Help How to set MY LOCATION as Home or Work?

In google maps, I am trying to tell it that where I am standing now is MY HOME location but when I click edit Home location it only allows me to manually input an address and there is no option to select my current location is work or home

further more, let's say I drop off a friend somewhere, then I want to name that location John's Place for example, how do you do that?

That's one of the reasons I still use WAZE. It's simply let to drop pin by holding finder on the map, but also save it under whatever name you want.

With google maps, it's possible but it takes too many steps.
First you navigate to the place of interest. Star it / Save it.

Then you have to go to Bookmarks using browser, https://www.google.com/bookmarks/

There, you can press little EDIT link, next to your saved location, and rename it to whatever you want.

The point being, the OP wants to be able to set this from his CURRENT LOCATION within the Maps application.

I don't see a way of doing this in Maps.
The closest thing I can find is to tap on the nearest smart icon to your location and press the Star button to save, or to enter the address manually and then save it

you're right, the guy above you missed the whole point.

if I enter the address manually its not as precise as being on the exact same spot of MY LOCATION.

I am shocked that Google Maps, the best mobile navigation I've yet to see, doesn't have such a simple an easy way to mark a particular address and name it something descriptive or choose a specific location as Home or Work.

When I first bought my phone and I was going from home to work daily, I never enter neither a HOME nor a work location, but every day in the notifications, in the morning, I see a notification saying : 30 mins to work or when Im at work at around the time I will leave, it says 30 mins to home as if it knew that this is my daily habit and knew where my home location was!!! very strange

yet, if I am somewhere and want to go to HOME there is no HOME location define! FFS

Either you haven't seen very many navigation apps or our view of what constitutes "best" is very different.

I have used TomTom on a friend's S3 and Sygic Aura on my own S4 and both are a lot better than Google Maps for road navigation. I use Maverick Pro for off-road navigation (on foot in my case but it would work just as well on an MTB) in conjunction with the excellent Ordnance Survey maps. Maverick is also a lot better than Google Maps.

Google Maps is good, but I think it has some way to go on the navigation functionality so far.

Similar for a Garmin Nuvi... tap Where am I? and it shows your exact GPS location. You can save that location and call it whatever you want. It wouldn't be a huge leap for Google to provide a similar functionality for Maps.

Sorry, but the Garmin Nuvi is a stand alone GPS unit, not an app.

I wish we could take all the good points from Maps, Waze, Trapster and Nuvi and make one very good navigational app.

Why don't you try WAZE ?
Waze is probably by far the best navigation app for Android and iOS, and it's free.

Secondly, it's a community GPS, where people report real time, police blocks,
speed traps, accidents.. etc..

I threw away Garmin, because it worked like shit in Malaysia. Lots of roads out of date, lead me multiple times to dead ends...

I'll try it, although I seriously doubt that it works in Dubai because when I tried it 2 years ago on my BlackBerry it seemed like i was driving in the middle of a desert the maps were not supported in Dubai

I live in Malaysia, where most of the maps are showing me driving in a rice fields. Nothing but green.
But Waze has the smallest roads I have never heard of. And seriously, take me to the most remote places without problem.

And, if you keep Waze turned ON while driving, you "pave", help improve and develop map's accuracy. You can as well, report in real time police blocks, accidents, and severity of traffic to other users. I was in Dubai for a while, living two roads across from Jumeirah, but back then I had a Garmin in my car. Which wasn't working too well.

Anyway, do give Waze a try, and let me know how does it work for you.

I just d/l Waze to give it a try. Some of the complaints I see focus around its interaction with Facebook... on which I'm not active. Also, there is mention of lots of ads that pop up, etc. Do you find these factors to be an issue?

That's interesting. I open an account and I log in using my own credentials. Never utilize Facebook. I get ads very seldom, and only when I'm stationary, like stuck in traffic. The moment I drive, the ads go away. Most of the time it only display warnings, like heavy traffic, police and accidents.
Kuala Lumpur is one of those very fast developing cities. Roads get block and redirected over night. Waze is the only app that is instantly up to date.

I tried waze for the first time driving home from work. It seems very good in terms of UI and features etc. But twice in the space of only 10 miles it tried to direct me onto non-existent roads, so it's a thumbs down from me. I value accuracy and reliability far higher.

Every GPS I've ever used has sent me down wrong paths. Whether it's a stand-alone device or an app on a phone, tablet or laptop, they've all failed me at one time or another. I like to think of them as a guide, not the final resolution. If it gets me close I can usually manage from there.
