Root First compcache rom?

compcache - Project Hosting on Google Code

"This project creates RAM based block device (named ramzswap) which acts as swap disk. Pages swapped to this disk are compressed and stored in memory itself."

There's good arguments about why SWAP to sdcard is good and bad, and equal arguments as to why compcache is good and bad. Most are pretty obvious. In reality what works best depends alot on the specifics of the hardware.

Personally i've found compcache works alot better on embedded devices. (We develope alot of embedded devices at work :)

I expect the Hero one to be slow, but the light one should be fast. There's quite a few other customisations there. I'll keep you update how it goes.

I'm trying the Hero one first.

EDIT: This V4 recovery image is very very good, got alot of options. Looks like they now backup your google apps before the custom rom, so they dont get hassle from google about distributing their apps. Almost updated...

Check out the apps section of the first post:

UPDATE - BETA 2: SAMSUNG Galaxy ROMS: GALAXO & GALAXHERO - HDblog - Forum

The main widgets like social, people etc would require installing alot of the frameworks and would eat up alot of ram. Its possible but probbaly not worth it.

The keyboard isnt too bad either. I think its just a skinned normal one. I5 has improved the keyboard alot tho.

Does your recovery look like the one on the screenshot or do you have the mini recovery?

You're supposed to push the rectools files to your sdcard. I found this way is alot easier:

- Boot into whatever rom you have running, connect to the pc, and mount the internal storage (drop down the notification bar and click the 'usb connected').
- Copy the RECTOOLS.tar.gz file the root of the internal storage
- Copy the update.zip to the root of the internal storage
- switch off the phone, then boot into fastboot (call button + power button)
- flash the recovery image over

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Now the rest all from recovery:
- Reboot into recovery (volume down + call button + power)

- backup g.apps
- wipe/factory reset
- apply the update.zip
- restore g.apps
- reboot

all done

So i rebooted it about half an hour ago and just left it alone. I just got an SMS and went to reply and holy cow the keyboard is lightening fast and responsive. I flipped my finger as fast as i could over every key and it easily kept up.

I think i'm keeping it on this rom, just for that reason!

EDIT: Still a very small lag in the browser when typing into google (with google auto suggesting in the drop down). Very impressed so far tho

the wipe factory reset in recovery
is that a full drive clearout or does it do the same as a factory reset in settings?

I currently am one of the testers of this rom.

We were so happy to have something really stable that we released a little bit too quick. There are some malfunction with ext4dev plus minors things to correct before it can be really stable.

The rom features a lot of stuff but the more impressive one is a fully working wifi tether.

If you have any questions feel free to ask i'll try to answer as quick as i can !

The wipe in the recovery only erase /data and stuff from applications, it doesn't erase the internal 7go nor the /system.
But with the new rom it's not going to work cause to save space in /system all the /system/app are on the /data partition with a symlink.

If you use it with a standard samsung rom it acts exactly as the default wipe and brings back the phone to clear state before customisation.
