Yesterday my Maxx died on me, dead as a proverbial doornail.
I had about 40% of battery left in the morning and had not used the thing all day because of working around the house. (40% lasts me 2 days easy) I went to take a picture with it about 1 PM and it was non-responsive. Put it on the charger and the screen would alternate between the Motorola logo and a dead battery icon. This did not change for 3 hours.
I called Verizon and they had me run through a few different button pushes to get into the phone but, no dice. They are sending me another Maxx tomorrow.
I have a feeling if this was my old Bionic I would have swapped batteries and gone on my way.....

This will be no consolation to you, but my Samsung Galaxy Nexus did this -- and was unrecoverable. (I did all the reboot options, fiddled with two different batteries, even replaced the power switch.) The good side of the story is that this forced me to dump the old Nexus and buy the Maxx instead -- so ultimately I was happy. Not exactly your situation, sorry to say.

Well, good news I guess..
I received my replacement Maxx yesterday and before activating it I thought I would try my dead Maxx again. It turned on and booted up like nothing ever happened. I repeated the boot up cycle 4 times more with no incident.
I talked with the folks at Verizon and we both agreed that because I had no other issues with my original Maxx I would just keep it chalk it up to a glitch of some sort.

Wish me luck!

Well I recieved my new (replacement) Tuesday. I sat down to start the activation process and thought I should try to see if my broken Maxx would boot up. It came on and acted as if nothing was ever wrong.
I rebooted it 4 times without a hiccup. I talked with the Verizon help desk and we both figured since I had no other problems with the original Maxx I may as well keep it and send the replacement back, which is what I did.

So, for now everything is good and I hope it continues that way. :)

Just thought the collective ought to know..

Yesterday my Maxx died again, this time with over 80% battery, but with the same symptoms as before. There must me some sort of intermittent disconnect between the battery and the phone, just a defective phone.
This time I will keep the replacement Verizon is sending me. Pain the hiney to have to update a new phone but no choice here. :(

I thnk I have the same issue. I plugged my Maxx in at my bedside as always last night with about 40% battery. When I woke up it was non-responsive. So I plugged it back in. It shows 0% dead battery on screen. No reason for that to be true. I've let it charge for more than 30 minutes and still nothing.

Wow, this sounds vaguely similar with what happened to me about 12 days ago. My Droid Razr, fully charged just crashed. Only difference, when I tried to reboot, I'd get the Moto logo then I'd get boot fail garbage on the screen. Verizon tried to "fix" it - if you consider staring at it, shaking it and teaching me how to reboot it  - with no luck. Thankfully, my phone was still under warranty so the sent me a refurbished phone.

(I don't know what they do to refurbish these. The camera was somewhat flawed. It had not been white-balanced and pix come out towards RED. I'm a photographer so it didn't pass with me. Long story short - that phone is up for sale and I bought a Maxx).

Prior to this light coming on I tapped it on the table on all four sides. Then I went back and plugged it in. After about a minute the light came on. After about two more minutes it showed 4% charged then it turned on. I hadn't dropped it. There should be no reason why it wouldn't have charged nor should it have needed charged when I plugged it in last night. It certainly should not have drained 40% in the 6 hours I slept. Something's not right but for now it works. To be continued.

I'm wondering if the charger was not giving enough amps. If that happens, the battery will actually drain faster - it won't charge slower. I've used an 850 mA Moto charger with the Maxx, and that worked, but I'd prefer to use at least as much as the stock charger, which I think is 1.2 amps.

Was the phone doing anything in the background that might draw power, like being a hotspot for another device?

No it was just resting on my nightstand.

Anything plugged into the second port on the charger?

Nope. Just my Maxx. Nothing plugged into the other outlet either. Same routine every night since I bought it. Nothing changed. Obviously something went wrong in the phone. Whether it was a one time glitch or it is something that will repeat itself time will tell. I'm hoping for the one time glitch.

Well Deja Vu, I have been using my original Droid since last Friday night. :)
Hard to go back to this small screen and slow processor and old operating system. But, it works just like the day I put it back in its box over 2 years ago when I bought the Bionic. Wow time flys!

I should be getting my Maxx replacement today some time. Sorry to hear others may be having the same sort of trouble.

Same experience I had, Scott. My Galaxy Nexus just stopped working a few months ago -- a few weeks before my renewal date -- so I pulled out my OG Droid and got it online. It worked surprisingly well for an old phone. Some apps wouldn't function, but phone, email, and the essentials were fine. In fact, it was the signal strength and speaker volume of the OG Droid that then and there persuaded me to go with a Moto phone when I renewed -- hence, I'm on the Maxx.

That OG Droid is an amazing little phone.
