What do you mean by "messed up with navigation"? Just curious. Also, does your Volt have a Chevy MyLink Radio as my Spark does? If so, get the software updated and buy the $50 Bringo app to put your phone's navigation on the radio's LCD screen. I really need to get off my butt and get the software update. Sucks that you have to go to the dealership to do so.

The old version of maps on the Bionic functioned much more like an actual navigation device, making it easy to use. The new maps' is not as easy to use and also doesn't appear to have a way to go into a bird's eye view without setting a destination. There is no quick way to navigate to my contacts. Perhaps it works okay with google now, but on the bionic, it was a battery killer for me. Ultimately, I can use OnStar as it comes free with the Volt for three years, but there is a lot of value to me in being able to see when a street is coming up, even if I'm not navigating somewhere.

As for Bringo, sounds interesting, but it does not list the Volt as one of the cars it is compatible with.

Thanks MrBigFeathers. I've just looked at the iBolt line, and they show a lot of landscape-view phones. Has anyone tried it specifically on this phone and can verify which iBolt mount holds our Maxx the best? (Comments on Amazon don't address this phone, but do seem to complain about poor fit on other models.)

My buddy has the universal dock and has a Note 2. It is spring loaded I believe and adjusts to fit any phone. I didn't look super close but he opened the arms and put his Note in and the arms came together to hold the phone. It swivels so it works in portrait or landscape. It comes with connectors for Samsung or HTC to make the phone go into dock mode which wouldn't work for the new Moto phones unless they release a new cable or dock. But short of making the phone go into car mode it would work great with the Maxx. And if the Maxx will go into car mode anyway when it knows you are going fast enough to be driving that might not matter.

Might be worth a try, if not Amazon will let you return it. I would like to see if they release a new cable at least for the Motos or release a new dock with magnets in it for dock mode.

SO I can't say for sure since I don't have a Maxx yet but it held his Note 2 with a case fine and my Galaxy Nexus with a TPU case just fine.

It also has a suction mount that suctions to the dash not just a window. Which I really like as I hate having suction cups on my windshield.

Carrying my iPad tonight, I placed my Maxx on the screen. Suddenly my phone asked me if I wanted to confirm that I'm driving since I loaded my phone into a car dock. At first it made me pause, but then I remembered that my iPad has a magnet in it.

Cool feature, but not something I will likely use.

I wasn't actually convinced Motorola used magnets again. I haven't seen them do this since the Droid X. I thought they might have used NFC to trigger it like the Xperia phones. However, I put a magnet up to me desk dock and found there was indeed a magnet on the left side of the dock at about halfway up the phone. Like the Droid X, each pole of the magnet initiates a different dock mode. This also means people can add their own magnets to whatever docks they want and have it launch the car dock mode. It should be noted that if you disable the motorola car dock, the desktop dock displays instead. But the driving part of assist still becomes active. It is likely that if you install a third part car dock app that can launch itself if it detects its in a car dock, it will launch it instead.

1/4" POST WITH 1/4"-20 THREADED HOLE STST

Its a 9/16" ball which puts it at 0.5625 inches. Might work if it can clamp down, but its also made of rubber which can result in two possible problems.

I ordered a different ball adapter from Ram Mounts than what I posted that has a flange attached. It has 2 holes drilled and comes awfully close to the top and bottom holes on the Proclip mount face according to my measurement of the Proclip mount and a drawing of the Ram Mount I found on their site. Its about 0.088 inches off. That's probably too much to line up correctly, but its nothing a dremel can't fix. Looks like it may be delivered tomorrow so I'll report back about the ball size compatibility tomorrow evening.

As promised, I'm reporting back on the Ram Mount Ball:

RAM 2 7/16" X 1 5/16" BASE W BALL

I've attached photos. The first shows the Ram Mount ball is indeed slightly smaller. I tried attaching the dock to it, but it would not clamp down hard enough on it. I didn't try turning the lock nut all the way, but I went as far as I was comfortable. My solution was to take a small adhesive furniture pad (maybe 1/16" thick?) and cut it down. I tried using a whole piece, but it didn't feel like the ball was deep enough. With the cut down piece, it felt much better. Someone could try to find something that works a bit better, but this seems fine. The screw holes don't line up center to center, but the Ram mount holes are actually kind of wide so you can actually use use the screws that come with the Proclip ball here. I don't think the screws come with just the mount, so you may need to source some if you just order the clip. I recommend something with a wider head. The screws I used could potentially sink into the hole itself. Some thin washer might work too. I left mine as is as it felt tight enough. I just avoided trying to screw it down really hard. I placed it all back in the car and it appears to work fine. The real test will be during the drive to and from work but I don't anticipate any problems at this point. Hopefully this helps others that are looking to use the Griffin Car Dock with a Proclip Mount.

As an aside, this ball provides greater range of tilt than the Proclip ball. The Proclip ball has a wide base that limited how far you can tilt the mount on the ball. I can actually aim this one at me.

For anyone that cares, I just shot Proclip and email to see when they would have a custom mount available for the XT1080.

I'll keep you guys posted

I'd be much more interested in seeing a 15mm ball released by them. I sent that request last week and haven't heard anything yet.

I'll take this opportuity for an update as well. I'm not terribly thrilled with the previous solution I posted. I have a couple of drawer handles that have a 15mm ball on the end of it ordered. I'll update when I try it out. Its stainless steel and has the potential to get really hot, but it should be fine in my car as its darkly tinted and doesn't get too hot even on hot days.

We will have to look into making a holder for the Motorola Droid Maxx.

Due to an overwhelming request, worldwide, to develop all different kinds of holders, we must prioritize.

Once we will have a holder available for your device, we will notify you via email.

However, we do have a series of 6 ProClip Universal holders which will accommodate a number of devices with or without cases/skins/extended batteries on them:

--Pretty much what I expected

That's a bummer. Why would anyone care to use a universal dock when there is one specifically made for the phone. Hopefully the new doird phones and the moto x kind of take off. Since Griffin is making all their car docks, it would help push proclip towards at least making the 15mm ball adapter. I think that would be a great way for them to address all 4 of these phones reasonably without having to come up with three different solutions.

Thinking about ordering a kenu airframe instead...

It claims to fit up to a 4.8inch screen WITH a case. I imagine a naked Maxx should fit?

Looks nice

Is anyone able to get the phone to charge or play music through the USB cable? I have everything plugged in and the phone docked and it's not showing the USB connection at all (no charging, music plays out of the phone speakers, etc). This completely defeats the purpose of a car dock. Anyone else have better luck that me?

I went out and played with the car dock at lunch and was able to get it to start charging by pushing in the sides. However, even with the combined USB/audio cable from Motorola, I'm not getting any audio. Looks like I'll need to plug in the 3.5mm cable each time I dock it. Anyone else have a different experience?

There are only two wires going from the input to the output USB connecting inside the dock. With no data lines, no audio out from USB is possible through the dock.

Shoot, wonder why they took a step backwards. That was one of the reasons I've loved Moto phones for the past few years is the ability to just dock it in the car and not need to connect the audio cable each time.

Are there any third party docks that output audio on the USB port?

I never really thought about that much since I connect via Bluetooth. You might try plugging the cable into the phone directly and see if it works. I don't know if there is any additional circuitry in the older docks that accommodate this. If it does work, all you need is to find a dock that have working data pins. The other option is to try and add them yourself. It's possible that all you have to do with the Griffin dock is to solder the wires in. It's too bad this didn't come up before last night. I had my dock open and could have tried to take a closer look at this aspect.

If I'm not mistaken, they have it isolated to the audio jack because it is capable of sensing the headphones being plugged in, and then it automatically cancels the phone speakers while the cord is plugged in.

Yeah, in the past docks (Droid X through the Droid Razr Maxx HD), you just docked it and it routed all audio through the USB cable and through your speakers. The audio port is autosensing, so it does route everything to the cable once I plug it in, but it's an extra step that I've gotten used to not doing. I hate when companies go backwards.

I also tried plugging the cable directly into the phone, but that doesn't even charge. Which makes sense because the cable actually has a picture of a phone with a big X over it and then shows a dock with a circle around it. Must be wired for docks only somehow.

I still have all my bionic stuff still out so o tried it last night as well. Did not work with just the split audio USB cable. Also tried plugging it into the bionic dock with the same cable. Still did not work. Just to make sure, I plugged in my bionic to the dock and I got output through the USB, but only on the left channel. I should have two more docks and one more cable somewhere to try. But I just moved in to my current home a month ago, so hopefully I can find it easily. It may still be in a box somewhere.

So after a few days with this set up, I found it a bit flimsy trying to get it to not swivel and it did feel slightly rubbery on the mount as well. I found a 15 mm drawer knob online:

Siro Designs 44-151 Fine Brushed Stainless Steel Knob

I received them today (I ordered 2 since shipping was more than the knobs). I hacked up the Proclip extension piece I have as I ended up not liking it and mounted this ball in place. Its ever so slightly larger than the OE ball, but it feels much more solid and much harder to swivel with the nut tightened. The ball is a hair larger than the Griffin ball, so its a bit snug and the nut on the back is harder to thread on initially. Hopefully this will be the end of it.

I'm glad I ordered the second ball too. My GF's Griffin mount for her Mini keeps falling off the dash (There isn't a very flat spot near the location we want it in; with our Bionics, I had a different bottom half, but that used the 17mm ball and that is not easily replaceable). The proclip mount for her car is in a terrible location so I may be fabricating my own mount. I should be able to use this ball for that as well.
