Help Donut update delayed till 2010!?

If you're to believe Hands on Sprint Samsung Moment Android phone – Android and Me, we won't be getting Donut anytime soon. Skipping to 6:10 - "they" told him about Donut in 2010 for "Moment", I guess Galaxy won't be getting it prior to Moment, if ever. We really need Samsung to tell us officially about Donut because if the delay is true, it is a major blow to early adopters of their Android phones.

Samsung, speak up! HTC already pushed Donut to their phones!

there is no benefit to moving to donut so soon as alot of people are making apps and various things using 1.5 as thats where most of the user base is majority of people using these phones will not even know this website or other enthusiast websites exist and have never attempted to update firmware.
software house need to cater for these types as they are the bigger group.

delayed till 2010 is only a few months, this gives samsung time to concentrate on getting thier current android working correctly and getting their update process sorted out as lets face it its a mess

im happy their chosen the path of doing things one step at a time rather than rush out and do it cos other menufaturers are doing and never completing what they actually started

again just like the behold2, this is actually a good thing

pressing OK is the same as pushing down on trackball. D-pad is the same as scrolling the trackball.

I've never had any problems with better terminal... do you have some specific problem there?

Well, G1 customers are definitely where most of the user base is, and they already started receiving Donut update. I think you're wrong and the reason why they're having problems is simple matter of human resources on the Android platform at the moment. If you read Russ' comments on Samsung kernel sources, it's more obvious... unfortunately

no, they are making updates more than twice a month so i doubt its human resources.
you think im wrong? thats your opinion but 1.6 is not an ota flash it needs to be done manually. jo bloggs doesnt care about updating his device and only wants to use it as hes been doing for the last 6 months.
the above IS the majority, people like us that push for updates and changes is the minority thats how technology works im afraid

look at vista over xp, EI7 over ei6. took people years to convert as they either couldnt be bothered or wanted to wait to see what an impact it would make.

I see. I'll have to give that a try later. Was trying to do one of those control-break signals. Though at the moment i reassigned my camera button to do it.

exactly. I know firmware updates are important, but not as important as WE, the technology enthusiasts, tend to think about.
I'd personally prefer a final GREAT and bug-free 1.5 firmware for the Galaxy than an early 1.6 release.

This is smartphone, not a dumbphone that noone ever even try to update. It's only one month on the market and I already feel like it's obsolete regarding new features. Samsung is fixing bugs, that's fine, but I expect much more. If Cyanogen alone could bring Donut features even before Donut was officially out and not break functionality, Samsung should find a way to do the same few months after Cyanogen.


T-Mobile is pushing Donut OTA, do you think majority of the people needed Donut? Why did T-Mobile chose to do so if they know what you've been talking about? Because they think it's the right way to handle their customers.

as far as i knew 1.6 is a baseband so couldnt do wireless flash, it had to be done by wire.

its got nothing to do with smartphone dumbphone, the reality is that people dont update as often as you expect if at all.

I know loads of people on HTC winmo devices that havent moved from the 1st rom, alot of which use them for business purposes.

samsung do give updates to the phone, infact one could say 3 updates in less than a month is pretty good going in comparison to other manufacturers.

we have a few custom roms out and a new one that is looking to be good shizzle and on par with the stuff cynogen is doing.

i dont understand the big rush to 1.6 tbh i really dont

Rasta, I pretty much agree with everything I didn't quote above.
Personally, I want to get v1.6 because:
- The HTC users are getting it, I want too (whaa whaa whaa).
- I knew it was vanilla, but I didn't expect beta.
- It's supposed to have better local search (see my earlier rants about PalmOS being better 10 years ago).
- any new update from Samsung is likely to fix bugs (of which we have plenty, the APN one being the most annoying).
- any new update from Samsung is a sign that they haven't forgotten about (or written off) us early adopters just yet.

Yep we will certainly be 1 firmware behind HTC everytime.

I spoke with a high level executive from Samsung who was extremely knowledgeable about Android development. When I mentioned Android 2.0 shipping this year, he looked at me kind of weird and snickered. He told me not to expect Android 2.0 until Q2 2010.

are you insane? HTC was the primary smartphone manufacturer for windows mobile up untill a couple of years ago, it had nothing to do with xda forums. indeed now their community is booming but this is a by product. xda forums is a product of success due to HTC's original success

If Samsung came out with Donut, you wouldn't be forced to update to it anyway because we don't have OTA enabled. Don't forget Google put bug fixes into Donut and very likely wasn't forced to rush it out to market.

If you're an IT guy responsible for mobile phones in your company, you wouldn't be chosing android devices in the start. I really don't get your arguments.

my argument is that i can appreciate why they wouldnt push it out when they cant even dev 1.5 correctly.
a 6 month wait to update on a device on a brand new basecode isnt that long from a lot of perspectives. in winmo some of the devices that are less than a year old cannot even use 6.5 or 7 when its released as the chipsets wont support it.

why on earth would any of us stick up for them? they dont reward us for loyalty

the point being is that getting pissed off cos someone has clarified that it will be coming but not till after christmas is a bit over the top cos
1. it is coming when some people were rumouring it was not going to be with us at all
2. its likely by this point samsung will know alot more about android with 4 devices out running 1.5 base code


me being IT and the mobile industry is not part of the argument but part of the understanding as to why the delay is actually a good thing.
