Glass Replacement - Is it OEM?

So, it happened. My first drop on hard surface and I am greeted with a crack in the glass. Ugh. The digitizer is perfectly fine however.

I have found a local repair shop and they assure me they use OEM glass. I am still concerned.

They did pull out one of their glass pieces from the back and did the water drop test. The water held together just like it did on my GS4.

1. Does this prove it to be OEM?

2. Is there a sure-fire way to know if it is it OEM or not?

Have you checked out how to videos on YouTube to replace it yourself? Pretty easy and can be done for $20 in 1 hour.

I did, but I am thinking the Liquid Optical Clear Adhesive (LOCA) method is the way to go and I am not too sure I want to try that myself.

The company that is local to me actually has a video of a GS3 screen replacement that sold me on this.

The short answer to your questions is no and no.

To the untrained eye (i.e. mine and probably yours) one piece of glass looks pretty much like any other so, unless you are an expert, it is going to be very difficult to tell the difference between a well-made replacement that is not OEM compared to one that is.

If it were me, I'd ask them to show you a couple of phones where they have replaced the screen and if they looked as good as new and worked properly, I'd take a chance with them. Short of sending it back to Samsung, you will never know if any repairer will use OEM glass.

Good points. I will be there tomorrow morning BEFORE they start and I will ask them to show me some of their work.

Aside from Samsung, I was thinking I could order the glass myself and provide it to them. I dunno. I just don't want to have something that just looks good. I like the strength and safety the OEM Gorilla Glass provides.

Oh well. I'll report back what I find.

How did you find out for sure? I was also looking into this company.

Let me know if you find a company that:

1) uses gorilla glass like Samsung, and
2) uses the LOCA method

I watched the following video where she explains a couple of ways to determine.

The first thing I noticed was the screen that they had was package exactly like the fraud one in the video. Even had the black tape across the Samsung logo. When I removed the tape, the logo looked just like it did in the video. The lettering wasn't crisp and sharp like the one on my phone. Comparing them side-by-side, I could see the black border around the letters on my phone. No such border on theirs.

I asked the again if it was OEM and the guy replied, "it is OEM quality."

I decided, I like their technique and will have them do the repair, but with a screen that I provide.

I ordered one from ************.

It will take 5-7 days to get here, but it is worth the wait.
