Help Phone Book

My address book is all over the place! I am coming from a BB curve 3300, i had my contact list with numbers and emails within same field per person. When the address book was transfered over to my Hero, i received 3 to 4 different fields per person! How can i fix tihs without having to manually go in and delete 3 of the 4 fields and enter email, cell numbers to one of the contact?

(not sure if it makes sense)

I don't understand what you are asking. On your BB you had a single field that contained phone numbers and email addresses for a person? As far as I know that won't work on the Hero (I know it wouldn't on winmo) as things like sending text messages are restricted to phone numbers marked as cell numbers. I suspect you wouldn't be able to send e-mail either if you set up an e-maill address and phone number in the same field.

Actually I just tried it and I am right. You cannot use your contact list/phone book entries to do anything if you try to combine fields. Any item you want to use on the phone has to be in the same field. I have had a BB and don't remember it storing entries in single fields and I know WinMo contact lists don't. I can't imagine how the phone could discern what was what in a field that jumbled. Maybe I misunderstood what you are asking but I am failry certain that storing the data in the manner you described would render any phone book on any phone unusable. Could it be that you are asking about the way it dispays information rather than the way the data is stored?

It sounds like hes saying that his contacts, which might have had numbers like Home, Work, Cell & email addresses are now listed as seperate contacts..

If that is the case, and its THAT messed up. It might just be easier to go online and manually enter/edit all your contacts in gmail, delete your current contacts off the phone, and force a sync right after.

Pain in the butt, I know, but it beats entering them in on your phone. Fear of something like this was one of the reasons I manually entered in all my contacts to gmail prior to the release of the phone.

Yes, you really need to have each contact type (home, cell, email, whatever) separated into their own fields. Otherwise, how's the machine going to know where one thing ends and the next begins?

One solution:
Make sure that, in all instances of Joe User (each having only one contact field filled in), the name is spelt the same. Then, export and reimport within GMail Contacts -- the import should merge all Joe Users into one record with four contact fields.

Beware! The export/import is going to drop other info, if you use more than name and contacts.

Ok thanks guys. I will try that when I get back. Is there only one synch program? I downloaded it from HTC site but does not give me any options to customize such as importing pictures, music etc.

Connect via USB, then one of the choices is "MOUNT", choose thay and you can use the phone like a thumb drive and put pics, music etc on it...
