Wonderful Device But A Few Things Missing

I really like the Hero, its a great device, but there are a few things that I wish it had or that I hope it will have coming soon -

1. Better Flash Support - It's very awesome that I can broadcast to ustream.tv from the Hero as this gives me a way to share with the world my journey's as I drive down the road, etc (You can't multitask when you do this though). However, with that said, You can't actually watch any of the broadcasts as the version of flash on the device isn't good enough to watch these streams. This also goes for justin.tv and any other live streaming site, you won't be able to watch these.

2. Loopt - Its a great way to share with other people that you know what your doing and where you are, since it uses the built in GPS. It's also a great way to chat with and get to know other people that are in your area. However, I don't think this works properly on the Hero as it gives me a "Sorry! The application Loopt (processcom.loopt) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." error each time I try to login. Last night Loopt wasn't even showing up in the Android market and finally today it was, so maybe its going through some upgrades of some sort to support the Hero.

Overall its a great device, but I feel that flash isn't as much supported as we once thought. I know its flash lite, but let's get flash full! I also would like more ability to stream video from the device (thank you ustream, still waiting for justin.tv).

I hope an app comes out soon as well to allow you to easily play music remotely from your computer to the Hero as well. I know that Orb works, but you can't multitask with Orb running in your browser with one of your songs playing. It will stop your music if you try doing anything else. Gmote also works but its mainly for when your connected to wifi, and you can get around this and allow it to use the 3G connection but it takes a great deal of effort to set that up.

I did swap my Palm Pre for this, and the Hero definitely comes out the winner because of Android alone. However, one thing I do miss from the Pre is that when I was driving and I had telenav and Pandora running at the same time, when the lady had to come on to tell me what the next driving direction would be, the music from pandora would fade out and her voice would come it much louder so that I heard her. Once she was done, the music from Pandora would fade back in again. With the Hero, with both going, the music does not fade at all. You can still hear the lady give you the driving direction but you have to listen closely because its at the same volume as the music from Pandora. That's really the only feature I miss from the Pre.

I give the Hero 7 out of 10 stars in its current state, and I think it can have a 10 out of 10 eventually with firmware updates and applications being fixed for the device. Also, if we get full flash that will give it a 10 out of 10 for me!

1. Better Flash support is coming. Its got Flash Lite in it now, Adobe is supposed to be working on Flash 10.1 for every phone BUT the iPhone. In fact, there should be a beta sometime this month.

2. Loopt could be getting errors and force closes due to the changes they had to make to get it to run on a CDMA Network. I donno, just a guess here.

I've been talking to the guys at Loopt the issues we're experiencing are only on the Sprint Hero, they're not sure if it's the HTC Sense UI or the back porting CDMA ability into 1.5 that's causing the problems.

They upgraded loopt today to 1.0.4 and still no go. I should be getting another revision of loopt to test tomorrow.

I don't really see how you rate this phone a 7/10 on any grading scale, particularly for your reasons stated in this thread. You're coming across as more spoiled than critical. The Hero is am elite device. A worthy competitor to any phone on the planet. Easily the best phone I've ever used.

But everyone has an opinion.

I'm a consumer like yourself who shelled out $280 for this device (not to mention close to $80 a month for the service), therefore I have a right to be "spoiled", as you call it, and express my opinion on the device. Spoiled makes it sound like I'm saying "This particular function does not work, it sucks", which I'm not doing at all. I think I did a good job at pointing out the positives. You can call it spoiled if you want, I simply call it a consumer review. You obviously disagree with what I had to say, but I do feel that using the term "spoiled" is rather offensive. I don't denounce or disagree with you that the phone is a big competitor, it is also the best phone I've ever had as well. However, there is much room for improvement which I believe we will be getting. Right now, I hold strong in my 7/10 review and once other features are available (like full flash) I think it will be closer to a 10/10 for me. I mentioned that at the bottom of my original post as well.

Thank you for the update. I figured something like this was going on and glad that Loopt is working on it. It really is a great and useful application.
