I tried to install swype and got it so that the keyboard would come up but when I tried to start "typing" the keyboard would beep at me and wouldn't enter any text. So I did the next best thing and installed shapewriter and must say I really like it. It took a few minutes to get use to but I was flying through text messages after a little while.

The only thing I don't like is that there is a warning that says it can track your keystrokes, so when I visit any site that requires a log in I switch over the input to the regular keyboard. Am I being too paranoid?

The warning is a precaution. All alternative keyboards that you download will give you that message. I use the standard keyboard when I type in pw. Rather be safe then sorry right? :D

Also, after using both Swype and Shapewriter, I prefer shapewriter since I find it more accurate, if I put 'id' it autocorrects to 'I'd'. This Swype does not do, which I found to be a tad bothersome. If you want Swype, there's a thread on this forum that'll have the Nexus version of Swype. Swype has a nicer UI and faster response then Shapewriter.

Edit: here you go :)
