Text-to-speech on Htc Desire

there is an option in settings that allows you to install voice data (4ish MB if remember correctly)

ok..i did it..i download the data...now what??

i see no new icon in main menu..obviously no widget to use in screen..
wikipedia also refers in the " Comparison with nexus one" that there is NO speech-to-text support (ok might be out-dated or something)

so i download something that does not (???) meant to be in phone..i can not uninstall it..it does not appear in applications...

so is this a case like N1's gallery-voice search apps that was meant to be AT phone but HTC let those out??

ehmmm...i was not referring to "Speech-to-Text"
instead in the application that already is in desire and should "say" what you have typed..
i tried and select a phrase "htc rules" but did not hear a thing from it's speaker..and idea how it should work?

and again..i know and have read the "Speech-to-Text" and the keyboard that enables that...it's something different of what i ask...

or do i make thinks too complicate?

It's the same for me - I've got speech-to-text (voice recognition) working OK, but would now like to try the text-to-speech (voice synthesis).

I've installed the voice data (Menu > Settings > Text-to-speech > Install voice data) and can even listen to an example (which isn't too bad with the UK accent), but then there's no obvious way to select text to have it read out to you. I've tried in the Messages and Google Mail apps, which would seem like obvious choices for this, but can't find anything. Is it really not available or is it some blindingly obvious option I'm overlooking?
