Looks like i'm going back to the Droid after all of this

So i've been through a bunch of Eris at this point. Most of them have had silent call problems, and that was with 1.5. When upgrading to 2.1 (the one time i did it) the problem got worse. I also received 2 refurbs with scratched screens. There are a bunch of issues with the phone that have been driving me nuts. Not to mention that 2.1 probably won't officially be coming to the phone anytime soon after everyone kept suggesting we'd have it ages ago. There is a lot to like about this phone and I will definitely miss certain things. But ultimately as a phone phone I thought it stunk.

I originally had the Droid but switched because of suspect build quality issues (lint under screen, easily scratchable metal bezel, paint chipping off camera button quickly) and because it was massive and square. But after a while with the Eris I started wondering if I had made the right choice. I still love the form factor of the Eris for sure. And most of the time it did it's job nicely. But again, the dialer and the signal and some other things related to the phone made it a PITA much of the time, for me anyway. bettery didn't bother me but it definitely could be better.

So I sent an email to customer service outlining my complaints and asking what my options were. I figured at best they'd let me get another refurb Eris which would have been fine at this point considering I can upgrade again in about 8 months. But when they wrote me back they told me I could select another device (one of the Palms or a Storm 2), I could get another Eris, or I could upgrade to something else at the 1 year contract price. The guy left a phone number and told me to email him or call him with my decision. I gave the guy a call immediately and after speaking with him for a few minutes I asked if the Droid was another possibility. He said no problem. He also said he'd ship me one from their new inventory so I wouldn't have to deal with any possible refurb problems and i'd get all that I needed in terms of charger, battery, etc. Should be here Tuesday or Wednesday.

I thought this was awesome. As soon as I hung up with him though I thought I should have asked about the Incredible. I called back and left a message. He returned my call quickly and said that because the Incredible is so new it's not really something he has access to selecting in his system unless I were to buy one at the 1 year upgrade price. I certainly don't want to spend a couple hundred bucks on another phone at this point even though I could have eventually sold my current Eris and made some of that money back. That's always a bit of a hassle, and this phone has a small scratch on the screen (though most wouldn't notice it) and i'd have to disclose that and also that it's a refurb. So I probably wouldn't get more than maybe $150 for it at most. So i'd still be spending a few bucks and i'd have to bother with the sale and mailing it out and everything. and I figured the Droid is more than enough phone for me, especially considering i'd be getting it for free. And still be able to upgrade again in 8 months.

So i gotta say i've been more than impressed with Verizon and it's customer service. Don't think i'd have these options with Sprint, at least without a fight.

I snagged an otterbox for the Droid from Newegg for $22. I need to do a lot of research now as i am totally out of the loop on this phone. i don't even know if it's received the 2.1 update officially. but i'm happy to be getting it. i'll probably be missing the Eris soon and the beautiful HTC Sense. but hopefully the Droid will make a better phone phone.

just thought i'd share my interesting experience.

Try out GDE on your new droid. I actually prefer it over sense.

GDE. will do. is that a home replacement? is it a free one? i'll be sure to look into it. also, did verizon roll out 2.1 for the Droid yet? that will be my last question before i head over to the Droid forums and start asking questions. i think they'd laugh me out of there if i asked that one. thanks.
