when google took away 3d app integration with google voice, i was forced to get cell coverage for the first time in my life. and while i will in fact be keeping my $10/month unlimited talk and text plan just for emergencies, the truth is that i'm not sure i've ever made a phone call, or sent a text, when wifi wasn't available.

so today i can, once again, make free calls over voip, as google voice is now, after so long waiting, incorporated into hangouts. it sort of infuriates me that google took so long, as iOS has long had this feature.

now i can make calls from my wifi only nexus 7, and my kids can have my old cell phones for calls when wifi is available.

any of you guys interested in this development?

Glad to see they've released this for Android since it's been possible on iOS for a while now. Will definitely be popular with people who have limited minutes :)

Don - I think so since your Google Voice number would be different from your cell carrier number, you would just not connect/forward one number to the other so they'd be separate.

About time

Just curious, if one does not want to integrate Hangouts with their current carrier service and SMS, can they simply use if for their GV number to call and text with, while still be able to use their stock SMS app with current provider.

yes. just tried it out. at least on my moto x with my republic wireless via sprint service. my google voice number shows up on caller id.

you have kids .. yeah, you should have a reliable cell phone.. for emergencies.

yeah, it works fine.
I have ATT Note3.. and a separate Google Voice number tide to Hangouts.
tested yesterday.. works.

I am so glad they got this working finally.
although, sometimes there is a lag.. when I pick up an incoming call, it may take 5-8 secs before we can hear each other.

also.. why do they have the dialer as a separate app?
I think they should have it all in one app.. like "Tango" and "Viber"

yes. just tried it out. at least on my moto x with my republic wireless via sprint service. my google voice number shows up on caller id.

I just checked it and when I opened the app it never asked me for my GV number but rather to confirm my actual mobile number. I did check in settings and nothing in there either asking for GV number

There's a thread over here, in the Nexus forums that has a link to this Droid Life article. That says there's been a delay in the full roll-out.

Got you, so you're saying even though I sideloaded the new APK version, the features are still not completely loaded to all, got it

Also just curious, if we will still be able to make a calls directly from our stock dialer to a CDN number and use GV to call out like it use too, or will we loose that feature if we merge Hangouts and GV when available. ?

I also agree with Dan, why do they need a separate dialer, and all is not integrated in one app, they always have to do things different :(

This one has me a tad concerned. I don't use wifi calling but I do make a lot of outgoing calls with GV. I use the Voice Choice app, it is set up to only use my real number for certain contacts and to use GV for everything else. I set GV up on my phone to 'use GV' for all calls and that app takes care of using the right number for all outgoing calls.

Now that there is a separate dialer and the old GV app will eventually go away am I going to have to use a separate dialer for GV calls? That would not be handy, I don't think about it, just dial and forget about it. I really hope that doesn't get messed up.

where you see it in settings.. to confirm the number to use...
there is a option to "edit" the number.
there you change it to the GV number.
that worked for me.

hangeout dialer to use the GV VOIP to make calls.
Phone dialer to use the ATT number to make calls.

Tried it just to be nice :)

Phone rang with my regular number as the Caller ID and the call cost $1.96 on Verizon (4 minute call), so the answer is no. You have to use the Google Hangouts dialer to make the call. It's basically Skype, with worse File Sharing but slightly better VoIP (to phones, at least).

Used a Trash Google Account so I just deleted the account and went back to my normal one after the test. I don't like adding Voice to my main Google Account, because it's impossible to remove it after you add it on.

I haven't gotten a voicemail today but it was working, besides being really slow at getting them from the GV app to Hangouts. That has to be fixed, 5 minutes (my average) is just a bit long.

I just played one that I got a few days ago, no problem at all.

See if you can call and leave yourself a voice mail and let me know if you can listen to a new voice mail.

Here is a screenshot so you can see

I have uninstalled, cleared cache, even data, still same issue, wonder if it is an issue with GV

OK, I just called myself from my other GMail and left a message. I could listen to it with no trouble at all. Loaded right up and played.

Odd that yours isn't working.

The only difference I notice is that I'm on wifi but also have an active data connection, you just have wifi on. Don't think that would matter though?

edit: I also have mine set to use my Verizon # to SMS/respond. Again, that shouldn't matter though.

Yep tried it again and vmails still won't play

Now the only thing I am doing different is I'm not using my mobile number and thats bc I use my personal GV # for my voicemails when they call my modile humber, so wonder if that could be the issue.

Also can't get the dialet to work on my Samsung tablet , once I click and open dialet and click got it at open message screen it force closes. So I guess they still have bugs to work out

So you're dialing out with hangouts only and not the hangouts dialer

Yeah, if I'm in Hangouts and want to call I just click the call button then it either uses GV or Verizon (through the dialer & my Voice Choice app). I'm not using the VoIP part of it at all. I mostly use it for texting and voicemail but do make a call every now and again if I'm in there anyway.

I really hope someone can get you fixed up, what a strange issue.

Hmmm, how are you set up on the GV online site/settings? I wonder if it's something there?
