Google Maps - Exclude Toll Roads?

I love google maps on my moto droid; however, I was wondering if it was possible to exclude toll roads on it so it gives me the route without going through any toll roads?

Also, I've been playing around for a while, but is it possible to save a few favorite destinations (i.e., home, work, etc...) so I don't have to keep typing it in as my destination?

It definitely is possible to save a destination as I have one saved to one of my home pages on my desire, but I can't work out how I did it. I remember that it asked me to give it a name, then it put it on my home page, can't get it to do it now though. This was with google maps by the way, although I am sure I clicked on the directions widget which looks the same as the google maps widget, which I can't find now. Hopefully somebody will know what I mean and help us out.
Avoiding toll roads would also be good for using in Europe if anybody can help.

Try navigating to a contact that has address info input.

Alternatively, you could give Waze a try. (It's free) Waze has far more options for navigation than Google maps. The only problem with Waze is that the iPhone client is more attractive than the Android client, but supposedly their is a big update coming for the Android. (You can download the new beta on the site, I have it, but haven't installed/tested the beta yet)

Well obviously that was just an example so people can see the need for it. And I'm not referring to the normal daily commute; I'm referring to when you go to a new city or a new area you've never visited and now want to know the best route home or to a friend's house, favorite restaurant, etc...

Recently Google maps tried to direct me through an international airport to get to my destination. I didn't think paying the parking was worth the short cut.

Well obviously that was just an example so people can see the need for it. And I'm not referring to the normal daily commute; I'm referring to when you go to a new city or a new area you've never visited and now want to know the best route home or to a friend's house, favorite restaurant, etc...

Nope. As with any other feature not in Google Maps Navigation you'd need to find a GPS nav app that has the feature you're looking for. You can submit a feature request to Google, IIRC, but that doesn't really help here and now.

Access it on the home page create a shortcut>Navigation and Directions input the address. This saves a lot of time cause you don't have to open maps wait for a lock then choose directions then type in the address and then choose navigate. It offers one button navigation to an address.

Also you can search for an address click on the balloon>save as contact then look up the contact and click the star in the upper right (stared in adroid=favorite) it will then show up on the map as a star. To find starred locations in maps menu>more>starred items and it will show you a list select the starred item then navigate to it.

There used to be an option for HOV lanes (car pool) in a previous version of Google Maps but from my experience it didn't work anyway. Even though I had told it to avoid HOV lanes it would still try to direct me onto them. I can't seam to find it anywhere now.

Using GPS for the daily commute still has its benefits. Once you have the destination entered you can get a quick look at traffic on your route (assuming you take the route that Google calculates).

I'm using an HTC desire. I do have the option to navigate once I've input my destination, but it was different a few days ago, I had a widget that looked the same as the google maps one, but said navigate or something similar underneath it. I'm sure it was when I used this that I had the option to save a destination, giving it a name of my choice, and the widget of my choice too. I have one saved this way now, it has a map and a small heart on it.

Does that mean I have to save favorite addresses as a contact? That seems weird; I don't want to clog up my phone book with locations?

You actually can do this (assuming you mean the navigation app in Google Maps). After you've entered a destination, press the menu button then "route info". Then press the "route options" icon (the icon with gears, second from left). Gives you the checkable options to select "avoid highways" and "avoid tolls".

Edit: Also, I noticed you can do this from the Google Maps app itself. After entering a destination and hitting "go", the next screen that shows up (with "show on map" and "navigate"), hit the menu button then "options". That gives you the same choices.

Does using Googal navigation work very similar to dedicated nav apps, such as Tomtom? For example, it will move along on the screen showingi where you are? And if you deviate from the route it plans, does it recalculate, and do so quickly?

Yes, it has an isometric projection, and will follow you and recalculate. So far for me (I don't use navigation often), it has performed exactly like my stand alone Garmin has.
