New HTC hero use confused about Gmail

Ok I just got my Hero and LOVE IT!!! Anywho, I have a gmail account and everything on phone works fine but I am confused about the following: When I get a gmail I get notified almost instantly via the notificaion bar at the top but it doesn't show up in my mailbox icon on my home screen. Now if I clocik on my notification it takes me to a different screenwith my new mail there, but if I click on the mailbox icon on my home screen the mail is not there but shows up a little while later if I do not read or delet it from my notification bar. Why is this and how do I get that mailbox to show me instantly when I get mail gtom gmail if I want? Thanks...

Check the gmail application. That's where gmail goes. It doesn't go in the mailbox, it goes in the gmail box, if that makes sense.

Did you type this from your phone?

Have you tried getting your Gmail from the GMail app and not the mailbox app found on the homescreen? If you arent using an exchange account or a pop3/IMAP mail account just swap that mailbox out for the Gmail app found with all your other apps. (The button to the left of "Phone")

What do you guys prefer...using the gmail app or setting up a gmail account with the mail app?

At least with the mail app, I can see how emails are pending for me on the widget. Also, it seems like the mail app, once set up properly, has more on screen options...can't decide which is better.

Ok confused again lol what is better imap or pop for receiving mail from phone. I onky get my email from phone or desktop right from gmail web page not an email client like outlook, and how do I set it up to use the email client on phone, and will it be push?

Gmail is currently push. If you set it up as pop or imap it will become pull. Which part are you confused about?

It should push to your phone without having to do anything. No need to make it a pop or an imap. Is your gmail not currently being pushed? If not, you should check and make sure you are set for auto sync.

Menu > Settings > Data Sync > Google >

Make sure you background data, auto sync, Gmail, Cal, and Contacts are al checked for sync.

10-4, I thank you very much. So lets see if I got this right imap, and pop are really only used for email clients on computer or phone basically each has its pluses and minuses for the phone dont need anything its push with gmail app By George I think he's got it!!!! I hope

I am trying to figure out- is only the gmail app push or is the HTC mail app also push? It seems like the gmail app gets the emails well before the HTC mail app.

Only the Gmail app is push. The mail app, and it's corresponding widget, are pull. You can set the sync frequency in settings.

Personally, I have my Gmail emails coming in through the mail app because I like the mail widget, and it displays all of my Gmail and Hotmail emails all in one place. I don't really mind the fact that it's not push. I currently have my fequency set for 30 minutes. I had it set at 15 minutes the first couple days I had the phone (got the phone last Saturday), and it would drain the battery REALLY fast. 30 minutes is a lot better on the battery life.

The Mail app is not necessarily pull. If you set it to sync via Exchange to a Gmail/Google Apps account (m.google.com) and set the frequency to "as items arrive," it becomes push... just like any other exchange account.

This is the kind of info I was looking for. I like the mail app better. It seems to have a better layout and better functionality.

Revisiting this topic...

I also think I'd prefer to use the regular mail app. HTC's mail widget is very handy. Here's my current setup:

Work (EAS) ---> Mail app
Gmail ---> Gmail app
bellsouth.net address ---> Gmail app (routed through Gmail)

Can I use Gmail to get my EAS work email and then use the m.google.com server address in the Mail app to get everything pushed? Does this come down to which app I like better, or are there some good technical reasons for leaving my mail split up like this?
