What should I do with my Eris?? (To make it faster/better)

Hey everyone, first time poster. Been looking around the forums for a while now. And i'm a little confused as to what I should do with my phone.

Over the past spring break my old phone died after work one day. I went into Verizon the next day. Got a new phone... Droid Eris.

I love my phone and all. But I love customization. Now this is probably the most Theme-able device ive ever had without Hacking. But options are limited.

I Got Open Home, and GDE. Used those for a while. and I like those. Sense is meh...

But lately i've been noticing a lot of lag as well. I can barely finish a text without my phone lagging... >.< I would like to speed it up....

But I would also like to keep my warranty intact, I've seen some options. Updating to the Leak 2.1 v3 or Rooting. of these two I would prefer rooting... I like options lol like i said. and 2.1 v3 traps you on 2.1 v3 forever (as of now >.< )

Both of which seem to void warranty...... So my question Is... What should i do with my phone?? Is it worth it to say F*ck the warranty and root? is there something (BESIDES TASK KILLER!!!) that i can install to make the ENTIRE phone run faster?

EDIT: OH!!! and i forgot. One of my big fears in rooting is the set up process after the root. Like will I have to call some Verizon number and re activate my phone like they did when i first got it?? o_O Scared lol

Thanks in advance!

Welcome.

I am running 2.1 v3 and have only seen a slow down when I have too many apps/processes running in the background. I have found it wise to not just install every app out there that looks cool. It is good to consider what it's going to do to the phone. How much space it will take up? How much memory? Will it run in the background? Will it be using resources I want for something else?

I can't speak to the rooting question because I went the route of the 2.1 leaks.

Personally I am not too concerned about the warranty. I got the phone for free anyway. I think insurance on a phone like this is more important than a warranty.

If you like modding, go the root route, not the 2.1 leak route. Rooting voids your warranty, but if you roll back, it's not traceable so you are back to square one if you need to bring it in for something. Root can only be done on 1.5

There is a thread just for Eris Tips and Tricks and how to maximize battery and all that jazz.

I don't have insurance. I'm just careful with my phone. It isn't 100% foolproof, but...I don't wanna pay 6 or 7 bucks a month. At the end of it all, if your phone survives it all, you just spent the money to buy a new phone at a 2 year price. If you do mess up your Eris, you just run on eBay and get a used VZW phone.

no brainer here. you need to root. there are roms out there that can make your Eris run like the new incredible. today actually a new rom called evil Eris 2.0 will roll out for download running overclocked processor at 768. pretty sweet huh. will also include live wallpapers. best if all, rooting keeps you updated with newest operating systems. better believe we will get 2.2 soon and we wont have to wait like non-rooters must...

HTC has forgotten the eris, only eris owners keep these forums up, and even some of the forum moderators are getting sick of hearing about how we are missing the update, to banning comments on the topic. I love my eris, i thought i was buying the top of the line and it surprised me that we did not get the latest os, our os was old by the time we could buy the thing. No we will never see a ota of higher then 2.1, and they did make such a good product that we are going to have to buy htc/google/android again just to keep the best os. I just wish I could have been able to know it was going to be old immediately.

As for rooting and warrenty, my trackball on my phone failed while I was rooted. Before I went to the store, I followed the steps posted in the root section about fully downgrading your phone back to stock. I went through these before going into the store, and now I have a new Eris coming in the mail. There was no hassle, and I plan on rooting the new one within a few days of getting it and testing it out to make sure the hardware works. I say root is the answer. I'm not waiting for the OTA. For one, It may never be rooted, and for another the ROM cooks will surly create something beyond what they have done, or atleast take the OTA and remove all the bloatware.

Well if you actually did some research on the phone, you would have noticed that it wasn't an advanced phone when it was released. You also should have known this when the Eris and Droid were released at the same time, it was clearly obvious that when one of the phones is running 1.5 and the other is running 2.0 the one running 1.5 is gonna be less powerful.

Wow, are you just negative.

First, HTC, Google and Verizon have nothing to do with this forum.

Second, the Eris was never intended to be the top of the line. That big Motorola thing sitting right next to it in the store, you know the one on all the TV commercials, in ever tech blog and being pushed by every sales rep was the top of the line Android phone when the Eris came out.

Third, Never? Really? Do you have some sort of inside knowledge that the rest of us are not privileged to?

Fourth, it is completely negative threads like your post that people have been upset about. They serve absolutely no purpose and do nothing to help anyone. he mods are deleting those mainly because of a request made by the membership here.

Last, +1 on what Tony said.

Well, if you really want to make it faster and better, and you are within your 30 day return period, trade it in for the Incredible. (Flame away) :p

Assuming you don't want to do that because of cost or other factors, the single thing I did that made the most difference for me with my Eris was turning off animations. I'm not even sure what it turned off since the only thing I notice is a faster phone.

I am running the 2.1 version 3 leak. I understand you are hesitant to do that and you should never do anything to your phone that makes you uncomfortable.

@5thElement

I'm asking very nicely this time.

Please, go back to the Incredible forum and quit posting stuff like this on this forum. You may have been unhappy with the Eris, but others are not. In fact many really enjoy it. What you are currently doing is not helpful or informative to the new members here and simply annoying to those of us that have been around for a while. Your negative opinions of this phone are not welcome here, so once again I am asking as nicely as I can, please stop.

So thanks for the support lol

But really, i need some more information on Root. I've read over the info hundreds of times....

But if i do root and wipe data, do i need to call some number to activate my phone like verizon did or what??? Im not really worried about apps and contacts (Thanks google!!)

And Im also worried about which rom to use. What all is in Evil Eris 2.0? and Where can i find it??

I REALLY need to know about that 3rd part i mentioned, about the data wipe. PLEASE

and I am recommending him to return the phone if he is unhappy with the performance. There is nothing he can do to get the performance he desires out of the Eris. Plain and simple. Please dont try to tie someone into a phone they will not be satisfied with.

Please don't try to force someone to buy an expensive phone even if they don't want it.

Dual = Dial.

It's actually a very simple process.

Open dialer, dial "*228" then wait until it asks for options, you want to choose option 1. The phone does the rest, just let it sit until it hangs up on its own. That will re-activate your phone on the network, and you'll be ready to go.

Thass all??? o_O does verizon find out about this or what???
