Root [Sprint] How do I wipe update reroot and get back to wherei am now?

How do I do this so that I don't have to go through all the BS of setting up my phone again.


Downloading all my apps, creating all my shortcuts, all the stuff you do when you get a new phone. I just did it a few days ago and I'm not too excited about starting over. Any suggestions?

This is why I said when you were planning to buy the S4, "skip the setup and to install the updates first". I was trying to prevent you from ending up in this situation. If you haven't unrooted yet, install Titanium Backup and start backing up apps you downloaded. There are XML options for backing up your Call Log and SMS/MMS. However you will have to set up your shortcuts and phone settings again.

Yeah in hindsight everything you said is becoming more clear. This isn't my first Rodeo but it's been a LOOOOOONG time since I setup my original EVO.

Well I already installed a recovery, TWRP, did a nandroid, factory reset and now I'm downloading SACS v6. I figure I can access the nandroid via USB and I took pics of the way I had the screen set up. I had titanium do a few backups on schedule the last few days. I assume I have some stuff there. Hope it's on the sd card and not just in the nandroid.

Also I was buying the phone at radio shack and they insisted on doing the activation in order to give me a discount. I figured the update would have been part of that.

Ah, no. Because of Sprint's setup, just about any retailer you buy it from (on contract) has to activate it before you leave. However, updates are not included.

On my phone, Titanium defaulted to the internal storage as a save location. I had to manually change the settings to the actual external SD so you may want to check and see if that stuff is still around.

Trial and error is how we all learn to mess with our phones. Even though I studied the forums and knew to install the updates and then factory reset for the most bug-free stock experience, I still forgot to do a nandroid before I made a few mods. So if it comes down to having to put the phone back to stock for another update, I will probably end up having to flash the stock MF9 ROM.

Well I just restored my nandroid.

I had some problem installing sacs so instead of getting into it tonight I posted a thread and I'll come back to try again tomorrow.

For future, just create a list of what you want restored when you wipe your phone.

For me, I narrowed down to this list

1. Shortcuts/icons/widgets - backup my Nova Prime launcher settings (have to re-add widgets)
2. Photos/videos - auto-backed up to google plus/dropbox/copy
3. Apps - I usually don't restore apps, and instead, just let them auto-download from the play store, and then, restore app data using titanium backup. Titanium backup can of course restore app+data as well.
4. App data - titanium backup restores it
5. Call logs/SMS - titanium backup can restore it

Add whatever else you need, and figure out how to backup/restore it. Then, just create a script to do all of this.

my girl has a cracked screen and Ive been too busy to sit down and save everything.. unroot.. wipe clean.. get new phone.. UPDATE then figure out how to re root again.. and then try and return her to where I am today.. feel like im fixin to climb mount everest n I'd rather put it off a day.

Well depending on what she has syncing, most of the data is already in the cloud.
- Samsung account will back up S-App data, SMS/MMS, and call logs
- Google will back up almost everything in it's ecosystem, contacts, pictures (optional), auto download previously installed apps (asked during initial setup), and restore some app data.
- DropBox's 50GB will take care of music, photos, and miscellaneous downloads that might be on the internal SD card.

qbking has a tutorial for unrooting and rooting the new one will take a matter of minutes. The trick is just remembering that when you get the new phone to skip setup and install all the updates then factory reset to avoid the software issues.

Ha. That's a good one. If I knew how to write a script I probably wouldn't still be putting off updating my device! Thanks for the help though.

Yeah well look at the date of my original post. I still haven't gotten around to updating! I just haven't been able to stay up late and do it... and I need the phone functioning beyond normal business hours.

If there's any concerns with the latest versions please let me know. I'm hoping to go through the process this week.

backup>nand> photos of my layout> unroot> update> factory reset> reroot > ROM> resetup things the way I like it.

Do I have this right?

Should I be avoiding MH8 for any reason?

When I first went to MF9 from rooted, stock rom MDL, I did my restore with TWRP Nandroid backup. It worked, but I ended up with odd issues. Apps closing, phone would reboot on its own, sometimes twice in a row, etc. After a half day of that, I went back to stock MDL, reinstalled MF9 stock, rooted and did the recovery via TiBu. Worked very well, even restored all my Nova Launcher settings. Very little additional setup after that. A couple of shortcuts, etc. Been rock steady for several weeks on MF9, stock rom, rooted.

I think the nandroid backup has some system level stuff that makes it unstable when restoring on a new firmware. It works great on the same level, though. I could be wrong about that too, but that is my impression.
