This is a review of Seidio LEDGER Folio Case for Google Nexus 7 (2013 edition). SEIDIO | LEDGER Folio Case for Google Nexus 7 (2013)
Let me start by saying that I'm already anticipating replies and comments with "but didn't you just reviewed a similar looking MoKo/Poetic slim case for less?" Sure, I did. If you are looking to save money and want to get a "typical" looking slim folio case - those are the one you should get. But if you want to get a very high quality (material, build, design) ultra-slim case for your 2013 Nexus 7 - Seidio LEDGER is for you. I don't want to put down one product in favor of the other, and I think its great that you have a choice which folio case to go with. But I do want to mention that premium price of Seidio LEDGER is fully justifiable by a significantly higher quality of the material/design/build and not because of the "brand name" tag. Let's take a closer look.
The box it arrived in is a typical red-themed package with an open front/back display so you can see the case from both sides. Most likely it's the same scaled down design used for iPad products, and as a matter of fact on the back of the package you will find a couple of references to 'iPad" in the description. No biggie, just the same text print used across different packages, I guess. Once you take it out of the box, you do notice right away how lightweight it feels. For comparison, I weighted it to be 108g vs MoKo/Poetic being 128g. In the same comparison, the height of the cases were the same, but LEDGER was thinner in depth and narrower in width when comparing to "competition". Now keep in mind, neither of these cases are designed for serious drop protection, but rather for slip protection and screen scratch protection. If you worry about drop protection, you will need to use something like DILEX from Seidio. So additional bulk of the case doesn't really make it more protective.
The base of the case, where Nexus 7 gets inserted, is made out of flexible soft rubbery touch PC material very similar to exoskeleton (or SURFACE) used in other Seidio cases. It has a very nice snug fit, and every port cutout precisely aligns with a tablet. This type of a material should survive a drop without a crack, although as you can imagine it's intended for light duty drop protection of your tablet. The inside of the case has a felted material to protect back of the tablet from scratches and to provide some shock absorption. The flip cover of the case is made out of some exotic Italian polyurethane material with a very unique to the touch cloth like textured exterior and soft micro fiber interior to protect the screen from scratches and direct impact. The cover is designed to activate Sleep function so it will turn display off and on as you close and open it. Also, in a typical folio design fashion, the cover has tri-fold to work as a kickstand for low (useful for typing) and high (useful for multimedia) viewing angles.
Overall, I was Very impressed with a design, material, and build quality of LEDGER. It looks and feels like a premium product, and when you hold it next to MoKo/Poetic similar looking cases - you can justify the premium price. What is important, you do have a choice, and hopefully my review will be able to help you in this decision.
