A minor victory for the Droid in math class? :)

So I was sitting there in Calculus the other day working on some problems and we always manage to get distracted and start talking about other topics while we do said problems and our teacher usually talks with us. I don't remember quite how we got onto the topic, but we ended up talking about cell phones.

Student 1: *mentions something about the iPhone*
Student 2: I hate my iPhone. My calls always get cut off.
Teacher: Yeah, whenever I talk to someone with an iPhone I'm always going "What? What'd you say?" When my contract is up I think I'm getting a Droid.

At that point, most of the students in the class chimed in to say something about how the Droid is better than the iPhone (not the least of all being me ;) ). I just think it's refreshing to hear something about a phone OTHER than the iPhone from a bunch of teenagers, and the fact that it's the Droid is an added bonus!

Discuss. Or don't. :D

Yeah, I've considered that. I don't know how to feel about that. At this rate, Android might have significant time to build up a user-base before the Verizon iPhone is released, if it ever even happens. ;)

I've seen 3 iPhones in my school, but one G1, two Droid Eris', and three Droids, including mine. It does seem to be a carrier thing, but I am pretty sure I saw a Backflip in passing as well.

If Android has significantly more momentum when (if) the Verizon iPhone is released, maybe people will consider the options before they spring for the iPhone vs. "that phone they've never heard of". The Droid has definitely helped substantially with that effort though.

I dont know where you live, but I live in the land of iPhone. Every person in my school has an iphone or a blackberry. Android is just one of those phones you get if your parents won't but the other 2. On top of that, I live in the San Francisco area, and even bigger, California. Everywhere you go someone has an iphone. its huge here. If Verizon were to add iphone, I think the android phones wouldn't stand a chance

I live in New York City. It's far from middle-of-nowhere but the school I attend is rather small. Of course, you do make a good point, outside of this school I do see more iPhones and Blackberries than Android phones. I don't get what it is that gives anything Apple comes out with instant appeal to anyone, even if they've never used anything besides an iPod or iPhone.

Probably because when iPhone came out, it pretty much was revolutionary. Nothing like it had ever been done before. And Apple keeps adding new features that just wow me and everyone else. The functionality of iPhone is just so smooth, and while it isn't without its problems, it runs, looks, and has better features than most phones. Droid has a lot of features, but it acts up too often for me to not be annoyed.

I moved to a small town in Nebraska from a good sized city in Oregon, when I was in Oregon I didn't see too many iPhones, but I did see a ton of ipods. Android wasn't anything I had heard of at that time. I've never really been a fan of apple, not that there is anything wrong with apple I just don't like em. I'm more of a Linux Guy. Anyway, in the area I live at&t doesn't offer service. So naturally there is VERY few iPhones around. Blackberrys and media phones all over the place. Days after the release of Motorola's Droid I was seeing them everywhere, and see more and more people with them. In this area of the country android has made a BIG splash. I have heard people talking about the HTC Droid and how they want to check it out. This is strange as most people out here could care less about new technology unless it can help them farm. From what I've been hearing the weather apps have been selling droids to farmers who also get them for their teenagers who want the twitter Facebook MySpace ect. Android has a future, granted it may never take out apple but it is killing blackberry around here at least.

Every person at my company has a Camry or an Accord. Everywhere you go someone has a Camry.

I drive a Carrera GT and I don't really care if the rest of the world loves their Camrys. I like my ride better. ;) (Oh, and I'll take my Droid over the iPhone as well.)

I'm no big Apple fan, either, although I spend 8 hours a day at work on a Mac, and use a PC at home.

You have to admit: mostly everything Apple comes out with is totally thought-through, not only well designed but sexily designed, and pretty bulletproof.

I went through a series of non-Apple MP3 players and was content moving and updating my own files until I saw my wife using her iPod (a gift from a client) one day. "You mean you just plug it in and everything updates itself??"

My iMac at work has never, ever crashed in the 4 years I've used it (daily for hours at a time). I have yet to see a PC so bulletproof AND as great looking. (Why has no PC manufacturer ever put a USB mouse port on the keyboard???)

Not only was the iPhone never seen before, Apple came out with the bar raised so high that no one has been able to raise it higher yet.

I don't like the "holier than thou" attitude that Apple has and Apple users have, but damn, Apple sells some rock-solid stuff.

Agreed, 100%. I'm the exact same way.

Most likely if its a calling problem, its AT&T. If the rumors are true and Verizon gets an iPhone, I hate to say it but I think Droid will disappear.

A Verizon iPhone just won't happen before at least late 2012.

Apple would be stupid to put money into CDMA (Verizon's cellular technology) technology this late in the game. CDMA is on the way out and Verizon will be moving to 4G (based on GSM...same as AT&T/T-Mobile/etc) starting in 2011 (they are already doing pilot programs in 2010).

Verizon has also made their bed with the "Droid Does" thing for at least the next couple of years.

It also looks like we are simply seeing the dominance of the iPhone come to an end. Apple's biggest weakness is their biggest advantage. They want control of everything! Which provides a tailored experience, but limits user control. Apple and the iPhone won't disappear, but their smart phone market share will most likely shrink to more closely resemble their desktop/laptop market share.

I really love the functionality of my droid and it is a lot of fun to play with but more women would be apt to give it a second glance if it were "prettier" like the iphone. Just saying....I actually leaned more towards the Eris at first because of appearances but chose the droid because of the features and memory. I haven't regretted it but I really want a girly looking phone that can do everything. Call me greedy.

Yep, I'm hearing about the Droid more and more from casual users, even those with iPhones. Motorola hit the mark, no doubt about it. And although there is the general belief that the iPhone will make Android (or the Droid) obsolete once it gets to other carriers, I'm not so quick to jump on that bandwagon.

IMO, Android made its mark with the Droid and that mark isn't going to disappear any time soon. Yeah the iPhone might still be the no1 seller for a while to come, even on different carriers but Android will be right there along side it, chipping away at its market share ever so slightly. I say this, not only because Android is becoming more and more mainstream, but because the general vibe I'm getting from 'average Joe' is that he is increasingly doing his homework, and Google is very well liked and respected, even by some die hard Apple lovers. So IMO, the road ahead is not going to be a cakewalk for Apple like it was. There is real competition now and that competition is going nowhere.

Hardly. Like onefix pointed out, the iphone won't happen too soon and it'll probably be after VZW changes network architecture. It's not like the ONLY thing worth liking about Android is the network it's on. And yes, the problems they were talking about were AT&T problems not iphone problems.

Android has a lot to offer over the iphone and it's winning more people over every day.

I wish; TI-89s are expensive!

On a somewhat related note, I wish we'd get the Wolfram Alpha app already for Android. :(

I can't even use my T-89 in Calc. It was okay in Calc I, but II and III required me to use the dumbed down TI-83 that basically has hardly any more functions than those little solar ones you'd use in elementary school. It's basically useless in comparison to the TI-89.

I'm in Beginner's Calc, a high school course, and they require us to use a TI-83. Next year when I take AP Calc (I guess that's the equivalent of Calc I) they'll have us using TI-89s. But I do agree, after having used a TI-89 before, using a TI-83 and knowing what vastly superior options you have out there is just torment. :(
