The Official Accessory Thread

On the linked product page, it says if you're not rooted you'll need to use the card reader with a "3rd party software". I'm not sure what they mean by that. Thanks. :)

Ah, I see what you are talking about now. I had missed that. :)

Nexus Devices

Does it or will it work with Nexus 5?

Yes. We have tested and verified that: (1) on a non-rooted Nexus 5, "Nexus Media Importer" can be used to read/view/write files using our reader; (2) on a rooted Nexus 5, StickMount can be used to mount an SD card using our reader for read/write access.
Note: one customer reported that "Nexus Media Importer" only works for him if he sets language to US English, but the latest version works for us even if we set the language our Nexus 5 to some other language.

What Nexus devices are supported?

Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012 original and 2013 new), Nexus 10, Galaxy Nexus.

Out-of-the-box Nexus Devices (not rooted)

You need a third-party App. We recommend "Nexus Media Importer", search Play Store for it, and see the following website for more information:
Nexus Media Importer
Please follow the instruction of the App; except you don't need a USB-OTG cable -- you just plug-in this reader.

What you can do. You can use the App to, (1) view photo, play music and video files (need apps installed to play certain type of video files); (2) read/open many types of files with necessary apps installed that can handle the specific file type (e.g., pdf document); (3) copy/move files between internal storage and external MicroSD card.

Limitations. You have to access the contents of the MicroSD card through "Nexus Media Importer" App -- e.g., you can't open or play any files on the card through a media player or file manager App directly.

Rooted Nexus Devices

Warning. Rooting your device may void the warranty of your phone or tablet and may cause irreparable damages to it. We don't encourage you to do that just to use this reader and can't and will not be held responsible for any damages if you choose to do so. Please see Disclaimer.
You will need a third-party App such as "StickMount" or "USB OTG Helper", and likely a "File Manager" App (plenty of free ones).
To support file systems such as exFat, ntfs, you need some extra software; please refer to the App for how to install that.
SOURCE

Note that Nexus Media Importer is not free but doing a search on Google Play for "usb otg" returned non rooted free results as well. Here's one for example: OTG Disk Explorer Lite

I got this case Monday (slate metal color) and have had it on the N5 since it showed up. It's a nice fit, and the buttons have an awesome feel to them. Took me a minute to get it on, but eventually got it. The TPU back seems to me to be less "grippy" than the back of the phone, but I'm going to keep it for now.

I have had an Otterbox Commuter on my RAZR Maxx since I bought it, and while it adds some bulk, it has saved my phone from two really bad drops on the pavement (one face down). I'm not so sure this case would provide the same level of protection as the Otterbox as it's definitely lighter and thinner.

Oh man you weren't kidding! This case is extremely slippery, much more than the phone. I thought the back would be a little more rubbery but it slides right off of my orb charger. I am disappoint. :( It looks freaking awesome for a case so not sure what to do yet.

I had someone ask me when I was getting a case for my new phone this week. If you didn't know what the phone looked like without one, you might not realize it had a case on it.

Also, I LOVE the way the buttons feel...it really is a nice feel. Not sure if I will keep it on long term though. I really baby my phones, but do prefer something sturdier for occasional time it slips out of my hand.

So I got a new case today.

I had had this one before:Amazon.com: Diztronic Matte Back Black Flexible TPU Case for LG Nexus 5 - Retail Packaging: Cell Phones & Accessories and it was okay, was a little more bulky than I had hoped and very flexible which made it difficult for me to pull out of my pocket because the edges would pull way from the phone. TPU cases are hit and miss and this one certainly wasn't bad but wasn't working for me.

The new case, The Spigen Ultra Slim version with clear plastic: Amazon.com: [360

UPDATE: I've had this case for a week or so now. It protects the phone fine. I thought the clear back was getting scratched bad...until I read that it has a protective film. I removed it and it looks fine now. I don't like how the buttons feel though. I will replace this case if I find one that has buttons that respond better.

I received both of these today. Keep in mind, I really don't like cases (or screen protectors, which I refuse to lose). I even went caseless with my Nexus 4 the 7 months or so I had it and it was flawless when I passed it on to my son (I told *him* o get a case :D).

The first one, the slim case, I don't like at all. Fits, very tightly, but I don't like the cheap clear plastic look of it. The corners are open, which kind defeats the purpose of bumper protection. Also, I didn't like that the only way to remove the Nexus 5 is to push on the camera lens to pop it out.

The second one, the Ultra Hybrid, is much nicer. I prefer the rubbery black bumper, and wish it were just that. The back is again chap clear plastic and I just find that ugly compared to the phone. I'd love for Google/LG to come out with a simple black bumper like they did for the Nexus 4. I'll keep this case, but only as a standby for if I think I might need it. Going to keep the Nexus 5 naked for now.

Been keeping my handhelds naked for 4-5 years now (Nokia 5800, Nexus One, Nexus 4 and now this). I'd actually rather have a few dings than an ugly case that hides the beauty of the phone's design.

However, that's just me. I fully understand people who want protection. ;)

What do you think of the official LG/Google cases? I think they went on sale today.

I expect them to be quite nice, actually, although, again, I wish they were just bumpers. I think they will be form fitting and this retain much that is nice about the shape of the phone. They are over-priced, which seems to be Google's way. Affordable phones, over-priced accessories. Still, I'm ordering the black one. ;)

Is a 'bumper' case just a silicone jacket....? Or is it just a thin plastic shell...?
I get confused..
Thanks

A bumper wraps around the edges and maybe has enough edge to lift the screen if you place it face down. It doesn't cover the back. Like bumpers on cars, they don't help that much against high impact but will cushion against minor drops and bumps of normal handling.

....but the back is a fingerprint magnet as well. I'm using it til the official ones drop.

Oh, and I ponied up for the official wireless charger. Currently I'm using the Nokia DT-900 and it works good, but...but...SHINY!

Damn. So did I. :rolleyes::D

Received my wireless charger. Haven't really seen or used any others so I can't really compare, but this thing is exquisite. Nice, solid black square wit a slightly tacky underside that anchors it to any surface you put it on (pulls up fine and leaves nothing behind, just gives it a very firm grip on the surface). The smooth top acts like a magnet to the back of the Nexus 5. Again, you can pull it back up, but you aren't going to accidentally knock the Nexus 5 off the table.

It charges pretty fast and worked with the Spigen Ultra Hybrid case on, which has pretty thick plastic across the back.

All in all, a very nice piece of kit and I'm very happy I bought it. :D

Just wondering, when you put your n5 on the charger is there any indication or notification like a little flash screen or sound on the phone when charging when the battery is still above 90% ? Someone was asking about this elsewhere. Thanks! :)

Basically, if it is below 100%, the screen comes on and the lightning bolt appears over the battery. If it is 100%, nothing happens, the screen doesn't even come on.

Oh cool, thanks. So if the battery is 90% to 99% the screen should come on for at least a second or whatever.

Yes, after I charged the first time, I specifically tested for that. Took it off the charger and put it back on. Nothing happened. I then turned screen brightness to full and ran the video intro to a FPS game, which got me down to 98%. I turned off the screen and put it back down and the screen came on with the lightning bolt showing. :)

With all my past devices, even my N7, I have always used the Seidio Active cases, they are expensive but I love the way they fit, don't add alot of bulk and you can get them with a holster (I don't carry my phone in my pocket). I checked their website and they are in production for the N5, I signed up for them to notify me when they come available.

well, I got this in the mail tonight: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FZ14E3S/ref=pe_385040_30332190_TE_3p_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

It's okay and will work but I'm worried about it flexing off the phone when I'm pulling the N5 out of my pocket. It's smooth and somewhat snug but has so much traction that it doesn't slide against fabric very well. I was looking for something a little more firm but I like it so far. You can also turn the phone upside down with just enough lip that there is no worry of the screen ever touching the surface.

Got the Same case but in purple. Don't have my phone yet but I have always loved diztronic cases. Have bought one for every phone I've owned in the last yr. always been satisfied.
