So, is it sluggish?

I read one review that said this phone was sluggish, which would bug me because one of the reasons I want to switch from the iPhone is because I think it's too sluggish.

Now that the phone is out, what do you all think of its performance, in general? Is it at least as good as an iPhone 3G?

it was sluggish before the latest update. the update fixed that and all sprint hero versions should be shipping with it.

Heres the thing. I really like the sprint hero, but I just cant deny the fact that it IS sluggish. It just can't compare with the speed and of an iPhone 3gs. but if you are willing to sacrifice a little speed for features, then that essentially is what the Hero is

and Hero is a terrible media device. my sprint hero skips when it plays music... reminds me of an old portable cd player

Is your Hero fully updated? That sucks about the media skipping. I use my iPhone 3G to play music every day. I'd throw it out the window if it skipped all the time.

Yes, it is the Sprint version so it is updated with the new speed-improved (supposedly) ROM that all Sprint heros ship with. If you are using the Hero for music, as I really wanted to do (and still do but have to suffer a bit) you will notice the entire interface lag just a bit while music is playing. Flicking between homescreens won't be as slick, opening apps will take a bit longer, etc. Music skipping doesnt happen very often but does every once in a while Also, music QUALITY (even with good headphones) can't compare with iPhone. There is no EQ. Also, Ive noticed that the music app on the Hero is the slowest performing app. Pretty darn laggy, which is unfortunate.

But, when you are not playing music, the phone overall tends to be snappy with just occasional bits of lag.

Who told you this? The newest and most up to date, would be 1.6. Not 1.5 which is what the Hero currently ships with. God only knows what HTC and Sprint did to make the Hero compatible with CDMA on 1.5.

That said, I havent noticed what you have been experiencing. The snappiness is still there when sliding between screens even with the music playing. I also dont get any skipping. I have heard some stuttering in Pandora when running that, but I chalked that up to the network and not the phone.

Newest and most up to date Sense UI, not android. They released a new firmware for the European Hero to remedy the lag, but the Sprint versions already have it. I hope when Android 1.6 is available for Hero it will make things faster.

Yea I really hate the music skipping and music lag. Possibly my device only?

Gotcha.

And possibly. Maybe others can chime in with their music experience?

Ive had no problems with music so far, not much slow down on the rest of the system and the quality playing even over my tape adapter in car isnt horrible. I used the speaker phone a bit yesterday while playing a board game with a friend and the quality there wasnt to bad either, and its nice and loud. Pandora sounds nice, theres some lockup between songs sometimes but its only visual (doesnt display next song right away) and with the tape adapter plugged in there was a little skip in the song when recieveing a message but on speaker phone there wasnt at all.

The one thing I was very suprised about was that even with one bar and even sometimes less in my house Pandora streamed flawlessly..

I am using the SD card that came with the phone, and my Music App. is the slowest app on my phone. But I had a thought - if you use a faster SD card, would the music app be faster? Im not too familiar with SD cards, but I think the slowest is like 2.0 or something?
Thats correct. The Hero claims it only supports class 2 speeds, but that doesnt stop people from getting a class 6.

Which makes me wonder...

I just got my hero two weeks ago and have had a whole bunch of issues with it. I WANT to love the phone but can't. But for now I will just stick to the biggest issue . . . SLUGGISHNESS . . . SLOW . . . SLOW . . . SLOW

Sometimes it works fine and fast. And then next thing I know everything drags on. So I hope that if I give detailed info on my phone someone out there who is not havin any problems to see if I can pinpoint how to get my phone on its feet. PLEASE HELP. I WANT TO KEEP THIS PHONE BUT WILL RETURN IT IF I CAN'T FIND A FIX.

When I notice the problems:
-Searching for contacts in People takes forever. That might have to do with having a few thousand contacts, but the phone should do better than taking 20 seconds to come back with a result. It works better in other apps within the same phone
-Sometimes when someone calls I try to hit the answer button and it does not let me for a few seconds. Sometimes by the time I am able to press it, the call has already been missed.
-Sometimes when I am in a contact card, I try to go from for example general to messages or mail, and it just freezes for 20-30 seconds.

What I have done to or installed on my phone:
-Added ChompSMS and stopped using the built-in Messages interface. I did this due to a battery drain bug I had heard about the Messages app. I tried HandCent but it would take 30+ seconds for the main screen to come up. I have lots of threads. . . All that said I had all my issues before adding this program.
-Added Pure Calender. Although I had all my issues before adding this program.
-I tried logging out of all my social networking apps (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr) but didn't make it better.
-I do have some contacts linked to Facebook. But sluggishness happens during items not associated at all with any contacts linked with Facebook.
-I have GPS turned off

I have not done anything else to the phone. The rest is pretty much out-of-the-box.

Here are my phone specs:
-Says "with google" on the back
-99MB available space on phone.
-Model number HTC Hero
-Firmware version 1.5
-Baseband Version 1.04.01.09.21
-Kernel Version 2.6.27-533ce29d (htc-kernel@and18-2 )
-Build number 1.29.651.1 CL69164 release-keys
-Software version 1.29.651.1
-Hardware version 0002
-Mobile network type CDMA - EvDo rev. 0
-PRI 1.68_003
-PRL 60654
-MEID A1000007C6F24B
-Browser version WebKit 3.1

PLEASE HELP!!
