Does your car audio system have USB, use your G1!

So i realized today on my way home from work that my cars Clarion CD deck has a USB connector for hooking up thumb drives to play music off of them. I figured this HAS to work with the G1... and it does!

I was able to hook the G1 charge and play the music off the SD card through the G1 with ease.

Just set the G1 to act as a usb drive, and you can play music and charge your phone via USB while driving.

So keep that in mind if you're going to be getting a new car CD player, get one with USB (pretty common on new CD players) and you'll be glad you did.

yea doesn't that suck. my brand new $48,000 bmw 335i cant do that because there aint no USB holes anywhere, but ofcourse a $50 stereo unit found at your local pepboys does. I would love to connect my android to the car but doing such would probably require ripping out the sound controls which is connected onscreen to the navigation controls which is connected to BMW's patented iDrive system.

Oh and did i mention my alternative? its an ipod connectivity kit (aka wires connected to your glove box) for a mere $250.

I have a the USB option on my 135i, I leave a 32gb flash drive in there... Guess I'm in luck... great to hear we can charge and use our phones for music in the car. Now I just need to get the 16gb card to hold a decent amount of music.

You guys just gave me an idea.

Dension has a system called the Gateway that hooks up with OEM headunits and offers USB and iPod connectivity. If I get one of those, it's all a matter of a holder for the G1 such that I can leave the iPod in the glovebox, and then put the G1 in the holder and connect a USB to mini-USB cable to it discreetly from the Gateway unit in the glovebox. When a call comes in, I can have it run the call over BT to the Gateway's Bluetooth module and take the call using the car speaker system and a mic, or over to my BT headset.

Thanks for the great idea!

Is this a USB port thats connected to your stereo? Or just a "power only" USB port?

you will also have to set your stereo's sorce to the USB device.

You will need to make sure the SD card is set to "use for USB storage"

I just bought a 2009 HOnda Civic EX that supports USB. According to the user manual this only works with iPods. But I tried my G1 anyway. It certainly hooks up and connects nicely using my adapter. I then clicked on the USB button on the radio and hit PLAY On my G1 music player. The sound was coming out of the G1 but nothing thru the car speakers

Did I miss a step here or it simply won't work?

Check this out for those of you that don't want to install or buy cables. It connects to your phone via bluetooth and then connects to your radio via FM and you can take calls through your stereo and play music off the phone. I haven't tried it yet but seams it would meet many needs here except charging so you would need a cable for that.
