I don't get it with this Google contact syncing...

I have it set to sync my contacts, mail, and calendar automatically every single day. Many times, I do it manually just to be safe. Still, after putting the new beta on yesterday, it synced my contacts up using a backup from what seems like at least two months ago. What's the deal?

I'm missing contacts I have added the past two months and resyncing does nothing to solve it.

It's the one thing I have not figured out about this phone.

And why don't they show up in my GMail as well?

thats weird. if you need something else to backup your numbers with though use lookout. you can backup and restore remotely.

I have had this problem before. The problem is, when adding new contacts it adds them as "phone" contacts and not "google" contacts. Both of these "types" of contacts look the same in your contact list. The last time I did a factory data reset, I believed that I would retrieve all of my contacts automatically, however, I did not retrieve any of the contacts I had added to my eris since the date of purchase as it was adding the contacts as "phone" contacts and not "google" contacts. For instance, if you look on your google contact list, the only contacts that will be there will be the ones you originally had transfered over to your phone.

The way I got around this when I upgraded to 2.1 V3 last night is to use the mybackup pro program ($4.99). There is also a free version that will work for 30 days if you want to try it out. After it backed up my contacts, I copied the backup folder to my desktop on my computer and formatted my sd card. After putting on 2.1 V3, I re-downloaded mybackup and restored the contacts after dragging the backup folder onto my sd card once again.

Good to know. Also, how do you change an existing contact into a Google contact and not just a phone contact so that the phone will back it up automatically? I went into someone on my phone who I know isn't a Google contact and pressed edit, however, I don't see an option to change it.

Not gonna lie, that's just ridiculous...

So you accidently set a contact as a "phone" contact at the beginning and unless you completely re-create the contact, you can't make it a "google" contact so it will sync with gmail...

Come on, like people really ever change their minds about stuff. Besides, Google knows that all those other people aren't that important and you don't really need to talk to them. ;)

Haha, I know it's not a big deal. I just had to vent for a moment.

Now the only problem I have is the fact that I purchased mybackup pro (which was recommended as one of the best backup programs) and all I can find on the 2.1 marketplace is mybackup (the free 30 day trial). Even when I press the "Buy Now" button in the trial, it says it couldn't find the app I was looking for.

Don't tell me the mybackup pro app is specific to 1.5 and I wasted 5 dollars.

Protected apps won't show up because of we are running a leak. Verizon has to report something or other to the market and it will open all that stuff back up. That won't happen until after the OTA though.

You may want to contact the developer of the app and let them you know you bought it and can't download the full version. Most of the good devs will give you a download link.

Just so we all know and can backup manually...where specificly are the contacts stored on the phone?

Good question. I dunno. I did the vCard backup but can't find it anywhere.

Then I logged into GMail on my laptop and went to settings, they import contacts from other mail services. You can't upload an actual file with all the info.

I really hate this thing.

You download the mybackup pro .apk file from their website to your computer and transfer it over to the sd card on the phone. then use an app installer to install it, i use appInstaller. you have to set the phones settings to accept installs from unknown locations, but i think appInstaller does this for you through a prompt.

i also got the paypal .apk from an overseas forum too as well as couple other programs that were no longer in the market after i installed the leak.

I am familiar with installing third-party apps. ;)

Never heard of the program until now. Got the apk and it backed everything up very well and quickly. Whether it brings it back, that's another story. We'll wait and see.

What I can't seem to figure out is why, when I add a new contact through the phone and set it as a "Google" contact, it will show up in my Gmail account, but won't show up in my phone. The only way I can get a new contact to show up in my phone is to add it as a "Phone" contact, but then they don't sync to Gmail. Anyone else find this happening?

For reference, I'm running the v3 leak on a rooted phone.

ETA: Contacts added through the phone as "Google" DO show up when I click on the "Phone" app, but are not visible through the "People" app. Very curious.

Oh thank God. I thought I was the only one that was having this issue and was confused as hell. I was sure that I was doing something wrong and could not figure out for the life of me where all the contacts I've added went.

It was driving me nuts. I could find some people on some lists but not on others and I had no idea why. Why in the eff wouldn't they just show ALL of your contacts on EVERY list? Or let you pick which ones to show?
