The delays in OS updates for certain devices has been because of the manufacturers and carriers not any big differences in the OS. If it was because of problems porting the updates then rooted phones wouldn't be able to install the updated OS either. Carriers are baaaaddd lol
While I tend to agree with you, the carriers play spread-betting (i.e. they support the largest number of handsets to maintain the largest number of customers and attract the largest number of new ones), thus it is not always in their interests to update all handsets.
Those of us that get over-excited about the latest trick are usually willing to go for it, and sign a new contract. (I have to admit to signing up for the Desire 2 months before my existing contract ends could not help myself!) Those who are only vaguely interested in the tech, and there are a great many, will stay with what they have (maybe complaining, but still quite happy with what they have).
And, the vast majority give somewhere less than 2 craps about this kind of thing, and therefore do not care about updates/rooting or what the phone can do other than what they use it for most (texts/pics/whatever). Moreover, the vast majority of handsets are versatile enough to do most things (i.e. profiles, scenes, have calculators or what have you). Factor in the fact that many people cannot afford these high-end devices, or are able to take out a contract, and you are left with the most ridiculous market that specialises in loss-leaders (majority of phones), based upon the principle of obsolescence, to encourage contract signing.
This leaves us with the question: in whose interest is the updating of older handsets?
The carriers? No, for reasons above.
The manufacturers? No, as they wish to continue to sell new models and more of them than old models (year on year growth, etc)
The OS designers? No, it is easier to redesign OS for the highest spec (and the OS manufacturers are also selling phones)
The users (us)? Well, only partially. As above, most people do not actually care. However, this is a strong argument for opensource, as it allows those who wish to do. That the 'carriers are baaaad' (and I do not doubt it) opens the space for the 'devs of goood'!
Anyways, apologies, I had to respond...

I have been setting myself up to root my phone, but am thinking that I do not need apps2sd at the moment. I think I am going to wait and see what happens over the next few months, and if any real changes appear, but then again... can I stop myself from the thrill of rooting?
