Help HTC M8 Camera Discussion-Show off your pictures!

Cramming more pixels on to a very tiny sensor does nothing for image quality.
And unless phonearena.com and other review sites are a bunch of total noobs with a smartphone camera, neither does removing half or two-thirds of the pixels improve image quality. This is an HTC engineering fail served up in a market baloney sandwich. If the results were unequivocally superior to last year's 8-13 MP cameras, this thread would look a whole lot different. Now we wait and see how it fares against the coming onslaught of improved 2014 cameras.

I'll take HTC build quality and Sense with a less than stellar camera over Samsung build quality of with TouchWiz and the best camera ever invented.

I'd take durable polycarbinate build with the latest mobile camera technology any day, if I had to choose one.

But we all have different priority's, some of us buy phones for features and latest hardware, some buy them just because they look good.

Enjoy your HTC One M8.

I don't put much weight behind camera opinions by a phone review website. The most important factor in taking nice photos isn't the phone it's the phone user. Give Ansel Adams a smartphone he'd have shot a masterpiece. Why? Because the most important factor is the artist. No one asked Picasso what brand of brushes he used, they just revelled in what his mind and hands could create. Perusing those ratings is almost meaningless.
I know that picture composition and angle is the most important to capture a good shot, but picture quality has nothing to do with the photographer, but the equipment, otherwise professional SLR cameras would not exist. I change my phones all the time and no phone even comes close to the GS4 camera. All the shots come out just right. I use it as a backup to my Canon SLR and once posted online, nobody notices the difference. The only issue I have with the GS4 is the crappy plastic cladding. I wish it wore the body of the HTC One. I was hoping that this year, either HTC improved the camera or Samsung gave its new flagship an a metal body. Alas none happened, so I'll probably have to look elsewhere for my next flagship phone as neither HTC nor Samsung have a real flagship worthy of that name IMO.

This from a guy who buys a phone because of its camera.....

I couldn't care less about what it looks like. Other than the camera, what is the M8 missing? You mention features and latest hardware, that's exactly what the M8 has.

The Galaxy S5's camera is meant to be pretty good, 16MP and it's using ISOCELL should help it capture more light so it will come better in low light conditions as well as other benefits.

Read the link below, just accept the plastic as it's got it's advantages as well.

Here is why the Samsung ISOCELL CMOS sensor in the Galaxy S5 is so awesome [VIDEO]

Everything you've said suggests otherwise.

Anyway the only unique feature the HTC One has is the stereo speakers, otherwise it's really not that different.

HTC One does lack 4K video recording but that's not possible with a 4MP camera and it's not water or dust resistant and no removable battery.

There are also the new gimmicky features like the fingerprint scanner and heartrate monitor.

I like the design on the HTC One and if they included a reasonable camera I would have bought one because I want a new phone, but I don't want to buy a new phone that has a worse camera than the phone I'm currently using.

Looks waterproof to me...

Try it yourself, go on and post a video. ;)

I'll pass.

I will, however, be happy to take some comparison photos. I have the M8 (obviously), my wife has the M7, and I still have my DNA. My guess would be that the DNA wins in good light, the M8 wins in low light, and the M7 never wins.

That said, I never rely on my phone for any important photo. I generally am just snapping a quick photo to send to someone, and for that, I am quite sure the M8 will be just fine. And since it will likely take better indoor photos than most, it may even be better for my purposes.

Obviously everyone's needs are different. If you need a camera replacement quality image, the M8 isn't for you.

I do wish HTC had put a better camera in the M8, but the rest of the phone is so good, I'll be just fine.

Please post some pictures as that would at least get the thread back on topic. :D

Can't comment on the DNA, was never released here and I know next to nothing about it.

Here's a sample pic. Not the greatest, but it was where I was going. Looks fine to me.

IMAG0009.jpg

EDIT: I shot that in 4:3 which apparently reduces resolution quite a bit. That's a change from both my Inc4G and my DNA, as both of those shot highest resolution in 4:3 and lower in 16:9. So I guess leaving the M8 in 16:9 is the way to go.

I'm gonna chime in for a second...Comparing the S5 shooter to the M8 is ridiculous. The S5 is a 16mp shooter that is pretty much awesome. The M8 is just not meant to be awesome, it's filled with gimmicks and is not in HTC's priority basket, which is fine because not everyone buys a phone to take pictures, or even uses their phone to any pics at all.

Ok as for me, I need a phone that takes pretty awesome pics! I will leave final judgement up to myself when I visit at&t over the weekend, if they don't have them in stock I'll head over to VZW and check it out.

I don't know what gimmick your referring to but Samsung S line has more gimmick than any smart phone out there. For me the camera is not that important as long as it can get the job done. I prefer the better sounding speakers over the camera.

In 2014 and the price they are asking for this phone off contract we should get both!

He's obviously referring only to the cameras on the S5 and One M8, not the two lines of phones. And, yes, both cameras are gimmicky, but unlike the One, the S5 is going to take fantastic pictures. Even an S4 can do better:

The new One does do far better than last year

The Verge is the last place anyone would want as for review. When it comes to a Android device the big tech guru's tend to down play android devices. Those wacky things is just an option that OEM provide. Its not required if you just want to take a photo and that's it. I own the one and now a nexus with 8 megapixel and I don't see a big advantage with the nexus.

I use my Nikon D7100 to take good looking photo's.
I use my smartphone camera if I want to share funny moments on Whatsapp or to send info about something where a picture sometimes is better then only text. Things like that. 6 megapixels is more then enough for that.
That's cool, but in my line of work, from time-to-time I need to take good photos and I can't lug around a full DSLR for when I do. Sometimes I have to take pictures from a distance, so a 4MP smartphone camera won't do either because the only option I have is cropping. My S4's camera does fine, the M8's would not. And I could care less about posting pictures on social media sites.

For all of those who think anyone dissatisfied with the M8's camera is just biased (I won't start quoting you, but you know who you are), please read this:

I was going to switch my iPhone 5s for an HTC One (M8), but
