Help charging from USB

Im having problems charging the X10 through USB port on PC.

The phone charged OK through my Win7 netbook but fails to charge on works XP PC.
I cant install the drivers due to permissions. When I plug into the USB port the phone reports charging but the power level keeps going down.

Any ideas whats going on?

From my understanding, Windows will only supply full power to a port if it knows what's connected there needs it. If you can't install the drivers on your XP system, it likely is providing only a small amount of power to the port. The X10 sees power coming and, and reports that it's charging, but in reality it's still using more power than is being supplied to it.

At least that was what was explained to me when I had similar issues with my old iPAQ.

My X10 charges very slowly on USB. Took about 6-8 hours to do a full charge other day. Think it struggles getting enough charge to combat the rate it drains at from normal use

Agree. Charging from pc is really slow.

Thanks for the replies.
That would make sense as my Win7 netbook has the Sony software installed. Though charging off the netbook seemed to go fine but not sure if/how much slower than mains charger.

The works PC has the USB ports data channels locked down for security but the pwr is still live, but the trickle is resulting that the battery is draining at 1% evey20mins with the phone sitting idle with no wireless, BT or GPS enabled!!

Looks like will have to buy another mains power charger for work then.

Been trawling the forum for a charging related thread as I (and a colleague at work) have noticed that the X10 is very picky when it comes to charging.

I have bought a dedicated car charger(3rd party brand), it doesn't work, tried the supplied cable with 2 seprate USB/lighter plugs, doesn't work.

Even using an alternate mains/USB plug, all of the above which work fine on other equipment, it won't work.

Seems will only charge from the supplied mains unit or a PC.

What happened to USB being "standard" SE?

My (paranoid) belief is that SE have done something sneaky to force users to buy their own branded power units.

Anyone any similar experiences? Or thoughts on the matter.

I first came across this years ago with a Creative Zen mp3 player. It would only charge from a PC with the full drivers installed or official charger. I have a sneeky feeling SE have done the same :-\

Hi, There is a USB standard, problem is a lot if not most chargers don't follow it. My buddy had to open a car charger for me and short circuit something in there and now it works. Don't ask me the details because I'm not an electrical engineer, I do work at SE though and this was the explanation I got from the guys in the project.

I googled a little and apparently the Standard demands for an open circuit on the ID pin and a short circuit between the D+ and D- pins. This sounds familiar as to what my friend explained to me and adjusted in my car charger.

I have modded a USB cable for Car use and the data leads crossed works...
So a cheap usb ext cut and joined again and join the green and white together on one side ( the one from the phones usb side ) and bobs your uncle

Guys, noticed something about charging the phone, wondered if you have seen the same.

The only charger in my box was a USB cable that plugs into a "plug head" that plugs into the wall.

I plugged the X10 in last night to charge, around 12:00 am, when it still had about 15% charge. By 8:30 this morning it was only at 88% charge!!! Have you noticed the same? By the way, I had/have WiFi & Data turned off while charging, and used TaskPanel to kill all background tasks while it was charging.

I also noticed that you cannot actually charge the phone when it is off. I tried multiple times shutting the phone "off", and each time I plug it in, it turns itself on and boots up!

So I'm wondering if this is because of the type of charger, something wrong with the battery, or that's just the way the X10 charges?

If it's just how the X10 charges, imagine that someone whose phone is almost dead or dead plugs it in to charge before they go to bed, and when they are ready to leave for work in the morning it's still not fully charged!

Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson support centre.

We're sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing. Please find below a response to each of your queries.
Battery info - Once the battery is fully charged, this LED light will show and the handset will stop accepting charge. It is possible that this is only showing 96% due to an application running on the handset which is currently draining the battery.
Android Apps - Most of the applications available from the Android market should be sized to fit the handsets display and resolution, however as these apps are not manufactured by Sony Ericsson, we are unable to garentee this will all apps.
Updates - We can confirm that in the near future an update will be released which will upgrade the operating system in the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 handset to Android 2.1. We do not have a release date for this at the moment but it is currently under going development.
Sony app - Unfortunately we are unable to advise if an application for this will be released however as soon as one if available, it will be downloadable from the Android Market.
Media Go - We can confirm that it is not required that you remove the memory card from your handset to use the Media Go application on your PC. We would recommend following the below instructions on your handset in order to connect this to your PC.
1. Leave memory card in the handset and connect the USB cable.
2. Drag the notification bar down on the Main Screen of the handset.
3. Tap USB Connected.
4. Tap Mount USB.
This will then make your handset and the memory card recognised within Media go.
Videos - This depends on the size and resolution of the video itself. It will appear on the normal display as the standard size however tilting the handset will stretch the video.

I have problem with battery. And I have posted the reply i got from SE above.
Another problem I have is sometimes if i turn the phone off all the way. and take the battery out, then put it back in, sometimes it claims the battery is flat with only 2% left.
A reboot normal sorts it out.

A few times it has not got to 100% and I'm a bit feedup to be honest with it.
Never had shit like this from my iPhone 3gs...

Makes me laugh to as sony(e) claim that the Light turns on when fully charged. which it turns off. FFS don't even know there own phones....its starts as a dual color light till around 90%ish then green then off...

I also bought a cheap in car charger from Amazon and that will not charge the X10 or the wifes LG BL20. Have now got a Universal 3 in 1 car charger, with usb lead and mains plug, from Argos and this works a treat. So it looks as if the problem is down to the usb or lack of it.

Any chance you can look at the specs on the the car charger you have got that is working. I have a 2 and both do not work. It should be written on the charger its self, the voltage and the wattage would be so helpful.

I'm not sure that really helps that much. I tether my X10 via PdaNet to my laptop (which in turn is running on AC-power) every day at work. As such, the X10 should be getting constant charge through USB.

However, the charge seems pretty low, as over the course of the day of remaining on the tether, the X10 will slowly lose charge. At the very best (when I didn't use too much 3G) the X10 would gain a few percent battery over the 8 hours. This is in comparison to my old iPAQ 910c which would remain at 100% charge throughout the day while tethered, even if I was using it extensively.

I know the X10 will only charge once below 90% battery or so, but even sitting at 70% battery, the USB cable seems barely able to keep it at an even charge, and that's directly through off the port on my laptop.

I have had the same problem. My boyfriend bought a in car usb charger with 2 sockets for his iphone. It is not made by apple but his works perfect and my X10 will not work.

Also it will not charge through my friends laptop which is windows 7. I'v not had chance to try mine yet which is Vista

Works fine on Windows Vista not tryed a different operating system.

But Trickle charging from USB is kind of pointless anyway.

I have no problems charging mine in car, on desktop or on mains using usb cable. Windows 7 on desktop.

I was recently on a long-haul flight on Emirates and used the in seat USB port to charge the X10.
OMG I was shocked to see that it actually charged!!!
Looks like its a case of some chargers not sticking to standards.

Some usb ports in pc's and laptops are only 3v and dont have enough power to charge the x10 but if they are putting out 5v they work. On a pc try using the usb ports at the back which are usually all 5v, some front ports due to the way they connect inside the pc only get 3v. If its a laptop it depends on the specs but should be easy to find out from the makers website or the manual if you still have it. I guess car chargers etc are the same for usb as i had one that would not charge the x10 and one that can so for those it is best to make sure it can pump the full 5v.

I was having problems getting 3rd party USB chargers to charge my X10. To diagnose the issue, I cut open a cable so I could check the differences between the charger that came with the phone and other chargers.

I found out what the phone likes. It likes 5V on VCC and ground on ground and the data pins shorted to each other and nothing else. I was able to make a previously not working charger work by modifying it to this configuration.

I'm thinking I am going to make an intermediate adapter that will allow any USB charger to charge my phone.
