exchange to sync email due to the fact you have more options on the email client that comes with phone as opposed to the basic gmail program that comes with phone? Is this a good way to go? Is exchange just as fast in pushing the email as google is when it syncs as it comes in? Thanks...

I sync emails, contacts, and calendar using Exchange. I only sync the gmail email account I registered my phone with thru Google. I have one other gmail account that I setup as an IMAP account thru HTC Mail.

i think i'm going to do the exact polar opposite of what you're doing (well, maybe a "hybrid" opposite)

i want personal email to be with gmail (and the acct i used to initialize the phone)

- then calendar in google (work and personal calendars are shared/synced together thus a change on the work calendar = a change in the personal acct calendar = update on my phone)

- and i want to build an exchange server to host the shared company contacts



if google would enable contact sharing like you can share out your contacts, i wouldn't need to active-sync to an exchange server

anyway, that's my plan

Besides having access to the somewhat better email app on the hero, what are the other benefits of it setup through active sync?

Same question for calendar and contacts, what are the benefits if any of setting it up through active sync rather then google sync? I would think that contacts/calendar would sync better with google sync for gmail wouldn't it?

Ok, so I breifly set up my gmail account via active sync JUST for the emails. I kept the contacts/calendar with google sync. At first it seemed pretty cool but then realized that for some reason it seems to be doing ALOT of sync'ing everytime I open up an email from the email widget, or even on it's own. At first I thought well maybe it's just doing alot of downloading since I had it set to download ALL my emails from gmail. But even after it seemed it was done, it was still syn'ing alot on it's own for no reason.

Is anyone else experiencing that? I had to delete it and go back to the regular gmail app and it stopped doing it.

Honestly, in my experience Google Sync is my saving grace. BUT, the most important thing to do before you initally set it up is to login to Google Contact and clean up your contacts. Without doing this, it has a tendency to sync amost all the random email address you've ever email, and all kinds of random stuff. Once you clean up the contacts you'll never have to do it again. I <3 IT!!!

I don't use an exchange server of my own of any kind, but when I got my Hero, I started using the gmail, calendar and contacts syncing. It works great with my email and calendar. Contacts work fine back and forth between the phone and google, but it doesn't sync back to Outlook.

My calendar is pretty cool using google as the go between. I can change/add appts in anyone of the 3 places and it auto syncs to the other two. The 3 being Outlook on PC, phone and goodle calendar.

The calendar items are correct on outlook and google calendar, but when google syncs them with my Hero, they show up an hour earlier on my Hero calendar. I checked the time zone settings on my google calendar, and it shows central standard time as GMT -6:00. On my hero, the time zone settings show central standard time as GMT -5:00 (this discrepancy exists regardless if I let the phone service provider determine the time zone or I do it manually). I assume this is the problem. Any ideas on a solution?

I suspect that's a DST issue which will go away in less than two weeks. I am not seeing the same issue. While my TZ says GMT -5 my events still show up without any problems. I sync both outlook and Google Calendar (had duplicates for a while since I had synced Outlook with my Google Calendar) but not I sync them both to my device and the times are correct.

I will make a note of all my settings and see if I can replicate your issue and then correct it with my current settings and let you know.

My bad. I meant to say Exchange not Outlook. I have one piece of Windows kit and it's a corporate laptop with a horrible VPN client that is required to remote in and work from home. So HTC Sync isn't even an option for me. I'll be more careful and specific in the future. I sync OTA only with both Google Calendar and a corporate Exchange server.

I have used gsync it to sync multiple google calendars to outlook as well as gmail contacts to outlook contacts. I have used this for almost a year and it works great everything stays in sync. Only thing that sucks so far is any contacts that have photos get automatically compressed on gmail contacts so when they show up onn caller ID and elsewhere on the phone they look like a$$.

I am dying for an Desktop outlook 2007 tasks and notes sync. Right now I am trying Remember the milk synced to Astrid for tasks (astrid seems to be the best for the ability to snooze at my specified time vs a fixed default time or no snooze on all the other task apps. For notes i am trying gnote synced to google docs. I am quite shocked that neither iphone, pre or android shipped with full Outlook desk and even more shocked that they dont have a good native tasks app w/snoozing intervals. That is the only place where winmo remains a winner.

The sync from outlook to google calendar works fine. No issues with time adjustments. It is when google syncs the calendar entries to my Hero that the appointments get moved back an hour. I have synced with gsync and with google's outlook sync app, it is still the same issue. I also discovered that some of the the appointments do not get moved an hour. Literally, on the same day, I will have one appointment that is an hour early and another appointment that is the correct time. I am confident this is a DST issue, but is there a solution? A calendar that is only functional 6 months out of the year, isn't functional. I may try syncing directly with HTC sync and see what happens.

yup, both me and my wife use it. though hers is generating errors right now. hasnt work very well on her phone but mine has been very consistent. hers might need a factory reset. bummer.

Go into the Calendar App > Click "Menu" > "Calendar's" > and make sure that all the calendars you have on your Google Calendar that you want on your phone are checked. That should do it.

Check on you Google Calendar, Under "Settings" > "Calendars" > make sure that "Show in List" is checked for all the Calendars that you are talking about. It's just a guess, but that is the only other idea that I have. All of my Sports and Holiday Calendars have shown since the first day that I got my phone.

Don't forget that you will have to manually sync in order for changes to show up immediately.

Mine syn up fine, so we just need to narrow it down and figure out what the issue is.

I am a Google Apps for Domain user, I wonder if that could be a variable that may make a difference? Who knows.

I did that in the past, but double checked to be sure. They are all checked to "Show In List". Since yours show up, it's a head scratcher as to why mine doesn't.
