Help Nexus 7 cracked screen, touch functionality not working

Hey everyone.

I have had my nexus 7 (2013) for about a month now and we have been inseparable. Unfortunately the other night the worst happened. The screen cracked . I wasent that upset at the time because I had my screen crack on my iPhone 4 and the phone was still 100% useable. However for whatever reason once the screen cracked on my nexus 7 the touch screen went haywire. I was able to get past the lock screen with the facial detection but after that the device seems like its being touched allover and just opens and closes apps very rapidly making the device unusable.

I know I must replace the screen but upon my research I have found many different sites selling the parts needed and then many more on ebay. Now here it my dilemma. Everything I have found has the price anywhere from $40-$200. (Cant post links as I am a new user on this site).

My question is what exactly do I need? Just the LCD screen or the digitizer too? what is a reasonable price to buy all of this for?

I am quite comfortable replacing whatever needs to be replaced by myself #1 because I have built many computers in the past and have hardware modding experience. #2 because I dont want to pay someone more than I paid for the device to replace it for me.

I just wanted to be sure what the problem and proper solution is to my problem before I go out and start buying things. Hopefully I am not the only one with this problem. Cheers everyone!

You need the lcd+ digitizer since they are fused together, do what I did order from Repairs Universe │ iPhone, iPod, HTC, Motorola Parts & Repair Guides it's $200 but they got it to me in two days and its great..the original screen had a little ghosting but the replacement is flawless...
Yea I was on that site earlier but I saw similar products on ebay for like $60 so I really got confused on what I was actually getting. I was also looking for a solution for no more than $100, any more than that I don't think I can justify for this device only costing $229

Was just searching the web for some insight on this matter and stumbled on this.
http://www.**********.com/item/100-...digitizer-Assembly-Replacement/652472351.html

$63.50 for just the digitizer alone. Isnt all I need the digitizer as the screen itself is displaying everything correctly? I read that the LCD only needs to be replaced if theres dead pixels and the sort, digitizer replacement is for cracks and touch functionality not working. Please tell me I am correct and I just saved myself $150.. 8)

The digitizer and display are basically glued together. It is probably not worth the effort or risk to try to salvage one from the other (unless you have a heat gun and a lot of patience, time, and tools).

You could easily buy a new Nexus for just a little bit more than what the digitizer/display assembly sell for. I would suggest looking on craigslist for a broken (but obviously not broken screen) Nexus 7 and use it to do your repairs.

I did just that with my older Nexus 7.

Your friend with the water damaged N7 might be a good first try. Yeah I broke my 2012 N7 (well my kids did) and I determined it was a loss. Sold it on eBay as is for about 50 bucks, and used that to buy a refurbished one to replace it. Ended up paying about $100 when all was said and done. Cheaper than buying a screen and digitizer and doing the repair myself.

I just did the repair using my friends water nexus and a couple funny things happened. First I tried turning it on and it just flashed a white light a couple times so I assumed it needed to be charged. So I plugged it in and left it there for a minute or 2 and then tried turning it on and the flashing happened every time I held the button. I waited a little longer , then when I pressed the on button the screen flashed for 1 second with the picture of a battery. I was very happy at this point. I waited a few minutes longer for the battery to charge and tried again and now the screen flashed for 1 second with the Google logo as if it was attempting to turn on. This part freaked me out, wondering why the screen flashed..

After leaving it plugged in for a while it started to make the notification noise once or twice, I tried to turn it on again but now nothing was happening. Wasent sure what was happening at this point or where I may have gone wrong to cause this to happen.

So right now I am currently sitting next to my nexus 7 plugged into the wall with the white light repeatedly flashing.

What could I have possibly done wrong?

just attempted to turn on the device and I saw everything from my cracked device and the touch functionality worked just fine its just that the screen had black lines going across it horizontally. almost like a broken crt monitor would go. The coloring is off too. There must be something ever so slightly wrong with the screen somehow because everything else seems to be working on the device.

hello , i have the same problem, cracked screen (not a huge crack) but the touch is not working anymore, can i just change the sensors, no need to change the screen as the crack is on side and not a severe one at all

what do i need and for how much ??

The LCD and digitizer are bonded with adhesive. A break destroys functionality. You can get the LCD+digitizer combo for like 65 bucks on eBay. I did it and it worked fine. Videos on YouTube with instructions help.
