Help OS Running New Programs While Screen is Off?

I wasn't able to find anything on this after a cursory search, but it seems like my music player sometimes kicks in when the screen is off and the phone is stowed in my pocket. I can't seem to recreate the behavior predictably by playing with any buttons, though, so I'm not sure what's triggering it.

I have the new HTC Hero on Sprint.

Any ideas what might be causing this behavior, or how I can stop it? It's pretty embarrassing, and I'm nervous to go into a theatre with the phone at all now, even when it is on silent. Even short of the music player, more often the phone will wake from screen-off with some other page up front (not the main home page, but one of the other views like the home page, the ones you get to by flicking right or left from the home page... sorry my terminology is all noobish here).

I have advanced task killer and have noticed that when I kill all apps and put the phone down for awhile, when I pick it back up and look at the task list, most of the apps are running again. I know alot of them are services that update and whatnot, but some of the programs that you would think shouldn't open by themselves (voicemail, calendar, etc.) seem to do so anyway.

I agree, I but the apps that bother me the most are stock market and peep, and few others, I just cant get rid of them....I cant even uninstall them...

You can't remove pre-installed apps that came with the phone. Whether jail-breaking will allow this is yet to be seen.

As for the voicemail & calendar waking up... voicemail kinda has to check itself doesn't it? Otherwise how will you know you have one if you don't have the phone with you or the ringer is off. With the calendar, are you sync'd with your Google calendar? If so it's probably waking up so it can check if you're online so it can sync itself.

Another issue is that when you open some applications they are associated with others and force them to open as well. So when you look at the TasKiller list they'll be in there unexpectedly.

Check when you download from the market, and before install look to see what other Apps it works with. Unfortunately this requires you to go the TasKilller App everytime you open and finish with an App to consever power...but it does work to conserve juice.
