Okay, so the other day I was out and about and decided I needed new stuff for my Hero.

I looked around Sprint and Best Buy on Monday for accessories. I also knew I wanted to pick up an SD card. Having priced some online, I knew what I wanted to pay.

I was shocked to see that Best Buy was willing to rape its customers with little care to the fact they did it without lube. Sprint did this as well, but I expected as much from them.

Best Buy was selling an 8g class 6? for 99.99? If not, it was damn close. This actually made me start talking to myself as I walked away. Sprint was probably pretty close in pricing of this item as well.

I went to Frys after. They didnt have any 16g Class 6 SDs in stock. They did have an 8g Class 6 for about $25 and a 16g class 4 for about $40. I hemed and hawed about which one to get. Finally deciding on the 16g class 4.

So my questions are... Did you stick with the stock 2g class 2? Did you upgrade your SD and if you did, to what, and what was your experience in pricing as well as buying.

Does the class matter? I have never heard of it until this thread.

As for me I have a 4GB that i keep in the phone itself but i also have one of those keychain miniSD usb readers, and that has an 8GB in it. I keep mostly music on the card in the phone, and movies, tv shows, and what ever other digital media i may want to move, or just have on my person.

it refers to the access speed... you want 4 or 6. I would go 6 as it is currently the fastest.

Once you root your phone and store everything on the card yes it the access speed will be very noticeable. Accessing anything currently on the SD like pictures or music the speed will make a difference. Besides, I posted a link above for an 8GB Class 6 costing $20! Not sure why you would want to buy a slower card?

And im not sure where you got that i was going to purchase another card? I stated in my OP that i already keep an 8GB and a 4GB on my person. I also already have two more 4GB, one 2GB, and about five 1GB cards. What can i say? I'm a hoarder...

what class is 16G SD card?

The Class refers to the read / write speeds. The higher the class, the faster the card. Its possible to get 16g SD cards in class 2, 4 and 6.

I upgraded to a 4Gb because it was free with my bluetooth headphone purchase. I have an iTouch, and don't plan on rooting my Hero, so it should suffice.

I have an 8 gig class 4 that I already had for my Sprint Touch. I will probably order a larger one online, but no immediate need.

I went with the 16 gig class 6 Transcend card from Amazon. I've never heard of memory speeds slowing or the amount of memory desired lessening and who knows what the future of handheld tech will be able to take advantage of.

However, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Hero can only utilize class 2 or 4 cards. Can anyone confirm this?

If the data bus for the microSD only handles a certain speed, all the potential in the world for the card won't mean anything. Having said that, if the card performs optimally vs. another card performing sub-par, that would make a difference. So if you had an under-performing basic microSD and bought a "class 6", it still might only be performing at the "class 2" level, but optimally. That would be noticeable. The class of the microSD only indicates minimum performance guarantees. If I am wrong on this, please let me know.

Having said all that, I am still buying something higher than a "class 2" because it DOES matter when you put the card into your PC and copy files.

I wish someone would write an Android app to test microSD card read and write speeds so we could absolutely know that is up.

I think it still depends on the card. In my experience, SanDisk cards easily exceed their posted class rating, where some brands like Adata, Centon or Rydek barely cut it (and sometimes don't). I've seen 8gb class 4 SanDisk cards outperform 8gb class 6 Transcends on more than a couple of occasions.

My initial thought to this was why go through the hassle of pulling the cover off the phone; wouldn't it be easier to just test them in a PC and assume the result would be consistent. But I think you're right, an in-phone test would reveal exactly where the class number ceases to be a factor, and which brands specifically achieve best results in a Hero. We could then accurately determine the best bang for our SD card buck. Good idea on your part. I wish I had the skills to take a stab at the app.

I have just purchased a HTC hero and am waiting for it to be delivered.
I am in the process of look at micro SD cards for it. and have been reading reviews on card speeds. and if its worth paying extra for class 4 or class 6 cards.

I have read that the sd card in the phone can be mounted when connected to a computer so that you can read and write data to the memory card.

dose anyone know if the speed tests can be run on the computer in this mode to give us an idea of the cards read write performance in the phone.

if anyone has been able to do this can they let us know the results.

I picked up and Sandisk Ultra 8GB/Class-6 card on Amazon for $30 shipped. I originally bought a 4GB/Class-2 from BestBuy for $18, but then found this bigger one.

I haven't noticed it opening the album any faster than the stock 2GB/Class-2 card. At times it actually seems slower to open and I only have like 6-7 3MB pics on it too. Maybe it's just me.
