Help Your opinion: when we get 2.1, will the upgrade be like last time?

When we finally get 2.1, will the upgrade be like last time? Early adopters go to the Sprint store and later the upgrade is rolled out to everyone else as an over the air download? Or will we be able to avoid the store and just grab it when it is released? Your opinion?

I'll file this under opinion since there is not one inkling of confirmation from anyone except the janitor's brother's sister-in-laws's cousin that cleans the building next to the local Sprint Repair Center here, but...

May 14th - Repair Center update only - May 21st OTW update available (with SDX and everyone else ripping it out and posting it online by the 15th for download...)

I doubt that we will see an OTA for something this major - although crazier things have been done. You are going to have thousands of people that have completely different phones after this update so going in-store only makes sense.

As far as Rumorsville continues: The Hero update was to 'blame' for the delay in the Moment's launch. Apparently, Sprint has had the update ready for the Moment for about a week now, but due to the issues with the Hero's update, they did not launch. The Hero was 'due' on/around April 9th with the Moment to follow in about 2 weeks. There was a major issue with the Hero that has delayed it until <European update in June?> who knows when, but it's not looking good for early May...

Of course, Sprint still has to release a date, but they have told their customer service agents to commit to "Early May" as a time to update to 2.1.

Probably do it yourself download like CL14. Who cares really, SDX will tear it apart and make it better anyways. I don't really care anymore since rooted DD10 is great already.

The reason there was the step-back-in-time return to the repair center cl14 upgrade was that Samsung didn't have the over the web tools for a user upgrade available. That was pitiful and should be an embarrassment to Samsung, fortunately the tools do exist now. Maybe, if Samsung were to put more than the janitor and a random passer by on the Moment development team, they'd even be up to a modern OTA upgrade by now? As it is, we'll suffice with the OTW update available. The only people who will need to take their phones in for upgrade are those who probably shouldn't own this phone or a even a computer.

@pastafarian - GREAT POINT! Suppose we could see a rollout OTA, but I'm not expecting it. Too many people got Moment's and Hero's because it didn't cost them more money on their plan. They just aren't technical enough to understand why the heck my phone reset overnight and I lost all my data... If they have to go to a store, it can be explained before they do it...

Just my thoughts - please don't beat me... lol

Considering the size of the download I sincerely doubt you'll see OTA updates of Android. It would be a ridiculously massive load on the network to have everyone having it done that way.

That excuse has been trotted out by Sprint already, but it's not valid. They already do OTA for the WebOS devices and the file sizes are in the 130mb range, same as Android. I don't know the exact numbers, but I'm sure there aren't substantially more Hero's and Moments then Pre's and Pixi's. Since there are already Android devices doing OTA (Droid), it would seem the most valid reason for the Moment not doing OTA is that Samsung hasn't developed that capability yet. Evidenced by the c14 update being rolled out via repair center install because Samsung didn't have a OTW tool ready....even though virtually all smartphones (other than the Moment) have been OTW updated for the last 6-7 years.

I agree. It will go just like the cl14 update but without the early upgrades in store. I bet they got tired of buying phones during that.

ok so ota is out of the question for the moment.that is due to samsung and not sprint.the way your going to get the official update and yes i will check it out 4 about 2 days (until the real pros get it at sdx and perfect it) is going to be first by going to a service center,then after they feel they did enough of the updates that their servers will not be bogged down they will release it for download. i had a pre and when we were waiting for the 1.4 update they released it in spotty patches all over as not to overload the servers not all at once i had the update at like midnight but a couple friends of my on the pre forums didn't get it until like 3 or 4 am.

All of the service centers updating phones 24 hours a day for a week isn't going to get hit as many times as the server will in the first 5 minutes. To think they'd roll it out in the service centers to lighten the load on the servers doesn't make much sense. Bandwidth is cheap and they have plenty of it...

I agree with the above. They only did it like that last time because the tool wasn't ready for home use.
