It is checked on my setting to do so but it still doesnt. it does charge the phone though. Also when i reboot the computer and connect the phone after rebooting then i can get the screen to show up on the phone but thats the only time, if i disconnect and reconnect later, nothing...help please...

I was about to respond with a how-to on the way to switch from Charge only to Disk Drive or HTC Sync, but when I plugged my phone in to verify the steps, I no longer get the option either.

So now, I need to know the same thing as the OP. I know that it worked just like my Eris the other day because I transferred music from my pc. I can't figure out why it isn't giving me the option to mount the phone now.

Drag down the Task Bar. You'll see an item for USB connection. If you click on that, you'll get an option to select the mode.

Yeah, that is what I was going to say in my original response, but it doesn't say USB Connected in the Notification panel.

Under Settings > Connect to PC, I have Default set to Charge Only and Ask Me checked, but when I plug it in, nothing shows up in the notifications.

Ok, so in my case, it happened to be the USP port I was using. When I plug it into a different one, it pops up asking me which action I want.

Weird.

Are you getting a USB connection sound on your PC? Does the charging LED come on when you plug in? Do you have another USB cord and/or PC you can try?

Some aftermarket USB cables only offer charging capabilities. I have a Rocketfish one that is like that.

I am using the stock usb cable that came with the phone...Yes the computer makes the usb sound and the charging LED does come on but thats it... The option screen on the INC does not come up giving me the choices of what i want to do when connected...

And when you drag down the task bar and click the "charging only" line, there's no popup? Another poster had a bad USB port, but that's about all I can suggest. Sorry.

Was having the same problem but I solved it. I clicked on "Connect to PC" under settings, then on "Default connection type" and and chose "Disk Drive". This didn't work initially. But I noticed a usb icon in the upper left hand corner of the home screen. If you drag DOWN the home screen menu (the one you drag down to clear downloaded apps, close ongoing apps, etc.) and tap "Connection Type", the same options appear (Charge Only, HTC Sync, Disk Drive, Mobile Broadband Connection). It hadn't remembered I chose "Disk Drive" from the other menu, but when I tapped "Disk drive" on this screen, my pc recognized the phone and saw it as a removable disk drive. Was able to work with the phones files/folders from that point.

Hope this works for you.

I have the same problem, and rebooting the phone is what it has taken for me to fix it.

When it's not working properly, the computer still makes the sounds indicating something has been connected/disconnected from the USB port, it's just that the drives don't show up, and the phone doesn't make a prompt.

I need to connect and transfer my files from my backflip to my laptop. When I connect my USB, it charges but does not give me the option to transfer files or charge only. When I check the notification task bar there is nothing helpful there. Also, my computer is not recognizing the removable disk. Plus, there is no Connect to PC option under my Settings.

Rebooting phone and trying a different port hasn't helped either.

:) Ack! Frustrated.

Thanks for any help.

Same thing happened to me.... Nothing I did would make it work...

This morning I swallowed my hesitation and did a factory reset. I only had the phone a little over a week so there wasn't too much to back up. I backed up my contacts to my SD card from within the contacts menu.

Once reset I immediately plugged in the same USB cable and boom the menu appeared for which desired connection type. installed a few apps that I was using before then connected again... still working... hmmm.

Maybe one of the lousy apps I installed and immediately removed may have hosed it up. Right now I have
Android Firmware Version 2.1 -update1

Downloaded Apps
Advanced Task Killer
Astro File Manager
At Bat '10
Bartender
Handcent SMS
Pandora
Task Switcher
The Weather Channel

I'll update if I find the culprit.

Bumping up an old thread, but something that worked for me ... I had my Desire's cradle plugged into a 4-port USB splitter and while it would charge and transfer files, the phone wouldn't give me the options to change the connection type in the notification area. Plugging the cradle directly into the PC solved the problem.

My AI (Android Incredible) is really funny in its connection to PC.

The first time thru it works flawlessly. I saw main HTC onboard storage and SD card storage as additional drives on my Window Explorer. Just browsing thru few folders then not much to do, I decide disconnect to PC via Safely Remove Hardware.

From then on, my AI never show up in PC connection. I tried tiredlessly shutting down PC, shutting down AI, went thru Connection To PC menu, tried HTC Sync, or Disk Drive on connection... everything I could do never work. The funny thing is, sometime, a detection of USB connnection appears in just a second then disappear on PC system tray. Sometime it holds just long enough to show the AutoPlay popup and I don't even have enough time to move my mouse to click on General options to Open folder to view files. It simply disappears as it plays hide and seek with me.

I decide to go on to the internet to find solutions but so far seem we're users that left in the do-it-yourself or else.

That's all frustration I could cheer up to folks using AI here. It's a hopeless situation.
OVN.

Sometimes an old trick can work for a new dog (NOOB)

THANKS, just migrated from Bberry to Droid Bionic!

This post saved me. thinking no way could it be that simple I plugged in my old blackberry cable and I can now see the folders on the sd card!

THANKS AGAIN,
