Accessories High speed Class-6 microSD card recommended.

Even if there isn't a big difference right now you never know what will happen down the road. If you already have a card you are happy with then there's no reason to go buy another, but if you need more space then why not just spend a couple extra bucks to get something with a higher threshold for speed? I know on the eris the class 6 seemed to make a difference in various apps that accessed the sd card, but i don't have any hard data to back that up. Just mainly users who felt the upgrade made a difference, but then again they just spent money so they were expecting some sort of improvement. All i know is with a much faster processor if any phone were to take advantage of the increased data read and write speed it would be the incredible.

Stupid question I guess....

But, I had an Eris, and I'm assuming that the 8GB card that came with it was only a Class 2, but I don't know for sure because I never looked at it. I had problem with my music skipping on it. From this forum, I learned that perhaps I should buy a better pair of headphones that had a gold plated jack. I bought a pair of Skullcandy's, but most of my music still skipped at the beginning of each song but it was not as bad with my old $5 buds.

Could this have been caused because it was only a Class 2 card??

I don't have the phone, returned it last Sunday, so I could pre-order the Incredible! But, I was wondering just the same.

I did just order a Class 6 8GB card last night on Amazon for my DI.

Somebody's been giving questionable advice... Headphones won't cause a song to skip. They only play what comes out of the device.

That's a lot more likely. It shouldn't happen, but it certainly could due to poorly designed software not giving enough time for the song to buffer before playing it.

Extremely, extremely unlikely. Class 2 means that the card is rated to transfer at least 2 megabytes per second. Since a typical MP3 file is about 5 megabytes and the song lasts a few minutes, the rating is sufficient by an order of magnitude or so.

its almost always faster to take the card out of the device and plug it directly into your computer to fill up the card.

Once you do that, the class 6 card will take way way waaaaaaay shorter time to fill up, verses the class 2 cards.

And if you bought a 16gb card and had to fill it up. You will be soooooo glad you got the faster one. 16gb class 2 cards make you want to pull your hair out.

it will take about 9 min to transfer 1gb to a class 2 card.

It will take about 1.9 min to transfer 1gb to a class 6 card.

I think the problem with the eris was 2 fold, the os and blue tooth. I switched from blue tooth headphones to a wired set and that seemed to help, i then also rooted it to the 2.1 os and the problem was gone completely. I don't know if i could have gone back to the blue tooth headphones or not, but i think other users were stating they were experiencing the skipping no matter which version of os they had when connected via blue tooth.

this is probably the 3rd or 4th thread i've had to post this in. misinformation irritates me slightly so i'll post it again. CLASS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH READ SPEEDS, ONLY WRITE SPEEDS. and even then, its not that big of a difference since it only defines the MINIMUM write speed, which means even a class 2 can go as fast as a class 6 at times. so unless youre loading gBs of data at a time onto the card on a regular basis, you dont need anything bigger than a 2. playing music from the card has nothing to do with what class it is. or playing apps, or looking through photos, or ANYTHING OTHER THAN PUTTING LARGE FILES ONTO THE CARD.

Yes, MP3 player lags slightly when gathering lists due to slower access times of the class-2 SD card.

that would have to do with the processor's ability to access the card fast enough and load the data onto the phone. sd cards are a form of "solid state drives", meaning they dont have a disk it reads the information off of inside, its all electronically there in the card itself.

in this situation the actually quality of the card would come into play, such as buying a low-end brand that sells for cheap. kingston, sandisk, sony and a couple other companies are the reputable ones that make great products, so buy from them.

Very interesting, and thanks I had glossed over that it is write only speeds.

I wonder why they don't rate the read speeds with a class rating?

I the case of a photographer, class rating would be important, but in the case of any time of read operation (loading apps etc), how can we assess speed?

just posted something that details that a little right before your post. the "solid state drives" rely more on how fast the equipment its in can read it. thats why read speeds on flash drives or sd cards cant be rated. since the incredible has a 1 ghz processor, it should be able to load off the card extremely fast.

Seriously though...before I got the Skullcandy's with the gold-plated jack, the skipping was so bad, I couldn't even listen to it. It was like the fast-forward button was constantly being pushed. I read on the Eris forum about switching buds. After the switch, the songs only skipped for a couple of seconds in the beginning. I even bought a holster because I was just keeping the phone in my pocket while gardening. Old headphones still skipped even in the holster, Skullcandy's only skipped during first few seconds of each song. Luckily, I only payed $5 for the Skulls because my hubby had a BB reward certificate that was expiring, so he gave it too me! And I like the way the fit in my ears better than my cheap Sony's. And, I got rid of my Eris...and my order for the DI has been processed, so my new phone is on it's way!!! :p So I guess it doesn't matter any more anyway! LOL

A friend I work with has an Eris. He updated his phone to 2.1v1 when he took the phone out of the box. He said his music NEVER skipped at all. Guess there will be no easy explanation!

To me, write speed is valuable not simply because of transferring large files to the card, such as movies, but also taking photos and videos. I can't stand waiting for the photo to be 'written' to the card when I am ready to take the next photo. So class 6 for me.

There are advantages even after the card is in the phone, imo.

You can get 16gb class 6 micro sdhc for ~$60, iirc.
