Help new user and sooo lost!!

hey everyone!
i just got my hero last nite and still have so many questions... even after i read the manual!!
  1. before i got my hero i had the palm pre (which i hated!) but there was 1 feature from the pre that i was looking for... is there any way i can sync my itunes to the hero? i was able to with the pre and i could use those as my ringers and everythng... it was great!
  2. how can i use regular downloaded songs as my ringer? i was trying to figure it out last nite but i ended up falling asleep trying to mess with everything... lol
  3. hm... now that im here i have NO idea what my other ?'s were!!!
well any advice would be great! i tried downloading some songs and i see some songs in my library but i guess they were already in the phone... ugh im just so confused!!

Well, I think there are apps/programs out there to allow you to do this, BUT if it were me I'd do it a slightly different way:

I'm not a fan of iTunes, I prefer windows media player (personally).

I would:

Find your itunes music folder
plug the phone in
mount the SD card
drag and drop all the music you want over manually
flip Mr Jobs the finger
enjoy

I am not sure if this will answer your question, but I'm going to tell you how I use songs I put on the Hero as my ringtone.

First thing to do is download the free app "Ringdroid" from the Android Market. Then, go ahead and put the music you want as your ringtone onto your Hero by syncing it up with your computer (I'm not sure how or if there is a way to sync it with itunes.)

Once your music is on the Hero, open up Ringdroid. Ringdroid will then allow you to open up any music file you have on the Hero. What you can do now is edit the song the way that you want to hear it when a call comes in. For example, if you want the chorus to play, Ringdroid will let you edit the song so that it begins right at the chorus. If you don't want to edit it at all, just don't do anything. All you have to do from here is save the song and it adds it to your list of available ringtones in settings. All you have to do now is go into your settings and select that ringtone that you saved from ringdroid.

I find this pretty easy and simple to do, but if anyone else knows of an easier way then please share.

haha thanks for the tip... but heres my next question... whats the sd card? i kno thats prolly a stupid question but i really havent had a lotta time to play with this phone so im still tryin to wrap my thoughts around it

the sd card is your memory card it comes with 2 GB and you can get one to go as high as 32GB think of it as extra memory than what is already on the phone so the bigger the space on the card the more stuff you can put on it.

This is something I really like that HTC does. They don't force you to have so much space, but the option is there for you if you want it. I think this alone outdoes the iPhone's storage system. With the iPhone you have to decide before you purchase how much space you want, because you won't have an option to add more in the future.

While 32 GB is A LOT of space, more than I would ever need, I imagine one day they will release a memory card that holds even more.

this is true... but the thing is, although it is a lotta space, how much can the phone hold before having to upgrade to a bigger sd card? with all the apps and ringers and pics and everything else im about to put on here, would the 2G run out any time soon?

once you plug in the usb to a computer and mount the sd card and have the file explorer open you can create a folder called "media" no parenthesis, in the phones root folder which also contains the folders "dcim", "Music" etc. In the folder you just made you can create a folder called ringtones then you put your music inside the rigntones folder and they will show up when you are choosing the ringtone you want to play.

ringdroid will create these folders for you if you make and apply a ringtone with it.

No, because the way I understand the apps don't get stored on the SD card. The apps are stored on the device itself. Music, Videos, Pics etc. get stored on the SD card.

Thanks for that tip...this is an even easier way to get songs as ringtones if you don't want to use ringdroid.

Ringdroid is nice, I agree. I have it on my phone. The Hero is actually capable of doing this without ringdroid. While playing songs with the the build in player, hit menu, it'll give you options to set the song as a ringtone and trim it.

New user as well here.... I can see the Trimmer in the manage applications area but I can't find it to actually use it!!! I think the iPhone made me stupid, everything was easy, but messing around with the Hero is just too much fun.
Are you playing the song through the media player that it shipped with? If you are, press the Menu button.

Pretty sure I said this a few posts up. Maybe I wasnt clear?

Edit:
Make sure its in full sized mode, it doesnt appear to work in widget only.
