words.

Good point. The battery life on the GNex is a huge problem for me and probably one of the big reasons for me going to the Maxx. I have terrible reception at work and in class and my GNex would be crying for mercy after 4-5 hours, even with an extended battery.

You know, I think it's kind of sad. Here we are on release day, and not ONE review by any of the major tech websites. I just checked Engadget, TheVerge, Droid-Life, Droiddog. Nothing. All have had the Moto X review up for a week now, and it's still three days from release. And, it's a lesser phone than the Maxx.

I find that curious.

I agree, it's almost if VZ made a deal to get their phones by allowing Moogle to push the Moto X more. From what I see the Moto X needs all the pushing it can get to compete with the Maxx. I'll know today. :D

Well aside from the pushy sales chicks that wouldn't take no for an answer, I'm a VERY happy Droid Maxx owner!! OMG it was worth the wait. The screen. I was worried about the screen. OMG it is gorgeous. Crisp and bright.

I don't think I've stopped smiling since I left the VZW store.

Edit: Ugh. Slight disappointment. The Droid Command Center widget does not work on Nova Launcher.

Congrats. You'll have to see how that 48 hour battery life claim holds up ;)

The more I read, the more excited I am. :) Wife's upgrade is on the 23rd, so I only have to wait three more days (it's funny how we've been using each other's upgrades for years now, as it seems that's when we're ready to upgrade). And, Verizon said they'd give me $70 for my Razr Maxx, which I think is an incredibly good price. VZ's website still says the 27th so that's only one week away. Hopefully someone will have released a root method by then.

@Cincy, thanks for posting the bumper case. I like that idea to protect the phone but still show off the back.

I will get more than 48 hours... I get two days still from my Razr Maxx and that phone is 2 years old. I'm not a heavy user so I expect my Droid Maxx to hold up longer.

I'm also excited to hear the positive reviews of the screen. I'm in the same boat as others; I'm sure anything looks great compared to my Razr Maxx lol.

Finally, yes, I find the lack of reviews strange too. DL posted the Moto X review and an unboxing of the Ultra but no review yet. Weird. I wonder why?

congrats on your phone! here's a review though: DROID Ultra Review - SlashGear

and it's about 45 mins before the stores open on the 20th in my time zone - so it's up before release for me.

Just swung by the local Verizon store at lunchtime to check out the Maxx. Very impressed. As others have noted, the screen is flipping gorgeous. Bright colors and deep, inky blacks. Plenty of detail, the 720p thing officially doesn't matter to me at this point. To me it looks a lot better than the 1080p screen on my wife's GS4. I tried the "wrist twist" thing to activate the camera and was able to get it working on my third try. Neat, but I'm not sure I'd use it.

Overall, I'm very impressed and would be happy to own a Maxx, but I have to hold a Moto X in my hand before I make my final decision. I'll probably hit an AT&T store this weekend so I can do that.

I'll tell you what. From 10:00 to now (3 hours) it has been on almost continuously and I've gone down about 15%. That with the screen at max. My GNex would have been dead twice over LOL.

Good to hear, thank you;. Where is that d^^^n Fed Ex truck? :D

Let us know when you get it!! I hope you like it as much as I do.

I'm also excited to hear the positive reviews of the screen.

I thought the screen on my GNex was spectacular. This is better, by a good margin. Anybody who says, "Only 720p" is looking at it with a magnifying glass.

congrats on your phone!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

5" true RGB at 720p is out of sight.

I'm distressed! I went at noon today and picked up my new Maxx. I switched my upgrade to my son's line so that I wouldn't lose my unlimited data. As I go to switch the sim cards, obviously the Maxx uses a mini with NFC and my Gnex does not. I asked for a new sim card the CSR tried to activate a mini WITHOUT NFC. Obviously that does not work. After him going in the back for 15 minutes he comes out and tells me that the mini NFC sim is so new that they don't have any in store, but if I wait 7-10 days they will LIKELY have them in store OR I could call Verizon myself and have one delivered in a couple of days.

A COUPLE OF DAYS!!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! You mean to tell me that my 16 year old son that breaks a phone every month (exaggeration) will have his grimy hands on my phone until Thrusday because they don't have a sim in the store for me?!?!

And that is exactly where I am now. Thursday, my sim will come and I will begin using the Maxx. :(

Oh no CBF! That's awful. I'm sorry to hear that.

Yeah, it sucks eggs. :( I've called every Verizon Wireless Corporate Store in Cincinnati asking for the micro sim with NFC, all of them, as if it were scripted say, "I'm sorry but that sim is too new." "We expect to have them in in 7-10 days, or you can call Verizon Wireless and have one shipped to you in a few days".

I'm serious, it's kind of creepy how every CSR that I've spoken to has repeated that same response to me.

If it's any consolation, and it's not, I did receive my email letting me know that my sim has shipped from Verizon Wireless and it will arrive by Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. via FedEx.

I can go home, hold it, play with it, but not fully get to use it and set it up because it will be in my son's hands for two days.
