HTC DI and Corporate Email Servers

I am swithcing from my BB Curve and was wondering if anyone that has received the HTC DI is using on a Corporate email server.

How does it work?
Do you need the $15/month Corp Email Server subscription from Verizon Wireless. Everyone at Verizon tells me I need it, but they can't tell me why.

Are emails/calendar/contacts updated instantly?

I'm in a similar boat. I'm wondering if there is anything special that needs to be done on the corporate exchange server side, because I know iPhones do NOT sync to corporate e-mail at the moment.

Maybe a specific app that needs to be installed?
No, no and no. It merely depends on what kind of server your corporation has as to how you will set up your email. Don't purchase anything other than the default $30 data plan. Speak with your IT department, ask if it's Exchange server and supports Activesync. If it does, you're golden.

Thanks for the info. I know that we use Exchange Server and it has Calendar Sync.

I will call VZW and tell them to cancel the $15 monthly service.

I figured that since nobody could tell me what it does, that I would not need it. I asked several CSR's in the store and on the phone, and got a different answer every time.

A simple "I dont know" would have been acceptable.

Rarely do they know the answer and the problem is that they refer to it as corp email vs personal email. $29.99 vs $44.99 and this is true for Blackberry, but not phones using activesync like the incredible. As long as your access is enabled from the server and you have the server settings(domain, server name, user name and password) you will be good.

What if it doesn't support activesync? I believe that's the issue with not working for iPhones.

If your server is newer than 2003 sp2 version( I think) it will support activesync. Sometimes you see issues with corporate policies that the server is trying to push if the version on handheld doesn't accept policies(this happened when the pre launched). Are there any win mobile/ iphone/ pre or other droid devices running at your company?

No problem even if it doesn't. Activesync just allows a policy from an Exchange server to be pushed to a remote device. There is a default policy that can be changed for logins and passwords etc. A nice feature of EAS is that you can remotely wipe a phone if it's lost or stolen. Nonetheless, iPhones have to use either IMAP or the native Outlook type client since they do not support EAS. But I'm not that familiar with iPhones so you might want to ask around. Also, some network admins do not support EAS but that is totally their call. I love it.

Actually iPhone does support exchange activesync and it works quite well.
Not that this is an iPhone forum or discussion:D

Check out my site, I talked about corporate email and BES converting to Android. Should help you out a ton!

Is it relatively instant or do you see a delay?

It was instant.

I went through the default set up assistant for email after configuring a connection to my wireless router.

I know our server is set up to use Exchange Web Services, but I don't know if Android makes use of it. If it does, that could be why I had such an easy time doing it, it also could just be that I connected to wireless first.

OK. I just confirmed with IT that they currently do NOT support activesync. I don't know if there's another way to connect.

Do you just need to get your emails on the road? You can set up a rule to forward your emails to either your personal account or get a throwaway account like hotmail and have it forwarded to that.

If you want full sync capability, you'll need to plug it in.

The web browser on Andriod 2.1 supports the web-based version of Exchange. It's not great, but it works.

Everything I've read leads me to believe that HTC has fixed the Android ActiveSync issues and implemented support for security policies. I won't know for certain until I get my phone on Thursday and can do proper tests though. However, another thing to be wary of is just because your server supports ActiveSync, the phone may not work if they have locked out Android devices like my firm has due to their anemic, and completely worthless, built-in ActiveSync support.

I have my fingers crossed that everything works as advertised, but I've yet to hear anyone confirm that the Incredible supports all of the ActiveSync security policies my firm requires. The one I'm most worried about is the pin-lock, as I've yet to see any pictures or videos of an Android device using a pin to unlock the phone.

try looking in to a program called touchdown

i believe it is a onetime fee of $15 which is one month of what VZW was charging you. My company has activesync but i stumbled across this when i was looking in to it for myself.

Good luck

When setting up touchdown, these are the options:
ACTIVE SYNC
EXCHANGE 2003
EXCHANGE 2007

You may be able to do it without AS. Try it, it's free for 30 days, then it's $30.

Pardon my ignorant question (the DI will be my first android). I assume it's possible to maintain my corporate exchange email and my gmail in seperate places on the DI (meaning, not integrating the two in one inbox). Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

Thanks.

Not a ignorant question by any means. I do not have the Incredible yet, however on the droid, yes it is seperate, whether using touchdown or native exchange.

I have read the HTC's Sense UI (gadget) will show both in same....not sure....maybe a Incredible user can chime in....

GO WINGS!!!!!
