Flash to 2.1 or wait for Sprint to update it?

how hard is it to flash? All the places where everyone says to go are confusing as heck. Is there one forum that explains everything from start to finish and where can I get the leaked 2.1 ROM to do it myself?

I bricked my last Hero trying to follow a thread on XDA forums a month ago. UGH!

In that link, there's the manual route and auto rooting route. Both of which work if the directions are followed exactly as listed. There are also plenty of people whom are great advice givers like cpasso, mysticmead, 330D, myself, nicki325 (I think?), and etc.. GOOD LUCK

Thanks, I actually have rooted my phone and have removed tons of apps. My only fear is that of which bricked my phone...flashing the ROM. Could I do the auto flasher since I am already rooted? I did it manually.

Just wait man, its not that serious. If your like me I'm going to buy the EVO in October anyway. Who cares! No hard feelings to my fellow rooterS/GEEKS. I think it's to late to Root man.

I totally hear ya. I have already enjoyed that "rooted" feeling with the new Hero I have and I am totally looking forward to something better. I kind of want the Nexus One for Sprint versus the Evo because it seems to large for my taste even though it has killer specs. I have yet to hear anything about the Nexus One since Sprint made the announcement way back when.

If you already rooted, then you don't need to do an "auto flasher". All you need to do is figure out which ROM you want to flash. I would recommend Fresh 1.1 if you want to run a 1.5 ROM (Not sure anything runs faster than this one or is more stable[other than an overclocked rom]); otherwise, if you want a 2.1 Rom, I would recommend Fresh 2.0d. Just READ everything you can before you flash something to make sure it is the Sprint, CDMA, htc hero (assuming that is what you have) and you will be alright. To put a Rom on, download the zip and put it on your sd card at the root directory (meaning not in any folders), then boot into recovery on your phone (power off, hold home button, then power back on, still holding home button and continue holding home button only until recovery screen comes up. From there, flash a 1.5 rom using the flash zip menu item, choose your zip file that shows up once selected, follow prompts to continue, then after it is done, hit back arrow and reboot (WAIT patiently - minimum 5 minutes). If you are going to flash a 2.1 rom; BEFORE you flash the zip file, use the wipe menu item in recovery and wipe/data/factory/reset, after you wipe, then flash 2.1 rom same as instructions for 1.5 Rom. Good luck, if you run into any problems, post in rooting section and someone will help.

P.S. - Removing apps off the phone won't brick your phone, flashing something for a GSM hero or other phones instead of something specifically for your sprint, cdma hero WILL brick your phone. Also, I would stay away from flashing any new radios until you have a feel for what's going on.

I did an auto root on my phone a few days ago. I got tired of reading about how Sprint will be releasing 2.1, it is possible it won't even be released for the Hero. In hopes of forcing more people to buy the Evo. But I autorooted with fresh kitchen and was running fresh 1.1 for a couple days then just wiped and flashed to the newest version of damagecontrol. And I must say it is incredible. In my opinion it is smoother and faster than fresh 1.1 was. I have not found any issues or bugs in the last two days I have been playing with it. If you are already rooted then I would say go for it. Just make sure you only flash a ROM that it meant for the CDMA Sprint Hero. If you don't like it just put the stock sprint rom back on your phone. That's my .02

I want to root my phone but I think I'm gonna wait considering my luck with electronics. I tried to upgrade my hard drive on my PS3 & stripped the last screw & this was with a brand new Philips. I almost couldn't put in the new HD. Also, does anybody know how the OTA update will affect rooted phones?

I rooted my phone and put Fresh 2.0d on it this week. I did read a lot on these threads, and follow the step (I manually rooted) perfectly and had no issues. I'd say that rooting was not too hard!

Assuming you are rooted already; power off the phone. After it is shutdown, hold the home button while powering it back on, release power button once you turn it on while still holding home button - keep holding for about 5 seconds and the recovery console should come up (green and black screen). Use the menu, select backup/restore, then select Nand backup and it will create your backup. Once it is complete, use the return arrow and then select reboot to get out of recovery. The recovery is where you "flash" roms and other items too when you are ready.

Well I rooted my phone last week and won't ever look back. I flashed F 2.0d and its running well, my only gripes are the keyboard lag, I really don't want to flash the android keyboard. The browser has some pitch zoom probs as well. Other than that its running pretty good. Been looking at other ROMs lately and I don't thing is better suited for me than 2.0d at the moment.

I took a long time to read and reread all instructions and threads about rooting before attempting it. I got to tell you it's so worth it. 2.1 looks and feels so much better than 1.5
I know this is silly but just the full screen weather animation on the home screen it sweet. (when using the HTC weather/clock widget)

1. If I don't Root or Flash and accept the official Sprint 2.1 update, will I still be able to Root/Flash in the future?

2. If I back up everything (per online instructions) and Root/Flash DamageControl v2.07.2 now,then decide to go back to 1.56, can I upgrade to the official Sprint 2.1 in the future?

3. What about the Android programs I paid for (2 ea), will I be able to keep those when I Root/Flash?

4. Will I be able to d/l programs from Market after Rooting/Flashing?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

3. The way I understand it they are linked to your google acct, so you will have your paid apps available after you root. Just have to re download them
4. Yes. And you will have access to all the apps if you flash a 2.1 based rom.

Well, XDA doesn't make builds themselves (at least that's my understanding of it). If by XDA build you are referring to builds done by the likes of Darchstar, Flipzmode, and Damageless then I understand. Either way, it's all about preference to w/e works best for the individual.

I am running Fresh...I wish I would have done this sooner. I hear Fresh 1.1 is the way to go though. Very solid. I may just do that now.

Just my .02, but I prefer Fresh 2.0d over 1.1. IMO, 2.1 functionality is so much nicer, and there are so many more available apps in the market. Speed is very close, 1.1 may be a tad smoother, and the complaints about the keyboard are irrelevant to me since I use Swype anyway. I rarely follow the 2.1 threads anymore because I'm already enjoying it with full functionality and no glitches. No way am I going back to unrooted. We'll have plenty of great choices of 2.1 custom ROMs based on Sprint's release within hours of the drop.

I've been wanting to check out DC2.07.2, but I'm too lazy to wipe and set everything back up. If you do go back, be sure to do a wipe/reset and wipe/dalvik first or your nandroid may fail (won't hurt anything, you'll just boot back into Fresh).

I'm glad your experience with flashing went well, and good luck with whatever you decide to do next.

Uminchu has it right. 2.1 is the $hit. I totally realized how good the hero is after I flashed fresh2.0d. It really wakes this phone up. My battery life almost doubled, the lag is GONE, Google nav is way better than sprint nav, and the phone just works the way it was supposed to from the beginning. I'm definitely not looking back, and will flash whatever flipz creates from the official release.

u guys are killing me lol....couple weeks back I made up my mind to wait it out for sprint's 2.1 but the more I read about other rom's the more I just want to do it right now. but 1~ week away? i just feel that if i was going to root and flash a new rom i should have done it weeks ago so im still tryin to hold out. hopefully I make it to next week. if next week comes and goes with no update though....theres no way i'll be able to refrain any longer
